So sorry that Jessie is unwell. My old girl Daisy had this, and like you I thought she had a stroke and would need to be PTS. She was 16yo at the time. She was still eating, but had lost her balance and had the head tilt. She recovered quickly though. She was much better within 4 days, and back to normal about 2 weeks later. I had cried for ages thinking she was leaving me. I hope Jessie makes a swift and full recovery. Hang in there, it is awful, but if she is well in most other ways, she should be fine. My old girl had heart failure since she was 10yo, and had her eye previously removed because of Glaucoma but she still managed to recover and live longer. She died at 17yo due heart problems and just old age. Hugs to you and Jessie.

GayleK, so sorry. I lost one of my old girls at that age, and it is very hard. It seems a good long life for a dog, but when it is your girl, it seems just like yesterday that they were pups. I still miss my Daisy girl. The oldies are gorgeous. You have loved and cared for her while she is with you, and I am sure she has had the best life. Hugs to you, Very sorry Gayle, and I hope tomorrow is peaceful for you and your dear girl.

Who Should Pay For A Dog That Dies On A Flight!
sumosmum replied to Tysonrox's topic in General Dog Discussion
So sorry this has happened to your dog. :D When a livestock is uplifted on a flight, the Captain is notified of the dog being on board. The Captain then would use the controls to ensure that the temperature and air flow is suitable. Some mistakes that can be made, are that the Captain was not notified of the dog being onboard, or that he was made aware of it, and did not operate the controls for the hold correctly. Also, other things that can happen are that there could have been a perishable shipment that contained Dry Ice loaded in the same area as the dog. This can cause lack of oxygen. This is why it is so important to always tell an airline if you are shipping anything that contains Dry Ice, no matter how small the amount. Dry ice is used for a lot of things and often people do not think it is important, when in actual fact it is! Other things that may have happened, are that some other freight may have moved in the hold and blocked the airflow in the crate. You really need to get a thorough autopsy report, and try to find out more information from the airline. They should have documents showing whether the correct procedures have been followed. They would have documentation stating what else was loaded on the aircraft in the hold with the dog. Well, what has been declared as being loaded with the dog. I suppose you could request a copy of their report into the incident. Or, have a legal person request this for you. If the airline is at fault, they really should compensate you for the dog. Where was the dog traveling from/to ? -
I wash mine in the booster bath with warm water attached to the kitchen sink mixer tap. They only get bathed when they need it.

Using Human Antihistamines For 6 Month Staffy
sumosmum replied to 2staffys's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Here is a guide to human antihistamines, but I would check with the Vet before giving any. Also, if you use human tablets, check with the Chemist first if you need to half any tablets. Some tablets are slow release and should not have the outer shell ruptured. I mention this because if you use a guide like the one in the link, working out dosage by weight, you often need halves of tablets. Human Antihistamine Dosage Guide for Dogs and Cats -
So sorry. My thoughts are with you and your family. Very sad accident. He isn't suffering now. RIP Dear Hugo.

Just Saw An Accident With A Push Bike And A Kelpie Puppy
sumosmum replied to black magic's topic in General Dog Discussion
Agree MM, Cruel, stupid mother. Poor puppy, I hope it will be okay and be taken to the vet. When children are brought up with this attitude from their parents, I think this is a lot of the reason some adults are cruel and neglectful to animals. They don't have good examples growing up, and the cycle continues. Bad attitudes and cruelty multiplies. -
Prayers and healing vibes sent. I hope little Hugo is okay. Poor little man.

Ok, thank you. I thought you meant there was some Bill regarding the rally.

