Proposed New Victorian Dog Laws Dead Wrong
sumosmum replied to Erny's topic in General Dog Discussion
Very disappointing. I am not giving up. Still lots of questions to be answered. Might have to look at this in a day or two when I feel a bit refreshed. There have been no real answers, and the whole thing looks just as vague as it did from the start. Might be an idea to go here later on so that we can look at any other options or ideas. ;) -

Hi Jed, So sorry for what you have been through, and continue to go through, but glad to see that you are feeling a bit better. Lovely having you back on DOL. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved dogs, may they rest in peace. You are such a brave lady, and I admire your love and loyalty to your fur family so very much. Thinking of you, and hoping like others, that each day is an improvement on the previous day. -

Proposed New Victorian Dog Laws Dead Wrong

LOL .... what, and we'd have to sit there listening to what they say but would be effectively gagged?!!! ..... I don't think I could stand it !!! You would need to gaffa tape me and bind my wrists and ankles!! It will be enough to be viewing them on their online TV via my computer. At least I'll be able to verbilise my frustrations (or tribulations, perhaps ). At least I can have a drink in hand whilst I am watching them. I was informed by Parliament staffer that on Tuesday is when business is normally set (don't think they are the correct words - they have so much jargon it's difficult to keep up with) and that they may have an idea of where on the list of business (or whatever) the Bill is come 4pm Tuesday. oh dear - you'd better reach for the BP pills. we could take our dogs with us Can you please share the " online TV via my computer" link. annieK, this is the link to watch live, Parliament of Vic live broadcast link You need to click on the Accept button to accpet the terms before you can watch it. Just bumping for any Victorian dog owners who may not be aware of what is going on with the proposed Dog Laws. People need to be made aware of this. We are all entitled to have our say on these matters. -
So sorry WP. That is a beautiful tribute to your sweet girl. Thinking of you and your family. I am sorry for your loss. RIP Tina, you are so loved.

Totally agree. And microchips are compulsory here now anyway. Dogs can't be registered now for the first time if they are not microchipped. That has been in force for the last 3 years. They could have at least said chipped or tag. That way, it may have encouraged the people with older dogs that are not chipped to get them done. That would have been a step forward rather than a step backward. -

I'm fairly certain they are referring to an actual card like say a blue card that will have printed on it the information of the microchip no. and Dogs Vic. registration no. Maybe I didn't explain it well enough before biggrin.gif Seemed clear to me! OK, I see perhaps I should have said "AST owners will be supplied with a card", is that better ? Ok, thank you. Still, wouldn't do much good if the dog escapes the property, and the owner has the card. The dog and card would be separated. -

What are pedigree papers for???? Maybe with 2 chips in the dog, that is to ensure that if they miss reading the first one, they can pick up the second one. Or maybe it is a super chip that magically transforms the dogs owner into a responsible owner. Seriously though, Loads of piddling going on here by the sound of things. Is this official, do we know this card and chip deal is a definite? Is it written in the proposed Law? If it is written in there, can someone please show me where, or point me in the right direction? -

And they do, which astounds me even more. Do they not know what likely means? As in the law giving an authorised person the go ahead to make a judgment on a dog if they think it might be likely to bite, attack, chase etc. That is a step towards stereotypes about non-banned breeds finding a place in law as likely dangerous. That does not require an individual dog to actually DO anything. That is correct Mita. Frightening isn't it? And to think all of this power is going to be given to councils. Makes it even worse if you happen to live in a Lost Dogs Home Pound area too. They get so much wrong when they are meant to be working with the current laws. I hate to think what may happen with the scope they will have with these new laws. I urge all dog owners in Victoria, in fact all states to read this link. Bad enough that this looks like Victoria will have this law, but some other states may follow. In the Brief, they have used media reports as reference and events in Queensland regarding BSL. They have tried to close small gaps that may have let innocent dogs escape the discrimination. So other states may be waiting to see what happens here. Don't know for sure, but it could be the case. This is really important for our dogs and owners. Please read it, it isn't that hard and you will see how important and urgent this is. Please write to the MPs and ask questions, give you opinion. The Parliament sits again next Tuesday, 22 June 2010, it is not just going to go away. Without a big effort from everyone who cares about their rights and their pets, this will effect a lot of innocent people and pets with some very sad situations in the future. -
I have one of these baths. It is fantastic, and I wouldn't be without it. I use a hose attachment on the kitchen mixer tap so that I can use warm water. I use it outside, but have also used it in the bathroom. No big mess to clean up. And no sore back. I also take it to my mothers house and wash her dogs too. ETA mixer

