Oh you have French doors. Well, give them a call anyway. They might be able to suggest something else? 1300 78 38 39 (Toll Free). -

Winter Time Accidents Grrrrrr

Jules, we have the same issue with Stella whom we haven't had since a puppy therefore old habits are hard to break. We have had Cooper since a puppy and he is crated at night and can hang on but Stella just can't. I've had it suggested to me that I should take up the water dish after a certain hour (say 7pm or so) so that she wouldn't have any fluids after this time, hence wouldn't need to go to the toilet but she drinks quite a bit normally, plus it can get warm for a dog with central heating on so I think she really needs access to clean fresh water at all times. Currently we do exactly the same as you. We go to bed and leave the sliding door open a little bit so she can get in and out however we are also not really happy with this as in winter it lets heat out and in summer lets the cool air out as well. Whilst we are in our own house, I don't like the idea of doggy doors being cut into the class. Our only solution is to get a pig in mud door www.piginmud.com.au . The one we need to get is $315 so its a pretty expensive option but a good investment as we can take it with us if we move or go to our in laws place and we don't have to cut into the glass. We are saving for it though as we have just spent $80 on one of those barking sensors for the two annoying JRT's next door. Sorry I can't be much more help. Lets just say we are in exactly the same predicament and at the moment this is our only solution. Edited to add.....Stella is so fussy about putting her precious toes on the cold wet grass that she has taken to toileting on the concrete verandah. You can actually see the disdain on her face when she realises the grass is wet and cold. God cavs can be so precious!!! :D -
So sorry... R.I.P little one.

I do the same Us too

Yeah....thanks very freakin much. Innocently clicked play. Two sleeping dogs beside me jump up, thinking it's next doors dogs barking. Run out of the study, en route outside. Knock over the bin with prawn peelings in it. Have just spent 15 mins calming them down. Thanks for that!

How Do You Slow A Fast Eating Dog Down?
cavmad replied to julesluvscavs's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Stella snorts too. Its awful watching her make such a pig of herself! Someone suggested we feed her out of a kong so we try that from time to time but she gets it all slobbery and spends the whole night chasing it around the floor. Someone else suggested hand feeding as well. -

I would be interested in an answer to this as well as Stella inhales every meal as though it is her last. She barks whilst I am preparing her food and spins around and carries on. She must get indigestion. We don't let her eat until we give her the o.k and I swear she drools buckets just waiting those few seconds. Maybe its a cav thing Jules? -
Thank god! We have this exact problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I too would be very interested to hear peoples solutions re this issue. Our dogs go off their heads whenever I go to fill up with fuel as well and whenever I get out of the car just to go around the otherside of the car to get them out. It is getting very very annoying as sometimes they bark from the back right into our ear in the front!!!!

We have started using it too thanks to our fab dog trainer. I just cannot believe the results. Its amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Idea....thanks!

I've been giving them the necks, mashed up and they are realy ejoying them and seem to be taking the time to really chew through the bone. I just know that if I gave Stella a whole neck, she would gulp it in one go. Will stick with the mashed up necks, lamb shanks and beef bones (all uncooked) for now. I feel that I can supervise more closely with the bigger bones and I'll know the size of the chicken necks, having hammered them. When I get a bit more confident I'll might try a frame or the wings. I totally understand what you are all saying about the teeth. We are pretty lucky with the dogs as they will let us give their teeth a scrub with some water and a baby toothbrush a few times a week and hopefully giving them a bone or two every few days will also help to keep their teeth clean and strengthen their jaws.
-
Chr**t...that's enough to scare the hell outta me! Stella absolutely inhales her food as though it's her last meal so we really have to watch her. She is so food obsessed!!! I'm thinking I might be able to cope with the mashed up necks but not the wings.