Shame they didn't speak up earlier and a bit louder. Anyway, they have now. AVA New Dog laws in Victoria New dog laws in Victoria Changes to the Victorian Domestic Animals Act 1994 took effect on 1 September. They attempt to address community concern about dog attacks and include the following changes. * Councils can now seize and impound wandering dogs if they are unidentifiable and believed to be a danger to the public. The dog can be euthanased within 48 hours if unclaimed. * A dog that has previously been declared a Dangerous Dog found wandering can be seized and impounded, and euthanased after 24 hours. * All cats and dogs 3 months of age and above must be registered and wear council identification on public property. * New laws have been introduced that affect declared Menacing, Dangerous and Restricted Breed Dogs. “AVA was not consulted before the legislation was drawn up, but was shown an outline, and asked for comments, before the legislation was presented to Parliament,” said Victorian Division President, Bill Harkin. “We were briefed by the Bureau of Animal Welfare (part of the Department of Primary Industries), and subsequently had meetings with the responsible Minister, Joe Helper, and the Shadow (Opposition) Parliamentary Secretary, Bill Sykes.” “AVA supports many parts of the legislation, but we were particularly vocal against the breed specific regulations. AVA policy is that ‘deed, not breed’ should be the determining factor in the assessment and treatment of dogs. This fact has been well communicated to both the Bureau and the Minister, who are fully conversant with AVA’s position,” said Bill. The AVA’s special interest group for animal behaviour, together with the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, produced an excellent submission on the proposed legislation, which was submitted to the Bureau of Animal Welfare and to the Minister. The key area of disagreement is over the breed specific parts of the legislation, essentially the restrictions on Pit Bull Terriers. The restricted breeds include: American Pit Bull Terrier (or Pit Bull Terrier), Perro de Presa Canario (or Presa Canario), Dogo Argentino, Japanese Tosa, or Fila Brasileiro. Breeds other than Pit Bulls and their crosses are either unrepresented or nearly so in Victoria. The biggest problem is determining whether an animal is actually a Pit Bull or Pit Bull cross, or whether it is a cross involving other breeds. There is no DNA test which can identify an animal as a Pit Bull or cross, so the determination can only be made on physical appearance. This is a grey area that can, and will be, contested in court. There is genuine community concern over dog attacks, which tend to get a great deal of media attention, and the public perception is that Pit Bulls are behind most of them (despite all evidence to the contrary). The push for these legislative amendments has come from the highest level of government, and the Opposition did not oppose the Bill in Parliament. “The best that we can hope for is that future amendments will be made in less electorally sensitive times, and that the legislation can be made to work as effectively as possible. Hopefully the scientific guidance that we can offer will be of assistance in the long term,” concluded Bill Harkin.

Proposed New Victorian Dog Laws Dead Wrong
sumosmum replied to Erny's topic in General Dog Discussion
I just thought I would add this to the old thread, in case anyone is interested. As we know, the Bill was passed and the Amended Act came into force on 1st September 2010. I just thought I would post this from the AVA. Shame they didn't speak up a bit earlier and a bit louder. Anyway, good to see they have done so now. Totally agree. It was a great rally, and I think it did raise awareness of the issue. So sick of people who sit around complaining, and don't make any attempt to do anything. Everyone who organised and took part in the day did a wonderful job. Mackiemad, I also agree with your "happy enough to get into bed" comment. ETA, Maybe they already have an assurance that they will be exempt from any new laws!

New laws on breeding have been mentioned by the Vic Government already. See link.. Vic Gov Proposes New Breeding Laws So, if people in Victoria want to have a say, best to get in there and be heard now. The last new dog laws went through Parliament without the public knowing much about it. If people have ideas and thoughts, now is the time to step up and make their thoughts known. I think this rally is a great thing. No point sitting around whinging about the way the laws go, and doing nothing else. This event will show that people do care. I am so sick of hearing all the complaints about the Law, and when the complainers are asked what they have done about it, if they have written letters, spoken to the local MPs, anything, the answer is "No, haven't done anything". This event gives the opportunity to have a say. To send a message. Well done to the orgs. that are supporting and participating in this event and to all that attend and support it. Well done to the people who do expose these filthy farms and let all see how things go for the life of a dog in a puppy farm. Otherwise, how would anyone know? See all you good people there in a few hours.
