Just a quick update....I found a vaccine and things are underway to send Charlie over to the UK. Thanks all

t-time It was a transport company that told me about the vaccine shortage. So tried, that, and have also enquired with others with no luck.

The blue eye questions are definitely funny....that and..."Is it a glass eye" or "Is that a contact lens" Ummmyeahhhhh coz I'd be bothered doing that every day....I know my dog is good looking and all, but that takes the cake! congrats to all everyone who attended today....I wish I could have been there for that seriously LOOONNNNGGGGGGG day!

Thanks everyone for your replies. I did call the UK (as well as Jersey direct) and they both said the same thing. The rabies vaccination needs to be given. The guy I spoke to in the UK didn't realise that Aus had a shortage of the vaccine, but still there can't be anything done about it. The lovely girl I spoke to at AQIS said they have tried SOOOOO hard to try and get the UK to lift their requirement on the rabies vaccine on dogs coming from Australia, but they just won't. I understand they probably want to protect their borders from this awful disease, but really....there is not a snowballs chance in hell that Charlie will bring it in anyway. I only called one AQIS vet in Perth and they didn't have it....said it will be Feb next year (maybe). I don't want to leave him in quarrantine...he would have to stay in the England and I'd be in Jersey and I just won't leave an OES in quarrantine.....he needs care ya know! The annoying thing is that he has EVERYTHING else.....microchipped, vaccinated against what he needs to be in Aus, has his monthly sentinel so should be protected against worms and fleas. He is a show dog....do you think I could pull that as an excuse and say there is some big show happening! I'll try anything really! Also I had thought about bringing him through Singapore and seeing if there is a vaccine here, but we don't know exactly when we are leaving, and our visas here expire in March. All the unknowns from the move aren't helping the situation either SIGH

Yes you would think that wouldn't you....being that Aus doesn't have rabies...but rules are rules... The Pet Passport is Rabies Vaccine, microchip, worming, blood test, then OK to go through without quarantine. It is just so unfair. All I want is my pooch back

Hi all Apologies if this has been brought up elsewhere....It's been a while since I've been on DOL (Sis I hope you haven't posted a topic regarding this!) I am currently living in Singapore and my beloved pooch is still at home in Perth. We MIGHT (well more like probably) will be moving to Jersey - Channel Islands in the UK and I am trying to get Charl brought over. Apparently there is a shortage of the rabies vaccine required to export to the UK without having to then have the dog in quarantine for 6 months. Does anyone know more about this...does anyone know a way around this (like some sneaky vaccine hiding somewhere I can have!) I called AQIS and they said that it should be available in Aus again early next year......which means waiting for it, then waiting another 6 months before he can be exported. Someone talk to me....even just tell me it's not FAIR!

Another 'on the phone' story.... MY OES lives with my Mum ATM while I'm in Singapore and whenever I call Mum, Charl will frantically start licking Mum's Wei's ear.....just licking and licking and licking till it is sooo slobbery and wet!

QUESTIONS 1. What is my relationship with the breed? (ie breeder, first time owner etc) First time owner (and shower - sort of ) 2. Where and why was the breed first developed? The origin of the Old English Sheepdog remains a question of keen interest to Bobtail fanciers, and is still open to new theories and discoveries. However, there are traces of evidence which place its origin in the early nineteenth century, centered in the Southwestern Counties of England. Some maintain that the Scottish Bearded Collie had a large part in its making; others claim the Russian Owtchar as one of the progenitors of the Old English Sheepdog. Writings of that time refer to a "drovers dog" which was used primarily for driving sheep and cattle to market, and it is speculated that these drover's dogs were exempt from taxes due to their working status. To prove their occupation, their tails were docked...leading to the custom of calling the sheepdog by the nickname "Bob" or "Bobtail". Quoted from National OES Council website 3. How common is it in Australia? At the moment, not that common. Almost becoming a bit of a rare breed! 4. What is the average lifespan? 10 - 14 years 5. What is the general temperament/personality? General temperament is that the OES is happy to lean up against you where ever you are. They are considered clowns. They have a very even temperament and are known to be VERY good with children (and I can vouch personally for that) 6. How much daily exercise is needed for the average adult? A walk a day is suffice for an OES. They enjoy getting out. 7. Is it a breed that a first time dog owner could easily cope with? Yes & No. A fully coated OES is a lot of work. Many people think their coats shed...They do NOT. Hair will come out of them, but it will not be strewn all over the house. Their coat can matt easily as it is double coated and requires daily/weekly grooming. It is possible to clip an OES, but it would still have to be maintained. The inside of their ears need to be plucked and nails clipped (as all dogs do). They are a very family orientated dog, and they would not appreciate being left outside while everyone else is inside. If you want an outdoor dog...do not get an OES. Like most dogs as puppies they can get distructive if bored and need toys to keep them occupied. They just love being with people so you have to REALLY REALLY want a dog! 8. Can solo dogs of this breed easily occupy themselves for long periods? As mentioned above as puppies they can get distructive when bored, but nothing that a kong or snack toy can't fix. My OES is an only dog and he is kept indoors when I'm out and is fine for a few hours on his own. 9. How much grooming is required? A LOT! Even clipped I would give them a quick brush over to avoid matts. Especially in places such as behind the ears, around the netherregions, armpits and down their sides. 10. Is it too boisterous for very small children or for infirm people (unless the dog is well trained)? I would say no, as long as there is no fuss made. If you stay calm, they stay calm. They are big and can get excited. They need to be trained to not do those things such as jumping up etc. They are more happy to sit on your feet and get a pat than jump and slobber all over you. 11. Are there any common hereditary problems a puppy buyer should be aware of? Hip problems is all I know of. 12. When buying a puppy, what are the things you should ask of the breeder? (eg what health tests have been done (if applicable) and what is an acceptable result to those tests so the buyer has an idea of what the result should be) Ask if both the parents have had their hip scores done. Make sure the score is not high (the breed average score escapes me at the moment)! Ask about the parents temperaments too

