K9: bet its in the training method differences... -
K9: yes this is common, & its noit as simple as you have something the dog wants either.... You will have much more respect as you can satisfy the primary drive...

Training Methods And Philosophies
Steve K9Pro replied to lab and poodle's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: My goal as a trainer is to train the dog to its genetic capability.... I dont try & use one method on all dogs, because I like it, I use what works with the dog to get the best results.. Main method isteaching the dog to achieve drive satisfaction... -
Triangle Of Temptation
Steve K9Pro replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: the back tie has its merits in a few ways.. 1. its stops the dog self rewarding. (running & eating the food) 2. It stops you from being the one saying to the dog you cant have the food, the back tie does that & you van say when the dog can have the food... Your saying yes not no... 3. You dont have to use verbal control. this can drop the dog out of drive. 4. The dog makes its own decision to look at you, nothing to do with your voice control.. 5. It adds a positive attachment to the back tie... 6. It takes the concern away from the handler if they think the dog may break... So, I guess its important... -
K9: remove the expectation would also remove the motivation (ie drive). You want that just not the fallout of hopping... I personally use the ball closer to the dogs mouth a lot & passive delivery of the item... Did you see how LL pulls out the ball ever so slowly? Wonder where she learned that? Also, Lablovers dog Stamp is far better temperament...

K9: Its actually the result of the dog not having done enough focus work... K9: not really, Yank I believe used to do that in what we call drive overflow, that fallout chatter you see is the result of a dog with out enough satisfaction. High drive demands high satisfaction.... K9: remember that this dog is washing drive off with the pace that is set, if that handler slows down it will create frustration, ie raise drive. The dog is on the edge of peak, slowing down will make it jump up at the handler K9: look at the jacket, bet the dog thinks there is a prey item in there...

Triangle Of Temptation
Steve K9Pro replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: & we know that is good... K9: in extreme cases, you can either, feed small meal in morning & use triangle in afternoon, to reduce drive or use a blind to put the food behind. -
Triangle Of Temptation
Steve K9Pro replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: you cant call the dog to look at you, the dog thinks its controlling the triangle, & it is. The dog has to look at you after making the decision to... Otherwise the dog is only learning to act up to make you help... Move the food further away... *********************************** K9: yes, but you may be moving to fast for the dogs... K9: yes, of course if you want a 3 minute stay... K9: yes time before distance before distraction... K9: yes but not in drive... K9: yes of course, using the yes word is very good... K9: yes, anything you do to show the dog success after they have given you attention is fine... K9: you slow down your yes, show him that diesnt get hium let off the leash to eat the food but ok does... I would suggest moving food away further from all dogs... -

Alpha Roll Article
Steve K9Pro replied to Staff'n'Toller's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
He's a fairly dominant dog so I guess this is also teaching him that being second to me is not only ok but something really good with a lot of benefits. K9: Its actually is not doing much if anything to add to your leadership status... Dams can be rolled on their back in play as they dont see it as a leaderhip thing, sometimes if pups get a bit rough the Dam will jump up & correct them, this is when t ...Its of no harm, but it wont be doing what you think it is.... -

Alpha Roll Article
Steve K9Pro replied to Staff'n'Toller's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: Rank drive is the dogs desire to elevate its pack position... The Alpha Roll is supposed to trigger rank drive so the dog tries & fails... If you dont trigger the drive, nothing has been gained... -
K9: Canberra isnt a problem, I have been asked recently to do something there, just need some more numbers... I have an ACT list going, anyone from ACT should email me & I will add their name to the list, when we have enough people, its on...

Biting Leash When On Prong?
Steve K9Pro replied to Teebs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: yes, being too reliant on the equipment & putting the dog under too much distraction before its trained to cope with it will cause this... -
Alpha Roll Article
Steve K9Pro replied to Staff'n'Toller's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: The Alpha Roll was supposed to be a pplied to a dog when the dog was exhibiting rank behaviour. The technique was to grab the dog by the loose skin around the dogs neck & throwing the dog on its back. Then you jump on top & hold down the fighting dog & give firm eye contact until the dog looks away.. Or you lose the fight & the dog rips off your face... The Monks of New Skete wrote a book a long time ago, (1960's) documenting this method. They felt it was a copy of what they had seen wild dogs do. With carefull observation one can see it doesnt happen this way... When the Alpha Dog approaches the submissive dog extends one hind leg & the opposing front leg, leaning itself over, then it turns its muzzle around to lick or groom the Alpha. If the Alpha requires more submission, it walks in closer, applying Alpha Pressure & the submissive dog rolls over voluntarily... There is no force... People who roll their dog over arent triggering rank drive so this does not really help with any type of leadership... -
K9: Me too, & I dont even know the topic! I will be settling on something soon...

K9: well as the list bully, thats my clever plan... To have HNC advertise for me... mwahhahahahaha

Alpha Roll Article
Steve K9Pro replied to Staff'n'Toller's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: those here talking about being able to roll their dogs onto their backs are not completeing an Alpha Roll. I didnt read the article but have my own views on the procedure. It is totally wrong to complete an Alpha Roll on your dog. It serves to provide you with nothing thats good... -
Triangle Of Temptation
Steve K9Pro replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: one major way is that it confirms to the dog that the command is an opportunity to earn a reward... One of the most important training rules... K9: make sure your using the verbal marker... K9: Intro a key word for attention, then build it in the triangle, the dog just wont stare at you all the time if you dont use a command & if he has a pre existing dog problem... -
Biting Leash When On Prong?
Steve K9Pro replied to Teebs's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
K9: the dog is trying to run the pack... K9: the herding action yes, but other breeds try to control things, some just use different ways, most common is leash pulling... -
K9: Many many thanks for your kind words, they mean a lot to me... Im glad I have been able to give out some advice that has helped you & your dogs... My reward for offering advice here is hearing how much people get out of their dogs after applying my methods... K9: No doubt about that one, never even met HNC though... K9: nope usually just jumps in trying to tell people the down sides, the thing is though, before I give any method out I try it inside out with many dogs before releasing it.... K9: well not yet anyway.... lol.. K9: Thanks a lot, believe me the main workshop Im setting up has already been discussed, it will be one to top all others.... Thats all Im saying so far... ;) Ah well............ we've all heard the saying "hell hath no fury like a women scorned"..... K9: oh hardly lol.... *********************************************** K9: lol it sure does.... next step will be she wont be interested in chickens any more,as the ball is much more rewarding..... Of course she will still maul kids :p K9: In only two days? isnt it just the coolest!?
