That was in the document that was shown to me, the info sheet that is this Standard. One of the provisions was that a vet state/certify as to what breed of dog it is. The other things were ANKC rego and other variations of that. Wish I could have kept a copy of it but the official thing will be released today anyway...........and by thing, I do mean THING. ETA loads of plain crossbreeds will fit the criteria. And probably some non papered pure breed dogs as well.

The crew have just left, and I have told them about the forum, and the concerns we all have. Have seen the standard which looks like an information sheet. Very much the same information that was on the QLD checklist. I think it all went well, and hopefully it will make sense. Still not clear on what this all means if a registered dog, eg. staffyx, is accused of being part restricted breed. I think we will have to wait to site the actual Bill, and then Act. Monty was a good boy as usual and so were the others. Didn't get to say much about the crossbreed issue of litters not looking identical, that would have been too long. Anyway, fingers crossed and hope it all made some sense to others who see it. Apparently the other side of the argument are going to have their say, so that will be interesting. I have directed the interviewer to this forum,dol, as he asked where he might find other views on the subject. I didn't feel as nervous as I thought I would because I care so much about this issue, and feel with the help of DOL members and others in the know, that I am right in opposing this. Thanks to all here who have educated and enlightened me on the subject of BSL and dogs in general. Together with 51 years of sharing my life with dogs, I hope that at least one person who watches the TV actually thinks about all of this in a sensible way. I did mention the Calgary Model and the fact that BSL is not working and won't work.

Yep, thanks people. I did suggest on the phone that the dogs all together mixing nicely would be good and he was happy with that. When they called back they said they wanted footage of the dogs all together. Hope the little ones behave. The Staffy will be fine. Funny that, he is the best behaved and most reliable of them all. They are all loved and gorgeous, but he is the outstanding one. :D

They seemed reasonable on the phone, and they seemed to understand where we are all coming from. It is ABC 7.30 show. Friday. I will confirm when I know for sure. I wasn't going to post here because I don't like this public speaking business, but am pushing myself to do it. I just want this madness to stop, as we all do. I did all the letter writing stuff over the last lot of dog laws and that was bad enough, but this is so much worse. The letter writing didn't seem to make much difference last time. I even personally spoke to MPs last time, and I do know that a lot of their personal opinions are not reflected in the votes, but these governments seems to bully things through, and don't have any idea of what a mess they are making of things. I really hope that when the next serious attack happens after the end of September, the government will take their share of the blame for not getting it right, or at least for not listening to knowledgeable people and organizations who are opposing this.

We don't have any boarding kennels around here, and unfortunately our pound is Lost Dogs Home. Most of the dogs there get PTS for any reason they can find, and even for no reason from what I have seen, so unfortunately can't go there.My friend does Staffords in Need, but is on the other side of town. I intend giving her details to them. I know the rescues are very upset about all of this. Very worried for the dogs and owners.

Thanks, will do my best for our dogs. I have shocking allergies at the moment, and the dogs are all looking a bit scruffy, but we aren't here for a beauty contest, so will have to go with what we have. We have 1 short hair dog, and 3 long hairs in the little family here. The short hair looks like a pointy faced chi, the mother looks like Cairn terrier/Aussie terrier cross, One looks close to a miniature of the mother and the other one, looks almost Schnauzer crossed with I don't know what. I should have arranged for the other three to be here but this was very short notice and didn't have the time. The other three are all quite unique as well.

I have a media crew coming to my house today, to do a piece on the worry of owners with crossbreed dogs being wrongly identified. I don't know how long I will have to say my piece, but I intend to push the fact that there is no accurate way to judge the make up of a crossbreed dog of unknown parentage, especially visually. I also want to get in that BSL is the wrong way to go anyway. My dog is a StaffordX and he is apparently being filmed, but I also have 4 little dogs here. Mother and 3 offspring (4YO NOW). These are crossbreed rescue mutts, and the 3 offspring all look completely different. All from the same litter. There were 6 of them, all different in looks and temperament. Hoping to use them as an example. The idea was to show that bull breed dogs are good dogs and can mix with other dogs and humans happily, but I hope they will also take on board the example of the crossbreed litter. These little examples aren't bully breed dogs, but the theory behind it is the same no matter what breed. As I said, I don't know how much time we will have, and I am a bit nervous, but hopefully some people who eventually watch the show will see what we are going through with our dogs and the fact that it is very unfair, and does not make sense. If anyone here has any other suggestions, please post here or PM and I will try to get whatever info into the thing that I can. Hope they don't edit it and miss the point. Unfortunately, the breed identification issue shunted off into a "a standard that has been approved by the Minister and published in the Government Gazette." Don't know if this has been published . . . or will only show up after the 'amnesty' period ends. Logically thinking, if it is the case as many seem to think that even if the dog is registered it is still at risk of being taken and killed immediately, they would have to show this so called "standard" prior to the amnesty finishing at the end of September. Then again, nothing logical about this whole thing.

I think it is hard to call until we see the actual Bill/Act. We should know more by this time tomorrow, hopefully. If that is the case they will have to remove the whole section in the current act regarding VCAT. I spoke to my Council today, and the Ranger was under the impression that the dogs to be PTS immediately were the ones assesed restricted breed and crosses, who are not registered with council at all.