I'm really confused about the giving of chicken wings and necks. One vet told me that I shouldnt give them as sometimes bird bones can carry parasites and that the dog can choke and the bones can cause blockages. Others have told me to give them. I am not really religiously sticking to the BARF diet but my dog usually have a meal of fresh human grade beef mince, chicken breast, fish and fruit and vegetables every night (alternatively). I also add a small amount of Hills dry food to this as well as a teaspoon of sharks cartledge (one dog has a pin in her leg, the other has had his luxated patella operated on). I give them a capsule of flaxseed oil once a week as well. I have tried everything I can to entice them into having a few teaspoons of natural yoghurt in the morning for breakfast but neither appear keen, prefering instead the dental biscuits. They appear really healthy, great teeth/breath, shiny coats, really regular solid stools etc. Whilst on holidays I was reading a book about dog diets and realised that they probably aren't getting enough calcium. The book suggested chicken bones. Well, o.k...they get beef bones and lamb shanks to munch on (supervised!) but I thought maybe I should try them on the chicken wings and necks as soooooooo many people I speak to use them. I should point out that my OH is dead against using chicken bones. Having come from a family that bred rotties and labs, they were always given those huge dinosaur bones. Problem is, our little guys really can't get their teeth into those. We both hate the idea of having to reef a small chicken bone out of our dogs throat or worse, them having to have an operation to remove a blockage but last night we tried it. I bought some chicken necks (cant bring myelf to do the wings yet) and I hammered the hell out of them and then fed them to the dogs. They seemed to really enjoy them and they were gone in no time. We are just not sure if we should be giving them or not. We feel quite safe with the beef bones and lamb shanks as they are bigger, take longer and are easier for us to supervise, but not so sure about the chicken wings and necks. There are so many conflicting points of view. I would really appreciate some advice.

We had a bit of a sad day today. Sent the 2 cavs off to be groomed this morning having told the lady last week very specifically what I wanted. they came back this afternoon with feet completely shaved within an inch of their lives. My husband went berserk (privately!) and I wasn't happy either but I figure its partly my fault. I told her last week what I wanted and I guess they do so many that its hard to remember. I thought she might have written it down though or they might keep their details on a card or something? My friend said that if a groomer is aware of the breed standard they should stick to it but I was thinking that maybe if a lot of people get their cavs feet shaved then thats why she did it. I seem to remember her saying that she gets a lot of cavs in. I think where I went wrong was last time I just dropped my boy in and gave her very specific details. They offer a pickup and dropoff service which I thought I would try. It wasn't actually her that picked them up so I didnt really get the chance to say what I specifically wanted. So I guess its my fault. Its so hard to look at, its so awful!!! Just want it to grow back really quickly! I'll still go back to this groomer because she does a really great job, really pampers our dog and I'd never dump someone just for one mistake....will just be more specific next time.

I went to our new vet and they recommended the Capstar and Advantix. Seeing as I have only recently purchased a new pack of Frontline, I'll use that (every 2 weeks) and then change over. They would have sold me the permoxin but were pushing the Capstar more and they said it's a bit easier. We have been giving Stella sponge baths on her tummy every few hours to get rid of the flea dirt, being really careful not to aggravate the area. They are both going to get their tummies and bits shaved and clipped on Wednesday. The Capstar seems to be working. I realise it only kills the fleas that are already on them. The scratching has dramatically minimised today.
-
So how do you use this, how often and can you use it after a bath? Where do you spray it, wht happens if the dog tastes it? I am really considering this. My husband just found a flea on Stella and they are both really scratchy.
-
What is Permoxin and where do you get it? Is it a chemical that needs to be diluted? Our new girl is scratching madly to the point where chunks of hair are coming out and now our boy is scratching madly too. I have given them both a bath using Aloveen and have frontlined them but they are really going for it. They have appointments on Wed at the dog groomer where they will get a flea bath but I can't wait till then....they are itchy. Also, I have looked really hard but cannot find any fleas!!!

Fidos Oatmeal And Baking Soda Shampoo
cavmad replied to frufru's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have used the Fidos and recently swapped to Aloveen. I think Aloveen is much much better. It is dearer but it smells great and our dog looks blindingly white after a bath with it. Good stuff. -
Peas & Other Foods Which Might Not Be So Good For My Dog
cavmad replied to Bubitty's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
If anyone knows where I can get one of these in Australia (preferably off the net) I'd be grateful. Otherwise have to buy from the states (expensive!). I've toyed with the idea of getting one of these for ages due to our dogs long ears and dodgy knee. The bloat thingy might be another reason to give it a go. -

Is there really a difference between feeding from a raised bowl as opposed to not? I have been thinking about this for some time. Would appreciate any advice. -
God, that video was awful. We are praying for him. Hope he will be o.k. Lots of hugs from our end. xxxx
