  1. Thanks B - I'd forgotten about Synflex - good reminder.
  2. Thanks so much everyone. They're great suggestions and much to try. I think I overdid it a bit last night as his poo was a bit soft this afternoon so will leave him for a day or do and give him the correct dose this time!!!
  3. Mac my very elderly westie has developed flakey skin - its happened since we've been house-siting in the Adelaide Hills since late June so no sure if the super cold is connected. The vet checked it last Thursday an it' definitely not flea dirt - it's definitely dark flakey skin. So I've started him on fish oil with his evening meal thinking it will help his arthritis as well (he's also on low dose pain relief) - but I'm unsure of the dose for a 7.5 kg westie? Any dosage advice or other suggestions please? TIA :)
  4. Hmmm... Interesting discussion. The last Westie I was asked to rescue out of Hawkesbury in Sydney became a Westie cross by the time he hit foster care. By the time he was on transport to SA he definitely became a terrier mix - by the time he reached me he was definitely a terrier mix - mainly silky if you ask me. Clever chameleon dog that!!! Seriously, I do Westie rescue here with two others (we share the load) on our own - there isn't any breed club here - but we cooperate with NSW, QLD and VIC. And yes we prefer to stick to purebred westies (it's what we know) - but the occasional mix slips through...
  5. Breath-taking! That cost is amazing Perse as is the photo... Good morning beautiful boy...
  6. Yep couldn't agree more HW - why hasn't this dog received specialist care , or any care for that matter? The dog needs treatment now IMO.
  7. Thanks all - I'm genuinely grateful for everyday I have with him. But he is getting frailer so is needing as much supervision as possible. His earlier aspiration pneumonia episode showed how quickly he can go downhill in a matter of hours - and AP is a killer of old dogs if not caught early - so I breathe much more easily knowing he's being looked after.
  8. Thanks Poochmad. I think he's just the cutest thing too. And yes all his vets are amazing - Richard his surgeon has operated on Mac three times - the first time was a particularly difficult ACL repair, the second a complete left ear ablation and then the tie-back... he's my go to for all vet surgeries - he's done three marvellous jobs on Mac who is so good because of him and the follow-up from his other vets - I'm really lucky to have such a good team and not have to worry if any of my guys need treatment or surgery.
  9. Yep thanks cNr - the time has flown. He really has done well - we've only had one bout of aspiration pneumonia which is great - and since he has been on Zantac I'm hoping it was his last.
  10. Yeah, that was easy  Mason, Bailey and Portia (and another boy's name). Adorable! Julian for the last boy as MUP suggested!! Done!!!!
  11. Bailey is a lovely name! Go for it!! And Portia for the other one!! Gee that was easy!!
  12. No time like the present!! Girl pugs names.... Portia? Ellen? Grace? Katie? Emma? Yep I like real names.
  13. Ah!!! Minor detail QM!! So what are you going to name the girls?? Or can we help there too??!!
  14. Love Matthew!! What a great name MUP!! Reminds me of my cat named Mark!! Come to think of it that would be a great name for a pug too!!
  15. Yep QM it is - it has a fringe and is a tartan type check. They come up 2nd hand quite frequently on Ebay cheaply - usually between $25 and $30 + postage. I usually just search 'Onkaparinga rug', I think. And they are lovely and thick and warm and Australian made - it so nice to not be fighting over the only one here!
  16. And yep thats another possibility. The most important thing at the moment I suspect is to get that temp down.
  17. What Snook said. Only to add if the temp comes down and he still has the tremors you might need to consider focal epilepsy. My westie Andy has very mild focal epilepsy where his head 'bobbles' as you say, but he doesn't lose consciousness and is not incontinent and he is 'awake' when it happens. HE will often seek me out if it happens when I'm home. Its too mild for medication and when it happens I just hold him until it stops (3 - 7 minutes or so) and then he goes to sleep. The best think you can do is keep a diary of dates, times and descriptions of each attack you see so you and the vet can be very sure of any pattern, the frequency and intensity. Andy is more at risk in hot weather I've noticed. If possible video it as well as they invariably stop by the time you get tot the vet. Good luck and let us know how you get on?
  18. Thank s everyone. Last year I bought myself a warm wool 2nd hand Onkaparinga travel blanket for my bed at the house-sit which is very cold in winter. And you guessed it - his Lordship took it over! So I found another one on eBay and thought great present for him - and me!
  19. Just wanted to share that my gorgeous old man Mac, who will be 15 in August, passed his 12 month post unilateral tie-back surgery milestone last Monday. Its was 12 months since the worst day of my life and his. Sunday 23 June 2013 at 11 pm he had literally life-saving surgery to correct his paralysed vocal cords which had blocked his airway and sent him into respiratory crisis and me into a completely dark, crazy spin. He was literally suffocating to death. Luckily his regular surgeon came in on his day off to see another patient at the Anzac Highway Emergency Hospital, saw Mac and his X-rays and swung into action at 11 pm on a Sunday night. Two days later he was home, a new dog. And he's continuing to do really well. He's getting older and frailer as time goes by but he still has great quality of life. Here he is on Monday - with his new wool blanket - bought specially to celebrate his first re-birthday as these milestones for tie-back dogs are known. Thanks to his marvellous team of team of vets and Richard Savory the surgeon I still have my Mac - and not a day goes past that I'm not grateful.
  20. I do believe the 'Masons' have it!!! Actually I think either name would be great - but calling out Mason would be better than JR so Mason wins it for me too. Beautiful beautiful dog!!
  21. She's just gorgeous!!! Personality plus!!! Great save!!!! She reminds me of Yellowgirls Cresties when the westies and I used to go to Her shop. Well done CC. I hope you have many happy years together.
  22. Kangaroo tails, chicken frames, lamb necks, chicken necks, big chicken wings. Chicken necks are their staple breakfast. The westies particularly love the roo and lamb necks which I get from Adelaide Dog - otherwise the rest comes from the supermarket on special.
  23. Perse this is where I bought beaut reasonably priced pjs for Sarah for her first Adelaide winter. Her shivering was keeping me awake.
