  1. Oh my goodness! I have to read these stories a lot more carefully - I completely missed the part about the pup being from a pet shop! In that case, I agree with all of you - it seems she was more concerned about losing money than the welfare of the pup.
  2. Regardless of the breed, an attack like that would have been terrifying - especially for someone who may not be able to defend themselves. Thank goodness it wasn't more serious.
  3. How sad. That must be so hard for her, especially since he was so well known. He was a beautiful example of his breed.
  4. Oh and Mish13 - just want to say - Skipper is adorable!
  5. It's a bit unfortunate that they made such a serious story a joke...I can't believe how cruel people can be! And, it is very lucky that the vet spotted them - they could easily have been hit by that car!
  6. As with any breed of dog - in the wrong hands, they can be dangerous. I think a lot of people get little dogs like JRTs thinking they are 'easy', when in reality they are a big dog in a little body. All that energy has to go somewhere...
  7. I watched the video and especially liked how they immediately wrapped the poor dog in blankets. So sweet.
  8. I bet you any money the morons couldn't differentiate between someone making a nice comment about their dog and thought instead that he had the wrong intentions, i.e. 'stealing'. Poor man.
  9. Maybe the note signing was under duress? The guy was armed with a .22 and a shotgun after all... Fair enough. (Must have missed that bit.)
  10. Geez, I would! Thank goodness the pup was returned - I wonder why they didn't keep it?
  11. WARSAW (Reuters) - A dog had a lucky escape when a Polish boat rescued him from an ice floe that had carried him more than 100 miles up a river and out onto the icy waters of the Baltic Sea. "My crew saw... a shape moving on the water and we immediately decided to get closer to check if it was a dog or maybe a seal relaxing on the ice," Jan Joachim, senior officer aboard the Baltica, told Reuters Television. "As we got closer to the ice floe we saw that it was a dog struggling not to fall into the water." Ship engineer Adam Buczynski managed to scoop the dog off the floe onto an inflatable dinghy and wrapped him in a blanket. "He didn't even squeal. There was just fear in his big eyes," said Buczynski. The dog was first seen on the ice floe some 100 km (70 miles) inland to the south on the Vistula river but firemen were unable to rescue him. When the Baltica crew found him, he had already drifted some 24 km (18 miles) out to sea. "We were in the right place at the right time," said Joachim, noting that they rescued him shortly before night fall. The crew are now trying to locate the dog's owner. Poland is in the grip of bitterly cold weather, with night temperatures in some areas falling as low as -34 Celsius (-31 Fahrenheit). News Story - Dog Rescued From Sea
  12. Just read this online. What a terrible, horrific and awful thing to have happened! Those poor dogs/pups! What a horrible, horrible man! What sort of owner would sign such a thing? Why didn't he call the police??
  13. Hi. We give these to our dogs - one had separation anxiety (seems to be fine now) and the other is fearful of pretty much everything. They seem to work; I should probably do a full study on it, and see the pattern when the female isn't on it. If it is working, she is still fearful, but is a lot calmer. Does that help?
  14. In my humble opinion... I think if 'breeders' of cross breeds showed that they checked the dogs for temperament, illness, hereditary issues (and didn't breed from those dogs), offered life time support and guidance, would take the pup back at any stage (if the owner couldn't keep it), then I wouldn't have a problem with them. I can see the reason why people of the public look at some of the purebred dogs and think, they are lovely, but they could be better improved, and let's be honest, there are a few breeds out there, that have changed dramatically from what they were originally bred for and have suffered over the years for fashion. I know that some of these breeders are trying to change things, but while we have standards/fashions/etc that don't support the well being and health of the breed, then dogs are going to suffer. I also can see the benefit of purchasing a pure bred dog that has been bred pretty much the same way over many years and you know exactly the shape, temperament, size, faults, etc that can be expected. However, I do think a lot of these cross breeds are pretty bloody stupid and have been brought about purely for profit. I'm talking about designer dogs - they are just silly and frankly, ridiculously expensive! I remember the old days when crossed dogs were the cost of a vaccination and food for a couple of weeks. Now they are often more expensive then the original purebred! My sister-in-law years ago bought a maltese cross poodle - because it doesn't shed. I politely pointed out that many breeds don't shed, in fact why didn't she just get a poodle? In reality, she got sucked in my the fluffy cuteness and didn't do her research, as well as jumping on the fashion bandwagon of having a 'designer dog'.
  15. Yes. Was a waste of $300. Our pup just wanted to chew it!
  16. Both Henschke and Jindi have no recall...but only because I haven't trained them! (Boy I'm slack!) One of the behaviours we're working on is jumping up on people...I have a behaviourist coming to help me with Jindi's shyness/fear of people and will get her to help us with the jumping problem too.
  17. I was going to ask the same thing - i.e. is there a flap in the front to protect from the weather/wind... Once that's on, it would be fabulous! I especially love the porch!

  20. Agree on this and speaking from experience. Our first dog was 8 weeks when we got him and has been properly socialised and gets along great with humans/dogs. Our second dog was 7 months and was not socialised at all and we now are getting a behaviourist in to help with her fear of people. On the plus side, she fitted in amazingly and is quite independent, while also being very cuddly. If the older dog has been housetrained (also can be hard if you have to start from scratch) and has been properly socialised, I'd see both dogs and see which one would fit your life better.
  21. I would go by the body language of your dog. Is his tail up, ears pricked forward, happy' smile? Or is his tail between his legs, ears back, crouching down and generally looking unhappy? Sounds to me they are having a great time and the fact he keeps going back speaks volumes. When we first got our female, she played very rough and our male (a sook and bigger than her!) was unhappy with the play (ears back, tail between his legs, worried look) so I would step in. Now they've learnt how to play together and both play quite rough! When he meets younger pups, I'd recommend keeping him on the lead so he doesn't bowl them over and accidently hurt them. Bigger dogs on leads tend to lie on bellies to play with little dogs. It's a nice, safe way to interact with younger and smaller dogs than yours.
  22. They are some of the cutest puppies I've ever seen. How adorable!
  23. Henschke is always on the lookout for cats when we go walking in the early morning and acts like a complete maniac. One day we had to go to the vet and were shocked when a cat was on the reception desk and he didn't even blink! Not sure whether it was becauase it wasn't moving like they do in the morning (i.e. running) or whether he's learnt to behave like that in the morning and really, doesn't give two hoots about them!?
