RIP Rhino So glad it was a quick end for you old man! Poor Carer who must be so distressed.

ouch peigirl! is Sofia ok?

Isnt bunny hopping usually a sign of a dog with poor bone structure? My understanding is that a well structured puppy will naturally trot or pace.

Thanks for all the kind words. He was a beautiful boy and very special to me. I feel so guilty that I was inside resting while he was outside dying. I jsut wish I could have held him as he went. Im still stunned that a healthy happy puppy can just drop dead whilst playing. I will always remember the horror of the moment when I found him dead *shudder*. The Breeder has been amazingly supportive, she really has restored my faith in people. She is not blaming me at all. On a side note, the breeder took out 6 weeks free cover with Petplan on the entire litter. As a result I will recieve a payout of the whole $1200 I paid for him. This in no way will make up for the loss of my darling boy, but it means that when I am ready, I can afford to purchase another puppy. So, any breeders who currently do not take out pet insurance on their litters, please reconsider. Even healthy happy puppies can die in an instant.

My beautiful boy Ripley died today in a freak accident. He was just 12 weeks old. He was playing with my foster pup when he crashed into the tap. The impact broke his rib and the rib pierced his heart and killed him instantly. I am devastated. RIP beautiful boy, wait for me at the bridge. I WILL see you again xxx

I attended PPS with my goldie bitch Karma a few years back. Local RSPCA ran it. The actual puppy stuff was ok but the other ppl in the class drove me nuts. One woman was neurotic, very pregnant, and kept trying to tell me her life story. Another had a Ridgey pup and had called her puppy some rediculous 5 syllable rhodesian name and kept raving on about how it was rhodesian and kept calling her pup constantly (all 5 syllables no nicknames here). Another woman seemed afraid to let her little snowflake's feet touched the ground, and when she did and karma rumbled it the woman had a fit. The sanest woman in the class had a little BC x puppy and the damm thing got run over and killed 2 weeks into PPS. Needless to say i have not attended PPS with my current goldie pup.

Most of my dogs play in thier water bowls. I use a clam shell plus i find the galvanised buckets they dont chew and full of water they are pretty heavy so they tend not to play in them much. Also I have the run off from my aircon (evap) going all summer into their yard so they can always get a drink from that too - and they like to lie in the puddle fo water they make. Indoors I go for quantity. the idea being that i have 4 or 5 large heavy water bowls so even if they play in one otr two of them there is alsmot always at least one with water still in it. Plus i put galvanised buckets full of water in the shower on relaly hot days. This way they can splash around to thier hearts content and lie in the mess they make. I also always leave thier crate doors open and water in the bowls attached to the sides of thier crates. They dont play in the crate water bowls. I've never yet come hoem to dind they have NO water, tho often the tiled floor is very wet with dogs laying in the water lol.

My new goldie pup arrives in a few weeks. I plan to keep him in a large puppy pen out on the back verandah while im at work while he is still a baby. Its a big hexagonal thing I bought off ebay. When he is a little bigger (maybe 10 - 12 weeks) he can go into a large dog run (3m x 2.4m) while I am at work, and when hes bigger still, he can go in the dog yard with the other dogs. I dont like leaving pups unsupervised with bigger/older dogs as they can easily be injured. I also dont like leaving them indoors as it slows down thier toilet training if they are allowed to toilet inside during the day. The puppy will be crated indoors at night. I realise not everyone has dog runs/separate dog yards etc, but most ppl could afford a puppy pen - from memory it was about $140. It is 8 panels all rigid about 90cm wide and 90cm high each panel. Also has a door in it. For a goldie pup it would be too small in 3 weeks or so, but for smaller breeds it would be ok for a lot longer. Of course I will be putting lots of different toys and kongg in with him each day to keep him entertained plus a trampoline bed so he can sleep. Would actually be a good whelping pen, as the door starts about one third the way up the panel, high enough to keep young puppies in, but low enough for mum to get out easily.

Just out of curiosity, how many of the rescue puppies would be large breeds? I would have thought that more of them would be small or medium breeds, but that is just guessing. Also, most problems resulting from early desexing could take quite some time to show up and not be apparent in the first year or so? Rescues are all sizes, breeds and ages. The only difference is that often a carer can fit more smalls in than large breeds. But then again many rescues are young puppies which will grow up to be large dogs. Regardless of size ALL rescues are desexed before being rehomed - at least I hope they are!
-
With rescue, ALL puppies are desexed prior to going to thier new homes, and this includes 8 week old puppies. Thus far I have not heard of any ongoing problems as a result of being desexed so young. For a dog of my own though, I would probably not desex until around 12 months in order to give the growth plates a chance to close.
