    Help

Hello Rosi, You need to read some books on keeping a dog, they are not like humans, a lot of things ate by human cannot be fed to dogs. Dog should eat dog food or a specially prepared and selected human food that is suitable for dogs. (not straight from the dining table though). And some dogs get 'bored' with certain dog food so you have to try a different brand. Also some dogs don't eat because they are picky, if they don't eat the food, remove it after putting down for 15mins. This is to let them learn they must eat what you give, otherwise they won't get another chance. Don't keep changing, stick to one food for at least a week to let them used to it. If you keep changing, they will keep being picky. And a dog won't starve if they missed one or two meals so don't worry when that happens.
  2. I feed a tablespoon Jalna a day, only the flavors which list it's specific amount of cultures. There are a lot of dessert yoghurts out there with sugar which is not a good idea, plus those usually don't state how much cultures is in the tub.
  3. try don't look when he's jumping. Any moment he stops, wait a few seconds, look and praise. Jumps, turn your back. I did the angle turning thing. When pup is on my left, I turned a little to the right such that my back was facing her rather than my side, and continued with dishes. It's funny when I kept turning, left right left right. I only looked when pup Diva was sitting still for a while, otherwise I ignored. Yeah I'm stingy with attention when it comes to attention seeking behaviour. LOL! It has worked for me so far, Diva seldom bothers me now when I do dishes, she either sit or drop next to me or do her own thing. Not sure if that'll work for your pup though~ no harm trying. ETA: By the way, no feeding straight from the sink/bench area, otherwise they'll stick around FOREVER! I'm having this problem now, trying to break it.
  4. I feed mine mandarins quite often because I love them. So it's usually one for me and one for her. After that she'll have a skinny lunch/dinner since her tummy will be full of fruits.
  5. Eagle Pack Large puppy - 101 A Natural Balance High Energy - 91 B edited: calculation error.
  6. wolfgirl if you put yoghurt and vegemite, do you filled up the whole kong? if yes wouldn't that be too much for the pup?
  7. I second the crate. As for the french doors, she WILL scratch the door, it's a matter of time. If you treasure the doors, get some wood boards from bunnings and some velcro, just stick them on temporarily while you train her not to do so for the coming months. That should prevent some heartaches And yeah, labradors come in all shades of yellow.
  8. How old is he? It'll be wise to get him in a dog obedience school, they teach leash walking and recall(call him back) among other things. A dog shouldn't be telling you what he wants all the time (no matter how much he wanted to, hehe). You should be the leader and get him to do what you wants so that he won't get out of hand later. Just a suggestion. BTW regarding the leash biting, put some hot chilli paste on it where he can bite, or get this BITTER APPLE from the vet.
  9. A puppy will usually be whiny the first few days no matter what you do, just don't baby her too much or at all then she will learn independence. If she is not sick, has water and food and is comfortable, just ignore her 100% when she cries, don't even look because that's consider giving attention too. Only when she is totally quiet for at least several minutes, then you can give her small attention. In the first few weeks, you can actually keep repeating this process on purpose to condition her. She cries, you leave/ignore. She stops for minutes, you reward with small attention, then leave room again. The more you do this, the sooner she will understand. Enjoy your new friend! They are so cute.
  10. Hello Dolers, I'm feeding my pup EP large breed but thrown away the current packaging when I first opened it and don't have another spare with me. I need to check the guide on the package on feeding amount, anybody can help? She's between 8.5-9+kg. Many thanks.
  11. Nivia, Hopefully the sand pit thing will work for you, will it be plastic? I am getting a plastic kinda sandpit and fill it with water. My pup just discovered she loves water, maybe that will keep her busy instead of digging. If I have time to get the citronella soon, I'll update here if that works, but that will next week at least.
  12. My old maltese used to wee between 3-5 years of age when he's greeting guests, it's just overexcitement. I didn't attempt to correct it much, just request guests not to pat him when their first enter the door. My dog is now 8yrs old and grew out of it himself, I think it's just a phase for some dogs.
  13. Hello Roody70, I've been following this thread, am so happy things worked out for you, little Jackson sounded like a gentle boy, how's he going this week? Perhaps a piccie too?
  14. all these posts are making me depressed, I've just patched my lawn last year! AND also have a sprinkler system underground! :p
  15. I have this problem currently as well, among other problems . I have a lot of healthy established trees and don't wish to lose them. Anybody have good tips please share? So far I have tried sprinkle pepper+chilli powder on the areas to deter puppy but it's not working, moth balls in packets doesn't work as well and is poisonous I know but everything under supervision. I will be using citronella next.
  16. Repeating this post already on Rescue forum. Thought some new puppy owners might want to grab a bargain. The auction is closing soon. ---------------------- I was browsing and happens to see this on ebay. Hope it will be helpful to fosterers or recuers needing a crate. here's the link. Used crate on Ebay
  17. Kace, I used to have the same problem as you, until puppy school trainer taught me this - handfeeding. If you are feeding kibble, use the kibble, otherwise use treats. Put one kibble in your hand, palm facing upwards, fingers holding the kibble, feed pup. If he bites, scream a LOUD high pitch OUCH and withdraw hand far from him. Have a few seconds break and try again. Keep trying as often as you can until he gently 'licks' off the kibble off your hand, remember to praise him when he do that, this is what you want to encourage - gentleness. And during times when not feeding, everytime he bites, you scream and walk away. Hope this helps you too. ETA: By the way, I don't mean handfeed him the whole bowl of food, just use a few pieces of his food for training purposes. He should really eat on his own.

    X-pen Or Crate?

You can read the thread on crates/pens started by the poster - 'curious'.
  19. Curious, My setting is just like Bikle's except that my play pen is metal and is set up in one part of the kitchen, it doesn't look too ridiculous that way. I also don't move it around much, pup sleeps in kitchen. I tied a few small bricks to the side of the pen to keep it from moving too much. My pup is a big hyper pup so sometimes when she's playing rough, the pen tend to shift a little in position. The playpen is doing ok for me so far, pup doesn't go toilet inside it, only two accidents. Personally I chose a playpen because there's more space for pup to stretch her legs when I'm out of the house or too busy. When I'm around watching, she have free access to the yard and the kitchen. If I can afford it, I'd probably buy a crate too and put inside the playpen, best of both worlds that way. I also don't move the pen nor allow pup to sleep with/near me since day one. Now she is very used to being alone. Playpen have it's limits, it's big enough for pup to move but being too big, pup might go toilet in the pen away from the bed. Hope that helps. edited some typo errors.