RE: The heartworm - I also use Sentinal once a month. Easy to do, and prevention is better than cure!

Very good point! I was lax in bathing my little Norwich after she had her first season and wasn't sure why all the dogs were still after her until this was pointed out to me That is a REALLY good point...hadn't thought of that! settrlvr - I like you am cleaning around the area constantly....can't have him lose his belly hair! The blood sticks and it's pretty feral, so have been spraying with water around there. Hope that it helps to heal it more quickly by keeping it clean. He does still lick a lot...but he always has. I would say the humping only happens 20% of the time...they are pretty mellow most of the time, but it's when they are outside playing that it goes a bit nuts....James has started humping back though! It just looks like they are having fun - there is never any real agro!

It isn't usually tolerated at all because my dog is an only dog.....I am only looking after my sis' dog because her bitch is in heat. I can't leave it to my husband because he doesn't 'get' dogs...it's up to me. I am doing the best I can, and it is something I'm not used to. It's almost like weird initiation for play, like Charlie does it to get attention. Tomas... very good points, thanks. I do what you say by feeding first, patting first etc. Exhausting them isn't an option as my sisters dog has HD (another reason I dont want charl 'on' him all the time) and I have a son, so don't have hours on end to spend running my dogs. As it is I have to take them for walks individually as I push the pram. My sisters dog isn't used to walking with a pram, so I can't walk the two dogs together. It isn't like this is going to last forever. My main concern is my dog and his bleeding doodle! Can it heal, will it heal etc. etc. He isn't out of sorts or appears to be in any pain. Puggy Puggy - Charlie wishes James was a girl!!!

I am constantly correcting the behaviour, and am keeping them separated. I understand it's a dominance thing, and I think Charl keeps on doing it coz he's not getting anywhere...because James doesn't tell him to stop. They've had a couple of growl/yelling sessions, but on he gets again! No offence taken by your comments regarding this. I think they are on pretty even grounds as far as their position in the pack is concerned....! My dog is an 'only child' Vet thinks he needs a bit of an outlet! Hi all I am dog sitting my sisters dog at the moment and my dog is constantly humping his cousin (my husband thinks he's gay!!!!) Both dogs are entire! The other day I noticed some blood drips on the floor and though it was in one of their mouths. Then I noticed some blood on my sisters dogs bum, so thought, 'oh no what have you done' only to figure out that it was blood coming from my dogs penis! I took him to the vet straight away. She checked his prostage, and did swabs etc for bacteria, all of which showed up nothing unusual. His willy is bruised though and is cut! He's been using it too much! Anyway, this morning there was loads more blood. Not oozing out or anything, but much more red blood. He was licking it. So my question....can a dog 'damage' himself by humping too much, and is there anyting I can do to stop him using it, like bandaging around his tummy!? I know it seems like a bit of a strange thing to be posting, but you are dog experts after all

Def agree it's about the owners a lot of the time. If OES were in the media and everyone wanted one, it may not be aggression (although could be!) but a whole lot of matted OES going into rescue. Some people just shouldn't own dogs, coz they don't understand what needs to go into them.

There was a dog on the news here last night that only had 2 teeth.....he was 29 years old! Teeth are clearly not a necessity!!!!

They are very annoying....I usually get them out myself so Charlie doesn't make more knots in his coat. I'm sure they wont hurt if he eats them.

He's Fantastic Codygirl...thanks for asking. He was in the Perth Royal today...had a ball! He loved all the attention he got.... I was quite amazed at how many people asked if he could actually see, or where his eyes were!......They are only under the hair!!!

Yeah his eyes have always been the same as OES like some other breeds can have wall eye (or two blue, or two brown, or in Charlies case one of each....wall eye). It looks much different to that of a dog with a cateract. I have never once seen the same vet at the one surgery that I go to....thank goodness....he is not sick very often!

Oh, I am aware that vets wouldn't know all traits of certain breeds, but if I was a clueless owner, and didn't know that it was normal, it would be like the blind leading the blind! The vet could have thought there was something wrong, when really there isn't. If it was a sneaky vet, they could have gipped me into getting his eyes tested! - and some owners may fall for that sort of thing.
