  1. In the ACT you apply for a permit to keep an entire dog. You regsiter your pup usually before 6 months which is when you need the permit by so two totally seperate forms (at least if you go to a gov. shop front). Two different fees. I have always had to walk the staff through the permit part so I doubt they would question any paper work handed in. This is in the ACT only.
  2. They can technically register her in the ACT without applying for a permit (two forms and the staff often don't know much about it). However if DAS picks up on her being undesexed without a permit they will fine them.
  3. To the people saying 30 minute walk is fine but then list all the extra activities thats what I meant by saying 30 minutes is not enough on its own. 30 min walk + classes + mental stimulation is very much different to just a 30 minute walk.
  4. Yeah GSDs shed ALOT  Some more than others but you can certainly expect floating balls of fluff drifting across the floor each morning. My Lapphund sheds less! Also although sure you can work etc they love their people and want to be with them as often as possible. As far as obedient goes, you get back what you put in. Dont put the effort in and the dog will do what it wants. Again with kids so long as you do the work. I do not think a 30 minute walk on its own and locked in a garage all day would work at all. These are highly intelligent working dogs. They need stimulation. Are you prepared to put in much more work then you have mentioned here?
  5. Manx can have long tails. The gene is dominant but that doesn't guarantee inheritance. Let's say you had two manx cats, each carries the recessive and the dominant (we'll call them T for no tail and t for tail). You can work out the litter this way: T t T t = TT Tt Tt tt So, 25% of your litter could be carrying the t, meaning they'd have normal tails. The remaining 75% carry the dominant so should have shorter tails. I understand how it works :) I was refering more to: A) since they wont show any papers (against policy) and the parents aren't seen how do you know that a litter of tabby kittens all with tails are anything but tabby cats. Not to mention they didn't have the right body proportions for what Id expect. B) They were telling people both parents had no tails. Not a tail and no tail and not a no tail and shorter tail. Just that two no tails produced totally healthy long tail kittens with no defects. Manx as a breed are fascinating but sorry selling unpapered tabby kittens all with long tails is a bit steep.

There were issues with staff. Dont get me wrong it was a great place, very good on the animal side of things but staff werent always treated as well IMO as they should have been. A good staff member is worth their weight in gold. I was told I HAD to quit as I was pregnant. They took my letter which I refused to say I was quitting as I didnt want to leave and made changes to it. Made all sorts of trouble for me.
  7. Not unlike PP selling pure Manx kittens with the "tail gene"
  8. I just saw the ad tonight! How horrible. Going to be tough not to jump down peoples throats that bring it up. "aww look at that cute thing, how perfect" Aaaarrrrrrrrrrrgh *bashes people with nearest object*
  9. I would say yes let the other dog at least see that they are gone. However when I had Lakota put to sleep I brought her home and let Blaez see her. He was very distressed. He tried getting her to play, nipping her and then trying to force her to move. It was horrible. Then he grieved terribly for a few months. He still goes and sits on her grave from time to time. So I guess what I a saying is yes do it, I do think in most cases they seem to just except they are gone BUT don't expect it either.
  10. Not to mention the fact that a vet diagnosing something like HD or ED at a glance of a young puppy is not rare. Many vets claim they can "just tell" IME. So like others have said without proof its going to seem possible. Video or not. Xrays would be needed to disprove I imagine.
  11. Wouldnt a tattoo be sore for a few days after the GA wore off? Though there are worse things. Not a big deal IMO.
  12. Our first family dogs were a Dobe called Ali, a Rough Collie called Peter and a silky called Luke. Ali lived a few doors down and had been attacked and mated by a group of male dogs. She accidently smothered the resulting pups so the owners put her out on a chain on the concrete. Usually no food or water. So she took to escaping and would head straight to the local school. She learnt how to unzip bags and was an expert with opening lunch boxes. My mother learnt of her after my brother and sister came home hungry. She was obviously sent to the pound repeatedly. My mum would bail her out and the owners would demand her back. Eventually mum had had enough and told them when they paid her back the fees from the pound they could have her back. So they told mum she could keep her. She was a brilliant dog. Terrified of strange dogs and you couldnt stop her going home if she saw one out. She would walk to the shops with us off lead and sit drooling at the doors. We always got her her favourite thing, jelly pythons. She would gently take it and not eat it till we got home and mum told her it was hers. Peter and his sister were pound dogs too. His sister was seriously HA so was pts. Peter though was so soft and gentle. He was terrified when mum picked him up. He would not walk on grass. Any surface but grass. Mum eventually got him comfortable with it so long as it was under a human structure. He eventually learned to play although always gentle. He had a wicked sense of humour. Luke was a stray at the shops. I found him eating chewing gum off the path. I showed mum but she said oh no we have enough lately. Luke followed our bike home and entered the backyard like he was home. No one claimed him and he was convinced we were his people so he stayed. He cost a fair bit in vet bills though since he was so starved. We had lots of other but these three started it. Each time we lost one of these guys it broke my mothers heart.