Very Promising New Drug Ebc46 Found In Rain Forest In Qld

Dr Jack Ayerbe, the vet on Melbourne's 3aw Radio has been speaking about this. He mentioned it last year as well. Shame he is the vet for that horrible pet shop chain. I hope this will help lots of dogs in the future. So sorry Spottychick and Labsrule for your loses. Very sad to lose any of our loved pets or people to this awful disease. -

I would like to know who gets the money that they would be able to collect from these proposed new fines. Does the council get to keep it all, or does the State Government get a percentage? I know of one area where lots of dogs are walked off lead. I don't know why, but always see people walking the dog off lead, the dog at least one house frontage away from its owner and the owner merrily swinging the empty lead in their hand as they walk. This even happens straight out the front of where the ACO office is located. Now I have never seen or heard of the council fining these people with the fines that are available to them at the moment. So, what will happen if these laws go through? I doubt the council will all of a sudden grow a new work ethic? Or, if the council gets to keep all of the money, will they all of a sudden be motivated to do the job they are being paid for? That in itself is wrong to start with if that happens. They should just do the job that they are meant to do, and a lot of problems wouldn't happen in the first place. -

I think we are able to ask what stance they will be taking. Especially if they are your local member. They represent their local electorate in Parliament, and we can ask questions on matters that concern us. That is the way it is suppose to work. Whether we get an answer, well I suppose that is another matter. They don't have to agree with us, but if they go against enough people in their electorate, that is when they get voted out. And that goes for any party. I don't know if that is the way it always turns out, but in my opinion, that's the way it should be. So yes, I think it is quite right to ask where they stand, and have even known people to make an appointment to go and speak to them or their staff. They should be accessible to the residents of their electorate. -

I received an acknowledgment from Ted Baillieu's office saying that they had received my email and would be looking at it. Thanking me for drawing his attention to the matter. That is it, nothing else. Well, it's a long weekend, plenty of time to send more emails, ask more questions and point out how wrong this all is. Keep the pressure up, don't let them think we have forgotten about it, or that they can just fob us off. I don't intend to give up on this, and will keep writing and questioning this. For the sake of dogs. -

Yep, keep up the pressure. Even a good idea if you can call in or telephone the office of your local member and have a word to them about this proposed law. If they don't get enough feedback and objection, they won't understand how unhappy a lot of people are about this. They can't read minds, we need to let them know how we feel. We need to do this for the sake of all our dogs. Our dogs need us to stand up for them. Ask friends and family if they can also add their voice. This is so important. ETA proposed -

Aunties Dog, Trembling A Lot, Fearful, Some Vomiting
sumosmum replied to sumosmum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep, she seems pretty happy. That is how I do the tablets as well. Same for the cats. I went around tonight and gave the tablet. I put it in a tiny cube of chicken loaf. She didn't even notice. I think she will be fine. My auntie always complains that she is a fussy eater, but I think she puts it over them a bit. When we had her as a baby until she was 10 weeks old, she ate everything that was given to her and a lot of variety. They seem to have a lot of trouble giving her worm tabs, but these tablets are a lot smaller and she only has half at a time, so I think they should be okay. She is only 3yo, but yes, I must admit, when we got her home from the hospital she was very happy and very playful. We are just so relieved that she is so much better because to tell the truth, I really did think she may not make it. The photo below has Daisy as a puppy. She is the darkest coloured one on the right of the photo. -
Aunties Dog, Trembling A Lot, Fearful, Some Vomiting
sumosmum replied to sumosmum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
After Daisy was admitted on Thursday, she was put in intensive care. The blood test was done and we were informed yesterday lunchtime that she definitely has Addisons. She was started on the medication and we were able to collect her today. Firstly when they rang and said she was well enough to go home we were told that we would need to speak with the Vet before she was released. It was a different story when we got there and we did not get to speak to any vet. Anyway, we have two lots of medication to give to her, Prednisolone, half a 5mg tab twice a week and the other medication is to be given every day morning and night with food. My auntie and uncle are a bit worried about how to give her the tablets so I am going to give her the first few doses.....well, I am going to try and give her the first few doses. lol........I haven't had to give her tablets before so don't know how difficult it will be. Seriously though, it should be fine and she has to have it to keep healthy. Today she is very happy and back to her normal self. Running around, playing and back to normal. We are all so happy to have her home. Thanks all for the help and input into the situation.
