  1. My jrt stands similar to that. Not quite so far out. We have had jrts all my life and they have all stood like that to a degree. I haven't got a pic here to show you
  2. I had never thought of it from that angle. Using a food based reward as Haven suggested is a great idea. WIth both my pups i can handle them whilst they eat, they will pause and then continue and i can remove their bones etc without incedent but you have me concerned that they give them to me for the wrong reasons. In saying that, i have never physically punished them, i have removed food and given a timeout for inapoppriate (sp) behaviour.
  3. Yes i am NILIFing. THey are doing heaps better now, it certainly made a difference having a consequence for not listening rather than repeating the command and taking them to their matt. I say it once, and they do it or they are out for 15. They only have to be put out once and they are rewarded when they obey.
  4. Well after reading this i am finishing the science diet and going to either EP or Nutro.
  5. Thankyou all for your help and input. I got the meatloaf on saturday and have fed it to the 2 of them for dinner saturday and both meals on sunday and it was a HIT!!!! I gave it to them raw as i don't like the idea of cooking bones, they inhaled it.!! Licked the bowls clean, something i have been struggling with Barker, he was leaving food. I give them bones, big ones, once a week to chew on which they love. I will add an egg once or twice a week and sardines. SOmeone suggested that they are really good. When i went to the butcher to pick it up, a few other people were buying it too. My only concern is that the butcher is recommending to cook it becasue it has raw rice in it, but it has bones in it so i am not cooking it. It ended up costing $7.50 for 2.5 kg. I got red pet mince and mixed it through so they had some more iron it it. It will end up costing me about $20.00 to feed the 2 pups for a month. I have frozen enough for another 3 week and i have a weeks supply in my fridge. So with the dry it is only costing me about 3.00 a day for them both in total.
  6. ;) :D That is not funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to try it for my cats also. cause they poo far too much as i give them cheap stuff. But hte dogs i am definitely interested in changeing. I should get it in the next few weeks so i can wean them onto it. Is the holistic better than the normal eagle pack?
  7. When changing to eagle pack do i need to mix it with the science diet to get them used to it? Cause with dry, i usually just change it.
  8. I was thinking of apple and canteloupe.
  9. I use science diet small puppy with for my jack russell with raw mince/bones. A 2kg bag lasts me 8 week adn she is getting 2 meals a day. It costs me 22.00 for 2 months plus meat. I am looking at going to eagle pack as i have rave revues and becuase it is such good quality you do feed less therefore lasting longer. I used to feed my malamute supercoat or pal dry food and was feeding her 4-6 cups a day, when i changed her to a better food when she got sick she was having 2-3 cups a day.
  10. We have a fish guy who sells near us on the weekends and is really well priced so i can easily get fish and add it to their food.
  11. I will mix our beef mince in with it and ask if he will put beef livers and hearts in too.
  12. Chicken or beef liver? I am sure he would. I would mix mine with red meat also as i get that weekly as well. Besides liver is there any other vegies that are really good for them?
  13. I also had a problem the first time i gave Mitchi drontal. She didn't go to the loo for 5 days and was straining, so i took her to the vet, adn while we were waiting she went to the loo. Apparently, according to the vet, worming a dog can cause loose bowel movements and upset their sytem for a few days. I have never had this prob with other worming stuff from th esupermarket. The next time i gave it to them both and they were fine.
  14. Hi, i went into my local fresh chicken shop last night to get human meat and some bones for the furkids and i was talking to the butcher about food for them. He said he had spoken to the vet up the road, my vet, anout what foods and vegies were good for dogs and he is going tobe selling a meat loaf type thing with meat/bones/vegies in it raw for about $9.00 for 3.5kg. I am going to try it, not cook it cause of the bones and see how they go. He is putting spinach, carrots and beans in the mix, is there anything else ican suggest for him to add?
  15. I was in shock when teenage years happened over night. I had not thought it would change their behaviour and make them test me. How naive i was!!
  16. I get laughed at. When they have done the correct hting and i let them 'go play', i use a really happy adn loud voice, the amount of times i have been laughed at for it. At training on saturday i actually had the trainer say to the others in the class that i was a good example of praising as my dog knows how happy i am with her/him. So now i don't care, cause the reaction i get from my dogs when i release them is awesome. They are so happy that i am happy, it is a reward in itself.
  17. Ok, night number one!! We had a pretty successful night last night. Both had the same rules, told once, 30 seconds to obey, then time out. Barker went out 3 times, 15min, 30 min and 1hour. Mitch went out once. I have photos of the babies behaving. They even got a bone late last night as a reward. And cuddles throughout the night and they stayed in their basket when i did it. So we are making headway, we are definintely going to continue on this path. Thankyou for all your help and i will keep you updated on their progress.
