It's Official - Atlas Is An Amazing Protector
cavmad replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
I haven't posted anything yet don't panic! Atlas sometimes gives people a fright unnecessarily too, it's embarrassing But yes I am massively proud of him, he definitely sensed my distress immediately and went to bat for me. He is amazing. A super generous DOLer has offered to make him a collar and lead, not sure if I'm allowed to say who it is but they could not have given me a bigger compliment than saying they would be proud for Atlas to wear their collars <-- happy tears. That is so nice of the super generous DOLer! What a great dog. -
It's Official - Atlas Is An Amazing Protector
cavmad replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Wow, that's an amazing story. Good on Atlas for being so protective!!! I don't think mine would have been. Having said that, a postie came to the door to deliver a parcel on Friday. Unfortunately my dogs are in the bad habit of getting overexcited whenever anyone comes to the door, and they tear up the hallway at breakneck speed to meet whoever it is (we bought a baby safety gate over the weekend so hopefully this will put a stop to it!) Anyway, the guy comes to the door, the actual fly screen on the door is quite dark so you can't see into the house...the dogs go screaming up the hallway and I think they thought the door was actually open because they both jumped on it at full speed, hoping to push it open. It made an awful noise when it didn't open and I swear to god the poor posite almost had a heart attack. He stumbled back about 10 steps and was quite shaken. I picked both dogs up and put them in the nearest room and apologised to him. I opened the door and invited him to look through so he could see what he was actually dealing with. He was fine when he saw what they were but mentioned that he had a bad week with dogs attacking him, which is why he was so jumpy. Poor postie! You must be so proud of Atlas protecting you like that. He must have sensed the tension in your voice when you screamed his name. Brings tears to my eyes! Good boy Atlas! -
Same here. We always take our cavs to our parents place but not really to anyone elses. Its too stressful for me, if they have kids or an unsecure yard or whatever. They are happier at home and so am I. They get out enough on trips to the beach and daily walks etc.

They are so cute. I wonder what was going through his head when he put the sprinklet in the clam pool? Water saving? Fill the pool up even more? Too funny! He looks soooooooo cheeky!

Mars Coat King, Furminator Or Something Else?
cavmad replied to ~Aimee~'s topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have two cavaliers and I use the furminator. Its absolutely brilliant. You wouldnt believe the hair it removes. I also use it on my sofas to pick up stray hair! The dogs don't love the furminator but the tolerate it. -
Hi Kendall, Cavaliers are not supposed to have 'buggy' eyes but I've seen them too and it does take away from the gentle expression. Buying from a good breeder and parents with good eyes should get rid of that worry for you. The lozenge is just luck of the draw Both of mine have the lozenge. I knew about it before I purchased them but as I wanted them for pets, it wasn't something I had to have. We wanted Cooper because we wanted a male and he was one of the few blen males in the litter and he happened to have it. We got Stella from Sydney Dogs home and she was 3 when we got her. The fact that she has it is definately the luck of the draw. People always ask me if they are from the same litter because of the lozenge. Of course I laugh! As if I could plan for them both to have it, even if I wanted it!!!

My cav boy Cooper had the surgery for a luxating patella when he was about 9 months. He is absolutely fine now, total sook whilst recovering but fit as a fiddle now. We haven't looked back.

Still Shedding Heaps After Visit To Groomer :(
cavmad replied to mplsv's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have my cavs groomed fairly regularly and they still massively, even when they get home straight after. It's the breed. I also use a furminator and that takes out heaps of hair but if there is any cav in your dog, you have to accept that it will malt. The only way to cut down on the malting is to have the dog shaved / clipped really really short, which I don't do. -
I love this thread!

New Flball Club On The Central Coast
cavmad replied to choc_bordercollie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi, I am definately interested. Are you able to post any more details? -
My Cooper was $120 and he was fine after. No medication needed. I just kept an eye on him and it was fine. $400 is ridiculous!

I wondered this too so my husband and I took them to a shallow lake where the water eventually got up to our waists. We kept them both on lead and gradually led them out deeper and deeper until they realised 'oh, we have to paddle now'. At first, Cooper looked like he was struggling just trying to keep his head above water and his little heart was pounding a million miles an hour but we have done it so many times now that he has got the jist of it. We mainly do it as they both have dodgy legs so its good exercise. The water at the lake is really flat and still as opposed the the beach so its a good place to experiment. I would suggest maybe doing what we did before you take her somewhere where the water is deeper, even if its just for your own piece of mind (which is pretty much why I did it).

Does he really need three meals a day I wonder?
-
I must say, you have handled this soooo much better than I would have! He is looking much better!

As you know, I have two cavs. Cooper has always been a lean dog and being overweight has never been an issue. Stella on the otherhand can lose and gain weight rapidly. At a vet appointment a few months ago the vet said she was overweight at 10.8kgs. This week she went to the vet and I have got her down to 8.8kgs which the vet was very pleased with. We are aiming for 8kgs. Over the past couple of weeks I have met someone else who has a cavalier. Um, her cav is 19.1kgs.... What advice can I give her and how do I say it without hurting her feelings. I know I was a bit put out when the vet told me Stella was overweight so I don't want to be hurtful.

When my OH was not working away during the week, we used to take both of our dogs to a very informal dog training session once a week. It wasn't really traing as such, just basic obedience, some agility and general stuff like that. Now that my OH is away, we can't really do it. I would really like to though. I am not sure what to do. Do I have to choose one dog over the other? Do you take two dogs? Or just not go at all? My dogs are mostly well behaved. I'd mainly be doing it for something fun to do with them, not to earn titles or compete or anything like that.

A friend of mine has just bought six chooks. Her old cattle dog (who had a vestibular?) earlier on doesnt bother to chase them but when I took Stella and Cooper over, they thought it was a great game. When they had the chook cornered, they would just stand there and look at it. They had no idea what to do next. Needless to say it only happened once. I won't be able to take them over again unless she has them locked up. Chickens and dogs who like to chase them just dont mix unfortnately.

Getting Weight Off Some Chunky Dogs
cavmad replied to Bartok's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My stella can lose and put on weight really fast. The vet told me it is totally about portion size rather than what you feed them. I give her necks and dry food but just a much smaller portion. -
Oh how sad. I am sorry for your loss.
