Vaccinate,or Not To Vaccinate Yearly.
pikespooches replied to nicestman77's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I am a rescue foster carer and have multitudes of puppies from pounds and other unknown sources. I vaccinate all newcomers but for the older dogs as a natural immunity is probably present anyway. I have vaccinated some pups and there has been an autoimmune reaction particularly Merles. All my personal dogs have had the basic two some have had three puppy vaccinations but nothing more. I have one old girl that is 12 and has had nothing past the puppy vaccinations and she has never fallen ill. I have had parvo on my premises on more than one occasion and she is also exposed to the sheeding of live vaccines etc and still she has never had any issues. I do however take precautions to not spread the disease though and to clean up as well! I am just now changing my foster puppies onto a killed parvac vaccine as they have enough to deal with let alone a live vaccine whilst trying to get over being dumped in a pound, change of diet and new bugs etc out there and wormers as well. I will see how they go, but I am confident they will all be fine. If they are still in care four weeks later they can have a C3 and if not and they have rehomed the new owners can discuss with their vet the best way to protect their dog!! -
She came through me from as a surrender. She was from a local person and is definitely Lab x Kelpie. We get many of this cross and BC x Lab in this area as many people have Labs here including farms as people here traditionly did a lot of duck humting although that seldom happens anymore.

And she has a name now, Suey!

Sorry guys I have been very preoccupied lately. The puppy is still here and is light and lanky. She has improved although somedays if another dog tumbles her she seems to take a while to pick back up. When she was with the others, well where she came from no one would put a dog. there were 15 odd puppies and 5 adult dogs, idiot kids and adults more interested in drugs than the dogs. She doesn't lay down fat, has been wormed on a good diet but she is growing. She feels the cold so she has a hot water bottle when it is cold. She likes to romp around and is not as weak as she was. She can get up the steps and will leap off the botton one now. She seldom yelps only if rolled by a bigger dog as any pup will do.

Is that a hunam or a dog chiro?? We don't have anything out here. I know you are in WA but I am in very rural NSW. She is still improving but has probably plateaued. She is growing as well, all legs!! She also did something weird today that I don't know how to describe but another pup was trying to play with her and she chucked a hissy fit and was like a mad dog. She was barking up in the air, all reaction, and I think fear. Looked like Cujo when he had rabies!!I was wondering if she is missing a few screws or if it was a reaction to something that may have happened to her when very small before coming into care. Also looked like she was blind, at times it seems she has partial vision and others it is like she is fine. Very very strange!!

Yes I can do some more pics but her chance will be short lived as I honestly cannot have further vet work done. I am about 700km from specialists and this makes her treatment unviable. Sad!
-
She is still improving, she is much stronger and she only showd a weakness on the left hind. This though is getting better and she will at times use a normal walking gait. I suspect poor nutrition and a possible injury. She does bump onto things sometimes as she propels herself and has not got the control thing happening. I think she will make it but I do not have specialist vets available out here and she is a little foster. She will need to be a house pet and her paymates wil have to be cats or a small dog lol.

Just an update, This puppy is still getting stronger everyday. She doesn't tilt her head, she has massage a couple fo times a day and once when I was doing this there was this definite loud pop, her neck has been straight ever since. She does have a weakness on her left rear leg but he right one is stronger. I would love to get to a specialist as I think she has had an injury. Sadly out here we have little vet care.

Vet said she has weird hips. I asked HD nad he said well yes. He said they should have knocked her on the head. I asked could she be like a dog with three legs? And he said two. I asked can I keep her a few more weeks to see if she improves? and he agreed. I feel she is stronger she can spin and yes still falls at times but just gets back up and goes. She is a tough little nut. But she is a rescue so unless her improvements are great and she will have a good quality of life I am not sure if it will be right to keep her alive. Anyone know of any vets that can work with this in young pups? Surely found early something can be done?

Have tried a google and just got lots of reading and when I put in legs I got a lot of porn sites LOL I am taking her to the vet tomorrow and I just dread what he is going to say to me. I have a loving home if she will have quality of life. And I too have wondered rickets etc and in a way hope that it is and the good diet that I am trying to give her now will amend a lot of this. She is stronger but still drunk!! She is cheeky though and wants to bite your toes lol The people want to surrender both their bitches. They realise they can't afford to keep them and get them desexed. But they want to keep two male pupies in their place. I can imagine 4 male entire dogs together!! I tried to tell them. I only took this pup cause she was going to be knocked on the head

I have a little rescue puppy here that I am unsure what it has wrong with it. She is five weeks old and smaller than she should be but she came from a malnutritioned mum. Anyway she tilts her head a little to one side and stumbles to the side easily, she was worse but with careful feeding she has improved. Also her back leg on one side is weaker and she will bunny hop. I first thought the hips may have been fused but they seem normal. I also have noticed that now she is trying to move them one at a time. She has become stronger! She is happy and smart and plays and is acutually toilet training super quick. I have a horrible feeling that she may have to be PTS as if it doesn't improve it may be an issue as she grows heavier in her body, but I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with something similar. I am thinking either malnutrition or neurological or possibly a combination.