  18. Mel, i have only been giving Bret the advice i have been given myself by trainers as i was in a similar situation. it nipped it in the bud immediately. THe advice given was until he got to a trainer so they could give more specific advice. I truly believe that letting the pup growl at him, and he has had maiya since she was little, would be encouraging that type of behaviour. I am in no way trained in dog behaviour or obedience, but i successfully overcome aggression similar to this, once in an adult mal and secondly in my 5mo rescue. It also seems that this behaviour is new, she has not always done this. So if she is trying to assert herself with Bret, surely it would be better to 'punish', by removal to let her know it is not okay behaviour? I am not trying to be smart i am genuinely interested in your answers as a trainer.
  19. ADD my ass, it is ISSBTM (i see something better than mum) Thans, some great advice. His bed is in the lounge but he sleeps out in the kennel cause he freaked in the crate. I will be doing all that has been suggested and i definitely will keep you updated. Cause if it doesn't work i will need some drinking buddies.
  20. I feed my kids science diet. I had an issue with heaps of poo too. I have solved this by doing the following: Science diet dry food twice a day Pet mince twice a day To get them to this i put half wet food and half mince for the first week. I have had Mitchi pooing twice a day again for over a week. Barker is now pooing 4 times instead of 8 times. I have had Mithci on science diet since i got her and she always did 2 a day but them a couple of weeks agoi she went haywire with 6 poos a day. I had given her a few chicken necks and i think that had something to do with her issues. Since i have hjad her on mince and dry with a little wet she has had not probs. The only reason i am continuing the wet and have not had her off it is because i have 20 cans left as i got a slab of it
  21. THanks so much!! I was giving him chances but as of tonight i won't. 1 stike an dhe is out and will do the same for Mitchi too. I only let him off lead in the yard and inside otherwose he is on a lead. But if he refuses tocome when i call him then i will be putting him on a lead inside too. I cannot believ how bad he is being over night. Mitchi has always been cheeky but she is getting heaps better. She would never recall in the house, you would call, and then we would go and get her but she is doing it really well now. Thanks for the advice, will let you know how he goes tonight.
  22. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I want my well behaved baby back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And what is worse is Mitchi has just started to listen to us!!!! I wanted to GOOD babies!!!
  23. :p My VERY well behaved, VERY attentive 5mo shepx Barker has decided, he doesn't have to listen to us any more. Since last night he ignores us when we tell him to do something. The only thing he listens to us and does is sit and wait before dinner. Since we got him a month ago, he will be told to go ion his mat, and he would go there and lay down until we said he could do somehtin else. Not any more!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He looks at us, then gets up and walks away. We call him, Barker come, as we do and now he ignores us. Keeps on walking. So we go and get him and say in your mat and put him there, i get him to lay down. I sit on the couch, and he is up and walking through the house. So i go and get him and put him outside for a 10 minute time out. Get him in and we go through the whole process again. He did the same thing last night with my hubby and again this morning with us both. It is really frustrating me, becasue i know he is good as he has been up until last night. We are going to obedience at ADT on the weekends and that is going really well. It is like a switch turned off in his head. What do i do? Or how do i go about getting my previously well behaved pup back? I know you are probably going to say 'he has hit the teenage years', i am NOT ready for them.....
  24. Ok. Growling at her dad is NOT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you sin bin or crate her when she did it? If not, next time make sure you growl at her and put her somoewhere on her own for 10 minutes. No toys, food etc. Just herself. Feed her last. You eat before her and give th eother pup food first too. Or feed them completely seperate. I would also book in to training. What state are you in? She is trying to establish her self as alpha. YOU are alpha and you should be. If she wants a treat she needs to do something for it. NILIF, nothing in life is free. I think there is a thread under training, also check out triangle of temptation adn do that with her too. She needs to know you are the boss - COMPLETELY with no room for her to think that she can beat you. Seriously, i would be booking her into training and starting the TOT and NILIF. NEVER smack her but she needs to be disciplined firmly using your voice. With check chains you need to be shown how to use them properly or you can do damage to the neck and back. It should be a quick pop not a huge drag. If you go to training they can shoe you how to do it properly. I am in Melb and go to ADT who i find brilliant for obedience and behavioural problems. You can always as Steve aka K9 for his help.
  25. Is there something preventative I can do to stave of HD? Or is it something that no matter what is done, they will get it?
