Has anyone else used prednisone when their dog was in the final stages of Lymphoma?
-
Hi Cornell, we lost our standard poo (11 yrs) to lymphoma last year and chose to treat her with prednisone in her final months so that she enjoyed the time she had left. It did increase her appetite (I gave her 6 small meals per day - including a midnight snack) and she did drink and wee a lot more. She was on a very high dose and did get a pot belly and lost probably one third of her hair. In the last 2 weeks her appetite was very finicky and she would only eat something new and interesting. I am glad we used the prednisone as it made her comfortable Big hug to you and your dog I should add that our girl had food allergies and the pred meant that she could eat anything she wanted which was important to us as she loved her food. In the final week of her life she needed to be hand fed and tempted to eat and the day she refused food (despite the prednisone) was the day we said goodbye.

Yep, a brown snake in hubby's school yesterday - they blocked it off in a cupboard and got the snake catcher - he gave them top marks because they had someone watch it until he arrived and knew exactly where it was . He said people often phone him and then go for a cuppa - meanwhile snake has moved to a differrent part of the house!!!!

Puppy Farm Raid Kingaroy (will Transport To Brisbane/se)
frufru replied to Border Lover's topic in General Dog Discussion
Just check, but as they are the subject of a court case they probably cannot be fostered outside of QLD (that was the case with the Waterford poodles) - couldn't come just over the border to northern NSW even though they were desperate for carers. -
Thanks everyone - she is absolutley fine - chasing the ball 5 mins later - resilient little thing as she was definitely stung!
-
Thanks, I did get the sting out and she seems fine - I will just keep an eye on it and go to ice if needed. Umm, that was the latest opening vet here and it is very hard to get onto someone after hrs. Joys of living in the country and don't even ask me about trying to get a police response or ambulance!!!!!

Hi guys my mini poodle has just been stung on the foot by a bee and the vet just closed - any first aid tips????

Poodle Nationals are held every TWO years and the next one will be 2011 and will be hosted by the Poodle Club of Vic. There is a page on their website giving info as it comes to hand. As others have pointed out - some states hold Poodle Specialties - probably several times per year.
-
As STB123 suggested - and I would use a cotton ball rather than a cotton bud to clean out the gunk that is dislodged. Keep an eye on it as you may need to see the vet if there is an infection.

Obviously I can't see to the bottom of the ear canal but you can see a good part of the ear canal if the opening is large and you pull the ear flap back. All my poodles through the years (standards and minis) have been taught to lie still and have their ears inspected and plucked if required (I did say quiet an cooperative in my previous post). I find a lot of people pluck the ear from the outer part of the canal and then look on in amazement as you pull a great hunk of hair congealed with debri from the dogs ear with hemeostats - often just sitting at the entrance to the ear canal - the dog is ever so pleased that someone has finally decided to have a good look. I have gone away from plucking all the hair from the ear canal on regular basis - this has been discussed in previous threads with some interesting comments.
-
If the ear is blocked with gunk give it a really good pluck using hemeostats (surgical forceps) but be very careful. Your dog needs to be quiet and cooperative. My standard lies on his side and lets me pluck when needed. I have been known to use a small torch to have a really good look. Some dogs have very open ear canals and some very narrow - narrow ones need more plucking IMO. If the ear is not gunky then I would just use a cleaner and give it a good wipe out.
-
A 30 is just about a surgical blade - way too short for an allover clip. This blade is used for poodles in continental to shave the bare bits

Wow, you are an awesome photographer!!!!

However, they are not choking or coughing - this is simply a noise and you are responding to it emotionally, Zug Zug - the dog still thinks it is barking and is having a merry old time. I don't agree with debarking an entire kennel of dogs but if all other avenues have been explored it is not cruel and means there is one less dog barking for the anti dog brigade to complain about. Good luck with your dog J-den

Hi Didles and Beladoza - pop over to the French Bulldog Thread - there is a post there that is linked to your puppies

I have a particularly sensitive little nose and as a dog groomer find that most dogs have a doggy smell - some more than others - the only dog I don't really mind the smell of is the poodle - smells very different to something like a Lab. Malaseb is very harsh - good for problem areas but I would not wash an entire dog in it.
-
I have always worried about leaving a dog on a drip in a clinic that is not staffed overnight - we do not all live in big cities with 24 hr vet care Good luck with your pup

Actually decreased fertility due to inbreeding does occur.

Thanks for the news link - so much better than my memory. Glad that Charlotte found such a good home as did many of the others. At the time this happened I had heard that many would not make it due to fear aggression. I actually clipped two little poodles from this surrender that were went north from Coffs. They were two very timid boys but not mean at all. Huge dred locks and gunky ears but no fleas - they had had some maintenance (face ant top knot had been clipped ) and were not thin. Having so many dogs is just ridiculous and there is no way one person could adequately care for these dogs let alone socialise them. One of these little poodles comes to me for regular grooming and like Charlotte is adored by his owners and is slowly gaining confidence and now enjoys his walk on the lead but still very timid.

If it is the case from Kyogle (as I indicated previously) these dogs were "surrendered" by the owner (obviously with a lot having gone on prior). That is why some dogs were left with her. They were eventually seized as the woman was evicted from the premises and left the remaining dogs behind - she faced court for this. It was in the Northern Star last year - I think the court case was heard in Lismore fom memory . The court case was not about the dogs she surrendered.
-
Was this NSW case the one from Kyogle? If so the dogs were surrendered by the people and the 24 odd were later seized as she abandoned them and was fined for this. The case occurred last year.

Cavalier Sold To Pets Paradise By A Registered Breeder
frufru replied to sugar's topic in In The News
Re comments about the "breeder" all registered breeders are not ethical!!!!! I would have thought there had been enough threads over the years about dogs bought from registeres breeders who were full of hereditary problems for people to realise that. Hang around dog shows long enough and you will find out who they are and sometimes it is a shock. No, I don't believe animals should be sold through pet shops but neither do I believe that all registered breeders are ethical. -
Sorry, can't help - got poodles Just wanted to see what life is like for non poodle owners!!!!

What a charming world we live in when supposed "adults" respond in such a way to a child - as others have said "no thank you" is an acceptable response. What a shame such people attended your dog show, Biker Girl. Congrats on the raffle win, Staffordz.

Maybe we need to wear Tshirts that say "it's NOT all about YOU! Moron"
