  1. Petal it does sound like sphincter weakness but I would also expect her to have trouble holding on and having accidents at other times if that was the case - but could be wrong. Just one thing - you can spend a lot of money second guessing what is going on here and trying different bibs and bobs. Getting a sound diagnosis and working out what is causing this is the most important thing for your girl at this point. And if ultrasound isn't available locally and you're willing to travel then a trip to Albury or Melbourne would be worthwhile and prevent a lot of hitting and missing. One thing I've learnt about continence is that a multi-disciplinary approach is often best - endocrine - internal medicine/neuro/surgical for example - and the place to get these specialties under one roof are the specialist veterinary centres (I'm sure there would be a number of these in Melbourne) or the Vet School at Werribee. IMO find out whats going on here first, before mucking around with anything else. Hope that helps.
  2. mine dance for carrots lol Yep mine do too Rebanne! But bones and fresh meat win! They eat dry food but there's certainly no excitement about it.
  3. It's good to see isn't it luvdogs Mine go berserk for their bones too and when they're happy so am I - and I must admit, they don't 'dance for dry'.
  4. I forgot to defrost the westies raw mixture today - so gave them a tray of reduced price chewy casserole meat I picked up at the supermarket . They were doing cartwheels as their bowls were put down. Far more excited than usual. It was good to see. And of course they demolished the lot! Point? I think raw which gives them such pleasure is good for them - and I think in all our over-analysis of dog god we forget they need to enjoy their meals as well.
  5. Oops - just noticed you're in Qld - but the advice still stands. Slap BF, get her desexed next week, love her to bits for the rest of her life and consider fostering. Too many homeless staffies going down all over the country sadly - don't need any more.
  6. Excellent post danc.and River Star. Lasareina I think you have your answer. It's about what's best for your girl not your BF. So I'd have her spayed next week. And if you really want to contribute to the dog world, rescue or foster a puppy instead - maybe contact Tracey and Lynn at NSWR and offer to help out with the litters they foster. Now that would be a real contribution.
  7. I suck at this stuff - but friends from Darwin have just moved to Adelaide with a beautiful ridgeback - and he reminds me of him. So ridgie x GSD for me too. Whatever he is, I suggest you stay away from including any of the hysteria breeds at the moment - without any DNA testing its impossible to tell for sure anyway and you (and he) don't need the grief.
  8. Years ago when I was thinking about going down the registered breeder route with Sarah my westie, and lurked here for well over 12 months, the thing that ultimately swayed me was a Westie breeder of over 30 years experience asked me ' The bottom line is are you prepared to lose her'? I wasn't , so I didn't and she was desexed a week later. Best decision I ever made to leave the breeding to those who really know what they are doing. Good luck with Juno and whatever you decide. She sounds lovely!
  9. Katdogs is right Powerlegs - you could make a small fortune!!! Let me know if he ever wants some work in Adelaide!! Hope 'your' continence lasts for years KD!!
  10. Oh goody. My house and deck have been wee free today. They were just being cranky pants boys and girls obviously. Upset their routine and/or equilibrium and we pay for it My kitchen was wee-free tonight as well!!But I suspect my battle of wills with Andy is not over yet!!! Hopefully another week or so and they'll be used to their new work day facilities!!
  11. Good on you - she looks fantastic. You've probably just added a couple of years to her life. My girl westie who is fed a raw diet too was complimented by a specialist vet who hadn't seen her before - he was really complimentary about her weight and said the dogs he saw who were on raw diets were generally leaner and he felt in better shape. It was good to be complimented by someone who sees many different dogs a day.
  12. Glad to see you joining this popular growing club Rosetta! Now who else would care to join us?
  13. A thousand apologies DD But isn't it fun to know you aren't alone in your pain!!?? BTW I was told to never use Napisan (by Sheridan perhaps?) - otherwise they'll wee in the same spot over and over? Or have I got that wrong?
  14. Mr Powerlegs bought a camera from eBay called a Foscam. Then he did some nerdy things that I'm a bit vague on so you might need a techie DOLer to help. He got a static IP address, an app for his iphone and set up everything via the main computer. So somehow..the images (and sound) go from the camera, to the computer and he can log in from anywhere with internet connection anytime because the IP address never changes. You can use the speaker as well to talk to the dogs. I don't recommend that, they don't like disembodied voices. ETA have you done the CCD survey for Mac? Just to rule out cognitive changes. This one is by a drug company but most surveys use the same questions. Hmn... The camera bit sounds a bit tricky. Will go back and look at Boronias video when. I get a moment. Yes did deerhound owners survey at her website sometime ago which suggested Mac certainly had mild canine dementia. I did this one too - thanks for posting - Mac has a couple of symptoms in each category. I don't think he's got a lot worse since his first diagnosis - and getting air to his brain after his laryngeal tie-back is probably helping too.

  16. Thanks LG - great minds think alike. I think there is some demand for a harness fitting service for non-standard dog shapes and sizes (is there such a thing as 'standard'? ). And your ability to customise harnesses for special needs dogs is brilliant. I really like the mesh chest plate sort of harness design but the one I bought went too far up Mac's neck for my comfort. I really liked the Sporn simple control harness - thanks for posting - but apart from a commitment to buy the Ezydog from Karina, I've learnt that I think there are certain breeds, westies are one of them, where I think it's better to have the harness fitted. Very easy to make mistakes! :)
  17. Hey wayrod,, please could you pm me your contact details - your DOL inbox appears to be full! Thanks! :)
  18. Oh no. All fingers and paws crossed for you and Buddy here.
  19. Yep getting Sarah onto IV fluids really quickly was critical. For me the scariest part was how fast she went downhill. Seemed fine at breakfast and then in real trouble an hour later IIRC. The lesson I learnt is not to dilly dally or muck around but but get straight to the vet if there's any hint it could be HGE.
