  1. Good luck with your girl You could try making a paste from bi-carb-soda and applying this to the area - let it dry and brush out. With male poodles in show coat who pee on their front poms it is just daily washing with shampoo to keep the smell and discolouration to a minimum.
  2. That is a fabulous photo - what a beautiful keepsake of a very special dog you were able to help. She sounds like she has chosed her new family. $300 is the cost of a dog from my local group - as you say it covers those basics.
  3. One of the side effects of Comfortis is vomiting. So maybe restrict them when you have given this and don't combine with other meds. Enjoy your holiday!!!! and Don't worry about the dogs!!!!
  4. Call me weird but I would prefer to leave my dogs in a basic kennel where I know they will be safe rather than have someone coming and going in my home where the dogs could escape through the front door looking for me or bark all day. I know someone who does pet sitting in her own home but again - I would worry that my dog might get into mischief or get into a fraca with one of her dogs so I would rather they are kenneled. I think they cope just fine as long as they are safe and fed. My poodles are spoilt house dogs but I would not hesitate to kennel if necessary.
  5. Thanks so much to the people contributing to this thread - it is one of the most informative I have seen for ages and answers a lot of questions for me.
  6. Parkeyre, Just a qusestion, at age 1 did your pups get the registered triannial vaccine or one that is registered for annual use????
  7. Have you had a stool sample tested for worms? My 16 week old standard poodle puppy has a combination of raw and dried food (Pro-Plan) She was on a mix of Optimum and Royal Canin when I got her and we changed over gradually with no probs. Her raw food consists or chicken wings, lamb ribs or beeg ribs. I only give cooked food to elderly or ill dogs.
  8. Tilly, are you talking about paralysis ticks or other kinds? I have used collars for several years with success and I live in a very high risk paralysis tick area - but I don't let my dogs go bush during summer (ticks and snakes). Daily searching is recommended regardless of the product you use.
  9. That is one very lucky Willy! Hopefully his owner has learnt not to free Willy without a lead in future!!!. :) :D
  10. Pop over to the poodle thread - several poodle exhibitors contribute regualrly to the thread and a couple of them are from Vic and may be able to point you in the direction of a person to help.
  11. LizT, Same with the guy up the road who thought his fluffy was purebred because there is a byb poodle and malt in its history somewhere. My look of abject horror when he asked if my beautifully bred miniature show girl was a "maltipoo" took him by surprise together with my exclamation that I would never own a crossbred dog (yes - I am a dog snob - I want to know what I am getting). In full flight
  12. Thanks for that info - the dog I was refering to has one of the older models. I looked after him for 4 weeks while his owner was in hospital and taught him to walk on a normal collar on a loose lead but he still pulls like a team of bullocks when she walks him  Not a great believer on harnesses for untrained dogs.
  13. I don't gt the sporn harness thing - little dog down the road has one and he actually pulls more with it on - how is it supposed to prevent pulling?
  14. :D It certainly is a cultural thing - that's why I married a German - he has no such inhibitions - he loves his poodles. Interestingly when I was visiting my sister who lives in a town with a high indigenous population - my large black male standard in full show trim was a great hit and the kids wanted to know was he a "fighting dog"
  15. If you are from a generation that thinks "maltipoo" is cute then "labradooble" positively reeks glamour
  16. In reality, what these people want is "the next craze" its about consumerism - because if it wasn't there are plenty of purebred dogs that already meet the criteria of scruffy.
  17. Can they be shown in that bottom trim, Sandra????
  18. Fun loving family pet, intelligent and OMG a poodle coat Oh, and did I mention they are cute as puppies Seriously, I find most peoples objections to poodles are based on a complete lack of knowledge and have a lot to do with a haircut. As a groomer I can easily make a poodle look like a crossbred designer mutt but it is very hard to make a cross bred into a BIS poodle (or even a well groomed pet poodle)
  19. Dog was doing its job! When will these people ever learn
  20. You need to speak to or see your vet about the reaction to the meds ASAP. Ask a different groomer, vet nurse or vet and you will get different replies to the plucking question. As a groomer and owner of poodles I do different things depending on the dog and the state of their ears - If they are full of crap and hairy I pluck - if they are clean and healthy I leave them alone but check often. I have never been told to use a syringe with Surolan with a syringe If your vet swabbed the ear and looked under a microscope they will have given your puppy the treatment they felt was required - some ear infections can be very persistent. If mine have ever had a problem - I always go back to the vet once the treatment is complete and have them check the ears to make sure they are clear.
  21. Actually, I have read several times (don't ask me to quote - can't remember) that the guide dog people discontinued the programme because they were unable to stabilize the coat characteristics they were looking for. If you have a look at the doodle registry the "breed standard" covers just about every type of coat you can think of - and they call this a breed!