  13. Big fan of Jim at hall vet. He has always been understanding and doesnt seem the type to just push an agenda like some vets.
  14. Your welcome. I loved that book so much as a kid but you need tissues to read it!
  15. I think it was "I will always love you". Beautiful story about losing a dog.
  16. I got my first dog at 5ish. Kia and she was a Puli X. LOVED her! I had come home and asked mum if I could have a puppy. She was busy chatting with friends so said sure thinking one day. I walked back up to the house giving away puppies and told them yep mum said yes. So she was always my dog and I had to do most of the care. When I was 16 I was given Akayla from my dad a Czech Shepherd. Another amazing dog but I had to share care of her in the end as my mum became so attached to her. When I left home she would make it about 24 hrs before asking when Akayla could come back. I still did all the vet app. and clipping ect but she kept my mum safe too. She was the first dog I was financially responsible for. I missed having a dog who lived with me 24/7 so that's when I bought my first dog Lakota. First show dog too :) Miss her terribly. She was 100% mine. Of course she was a GSD which I was not allowed to own at home :) So I guess it depends on what you mean by first dog.
  17. Yes I think common sense and courtesy need a come back. It shouldnt matter where you are. Dont let your dog be a PITA. I have a large breed and even they dont like being rushed. My current GSD boy is still a pup but looks like an adult to some. When dogs rush him it gives him a fright. Which is not something I want. It could push him towards acting aggressively towards other dogs. Ruins it for everyone. IMO if its offlead you need to have effective control regardless of where you are.
  18. Yep I take my dogs AND small kids usually once a week for a walk around the lake and we stop for coffee. Its really nice and I have to say its been nice to find places like this while they grow to train them how to behave. I get some funny looks with my young GSD but he is easily transfixed by bacon and stays dead still till he gets the last piece  Once apon a time you rarely saw dogs at cafes and I much prefer this. Its a lovely friendly feeling. Mind you the cafes I go to would not hesitate to ask someone to leave with their dog so most are very well behaved.
  19. Maybe making it public gave the people who loved him a chance to show respect. Plus having people there and in his udual place would be the most normal and less stressful. Id imagine a live giraffe would be difficult to move around.

  21. Pers yes Im pretty practical. If I cared for an animal Id be more likely to be there. Id want to. Even if it upset me.
  22. It doesnt bother me that it was public. I dont understand why people are squeamish when seeing predators actually eating meat. I would have probably been up front watching too. There are a number of things I dont agree with that zoos do but as others have said they have guide lines to follow. There are white lions in a few Australian zoos. So long as they are breeding to the right animals I dont care what colour the mate is or if they advertise they have them *gasp*.
  23. It happens all the time. Quite disgusting. The people that take them and don't scan cant see what suffering they cause. They want, so they take.
  24. I agree with most of it....but, You can be as friendly as anything, share information and show good will but there are some people who just don't get it. I will always try and be open and friendly when talking dogs to people but I have had plenty of people just laugh. "Its just a dog, who cares"? Id love to see some co operation between some groups though. Rescue-rescue. Rescue-shelter. Rescue-breeder and breeder to pet shop ect. Not just agreeing with each other but working towards what's the best result for the animals.
  25. Took the dogs out this evening for a drive. Opened the boot and Jerry Lee very excited decided he would get in himself (normally I lift him as I don't want him hurting his joints and its quite high up being a 4WD). Well he didn't make it and hit the tall of the car instead. Splat! Yesterday he was truly up to no good. Broke my dishwasher, got in the bin and messed up a painting I was working on (he stares at the animal in the painting and drools/paws at it). Then feeling guilty he went behind the curtain to hide. Problem is the curtain doesn't reach the ground so just his head was covered. I was so angry but I had to laugh. Doofus. Wish I had a photo of his master attempt at hiding.