If the Vet certificate part is written in, I think that will be the best way to go for the crossbreeds. Gee, I think the Vets are going to make a bit out of all of this. There are lot of crossbreeds and dogs who are not registered purebreeds around.

I thought that the instant death sentence was for dogs that are not registered at allafter 30 September 2011. I may have it wrong, but I thought that if your dog is registered and you have him registered as what you believe the dog to be, and the above scenario takes place, then the other part of the act that has not been changed would kick in and you would then go to VCAT. If they are assuming that all owners have the knowledge to know the breed make up of our own crossbreeds, or have a check list handy to check our own dogs, that would be ridiculous. Also, that would mean we would all have to undergo the same training every Ranger has undergone as far as breed ID.

John Lenders is a nice man, but it is a shame the Labour Party has pledged it support in whatever the Libs do regarding toughening up the dog laws. The Greens guy, Barber seemed like he was on the mark, but unfortunately they don't have the numbers to make any difference. The Greens were the only ones who spoke up last lot of Dog Laws that went through as well. Good on you Leema, for writing and contributing to this with your knowledge on this matter to the Pollies. I think too often, people whinge and complain about things, and don't actually do anything or voice their opinions to the pollies.

The LDH are the self professed experts on identifying the breed, so if they rehomed a dog that was a restricted breed, they themselves have broken the law. It was and still is illegal to rehome a restricted breed dog as far as I know. I am in the same boat, so that will be my argument if anyone challenges me. Edited for spelling

I agree. I am so sick of reading articles with them referring to Dangerous Dogs and meaning Restricted Breeds. That just goes to show how much they know about their own laws. The other strange thing in Victoria is that the enclosure for a Dangerous Dog is actually less stringent than the enclosure for a Restricted Breed. It costs the owner of a Restricted Breed more to build an Enclosure than it does the owner of a proven Dangerous Dog. So, it just goes to show they are "numpty's" In Victoria, a Dangerous Dog, proven to do something Dangerous has a less strict enclosure compared to the dog who is a Restricted Breed and is only locked up because of the way it looks.

RSPCA renames potentially dangerous dog breeds THE RSPCA is adopting out potentially dangerous cross-bred dogs under friendlier names. Animal welfare sources have told of up to 11 dogs up for adoption on the RSPCA website labelled "Staffordshire Terrier Cross" that display strong pit bull characteristics. RSPCA Victoria president Hugh Wirth admitted the issue of classifying mix-breed animals under unrestricted dog types had been of concern to the organisation for a while. Despite employing vets to weed out the dangerous breeds, pit bulls were difficult to identify without DNA testing, Mr Wirth said. The admissions came after an unregistered pit bull cross mauled and killed four-year-old Ayen Chol in St Albans this month. "There is only one type of Staffordshire terrier and that is an English one," Dr Wirth said. "They may look like a pit bull but you can't be sure." Mixed breeds are not currently restricted under Victorian law. Dog owners and breeders are fuelling the problem, often registering dogs with their local council as an unrestricted breed. In the City of Greater Dandenong only three pit bulls are registered, yet there are 70 American Staffordshire terriers within the city. One dog flagged by industry experts as a pit bull cross on the RSPCA adoption website was two-year-old Florence labelled as a Staffordshire Terrier cross that was recommended to a home without young children or other animals. Lost Dogs Home managing director Graeme Smith said the practice was not rife but it needed to be looked at. "We are seeing pit bull terrier types becoming prevalent in shelters so it is tricky, but we recognise what a pit bull terrier is and we are not going to change the name and sell it to somebody."

Bill Sykes from the Nationals (I think), he was very anti BSL in his speech opposing it in the last lot of dog laws that came into effect last year. However, he spoke well against BSL, but would not oppose the Bill which was pro BSL. Being that the Minister is a member of the same party, I don't know if he would speak up this time. Sue Pennicuik from the Greens was the most outspoken, but nobody wanted to listen to her. I think a lot of MPs know that BSL is wrong and doesn't work, but they won't speak up against it. It is all about votes really. I would write to your local MPs and maybe the Minister himself. Apart from that, I can't think of anything else. BSL isn't working. We have had it for years now, and things seem to be just as bad, or worse. Why can't they see this isn't working?

The owner of the dog could face charges under the Domestic Animals Act and fines in excess of $19,000. The government has also foreshadowed measures that could include the owners of dangerous dogs facing 20 years' jail in a similar law that applies to culpable drivers. I wish they would stop saying there was an amnesty on Dangerous Dogs. The amnesty was on Restricted Breed dogs. Seems almost everything I read, they keep referring to the dogs as Dangerous Dogs. There are different enclosures enclosures for Restricted Breeds and Dangerous dogs in our Act. In fact, the Restricted Breed enclosure is more stringent than the Dangerous Dog enclosure which is for a dog that has proven to be Dangerous. Dangerous Dogs, Restricted Breeds and Menacing Dogs are all dealt with seperatley in Victoria's dog law. Sorry, just had to have a whinge about that, its really annoying me.