Ahhh found it Name:Robyn Age (optional):40+ Location: Riverina NSW Rescue Group: Riverina Animals Rscue and PnH Time in Rescue:15 months Who can vouch for:PnH carers, ARF carers ,CC Ruth, ADR Trish, Beth2, My Vet Temora Veterinary Practice, and Local Rangers. Adoptive owners like LilLibby, Nytywnd. Have not met many face to face due to distance Preferred Breed: cuties Experience (if any): Animal lover all my life, the only true friends and family I think I have really had!!! I accidentally fell into rescue when I was handed a litter of day old puppies. I was very concerned for their welfare once they were of rehomable age, I didn't want to give them back to the pound. They were my babies and not everyone, very few would have been good enough for them. I didn't want them to be abuse or exploited.I contacted a few rescues for advice and Pawsnhooves took me and the puppies on. By the time they had rehomed I had experienced happiness and heartache, joy and tears. But the house seemed empty so I became addicted to helping other animals. I have travelled thousands of KM to rehome or transport for other groups. I regularly transport from country pounds to other rescue groups at least part way. Late last year it was suggested by a friend to have my own website to highlight the fact that I rescue and foster in the country as most of my enquiries came from the sities and they didn't realize where I was situated. Thus RAR was born. I joined DOL 12 months ago and have interacted with many on here. I can vouch for just as many. I have rehomed either myself hundreds of dogs as I usually help the younger ones and seldom does a puppy come in alone, more like in a swarm. Equally other groups have also helped just as many from out here as well, Particularly ARF,DHC, PnH. Sorry if I have missed someone! I have also fostered and rehomed a few kittens. I travel a 300km round trip just to visit my rescue vet to have animals checked, treated for ailments, vaccinated and desexed. All before rehoming. I have a relatively good relationship with them and could not rescue without them. I can also rely on my local vet to handle mature dogs. I will not and do not rehome a dog that has aggression issues that I am aware of. I will not bring into my home a dog that would place my family at risk. I have at times had to make hard decisions in regard to this and or health reasons. I am a mum with a husband that is rescued out, three kids three dogs two galahs a pony and a few spiders in the cobwebs that I have collected since I have been in rescue. And a part time cat!!! I can vouch for so many on here from personal experience, and dealings. ARF carers PnH carers, DCH carers, Trisven, Nytwynd, Coolibah Coolies, Beth2, and Alanglen and quite a few others that I am not sure who they belong to. Also SWAY for saving my little friend Trevor from a possible wrong home. Sorry if I forgot anyone!!! I have had a big week

Rollerblading With Your Dog?
pikespooches replied to KitKat's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My kids do it all the time with the fosters here that are old enough. the dogs get to go for a good run, they love it nad so do the kids!!! -
Great news for this little dog. She is not out of the woods but she has a new vet and this vet operated and put in some sort of a band. She should hopefully grow out of this in a couple of months, well this is the plan. The spirit of this little dog is hwat has kept her going!!!
-
thee vets okayed the pup and then antoher has picked up I think they said Mega oesophagus. The nerves did not develop properly. Will cost thousands to investigate, inoperable, and may improve but may not. Puppy is not growing but is still a fighter. Currently she is being fed on dry as wet comes straight out, and then held upright for 5-10 minutes. If after a couple of weeks there is not improvement and depending on the vet she will be PTS.
-
I am deading that!!! What do I do if it is the case??? She is a little rescue
-
It is definitely her and not a bug, I have decided to try small amounts of mince as she can't handle meaty bones and the other stuff is just not enough to really get her going, so far so good. Here is her pic and she is dubbed Midget. If she is ok she already has a wonderful home to go to once old and healthy enough.
-
Thanks I will try that and in a way I sort of have, like I have held her upright after her little licks to help and it does a bit. I have noticed that she seems to handle the dry kibble well. Meyby she has a tiny stomach and doesn't know that more than a tablespoon is more than enough. She is happy and bright and seems healthy in every other way.

Hi there all I have a litter of rescues that have been here for few days now. They have been taken away from mum way too early but mum was refusing them to nurse. They are now about 6 weeks old but the little runt is very tiny and is not doing what I expected. She is bright happy playgul but likes to rest a little more than the others. She wees and poo's normal but when she eats, and all puppies gulp, she heaves it back up. I have tried smaller amounts and taking her away from the food to slow her down. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. She does keep a thick mixture of milk porridge yogurt etc down better. When she vomits it has a very thick mucous clear to whitish. I was thinking reflux or a disorder affecting the mucous membranes or something. I have to travel 150 km to the vet and these are rescue puppies so they really have to wait for the next trip sadly. Do pups get reflux, or a gag relfex happening like this. Or could she have a narrow gullet. In the time I have been in rescue I have never had a case like this one. She is lean but seems healthy aside being small and doing this. She is in no way going backwards.
