Muttrus I learned the hard way how important quarantine is, as did many other rescuers on this site. Rescuing dogs is not just about pulling them from the pound, its about doing things the right way, the last thing you want to do as a rescuer is spread disease. Have you ever had first hand experience of parvo? it is the most insidious disease. Luckily as K9Angel doesnt rescue many young puppies her chances of having a parvo outbreak are less, but that doesnt mean you ignore quarantine procedures. My concern was how could K9Angel be carrying out safe quarantine procedures if a dog was just sitting on her back seat. Also it seems she has large number of dogs at home so bringing a dog straight from a pound that has not done its quarantine is a risky move. Now its possible K9Angel has a fully set up quarantine room/run and there's no cause for alarm, but it still concerns me the way in which the dog was transported to her home. What you see as me being 'negative', i see as being ethical and responsible.

were you aware that HP vaccinate all dogs on arrival??? Yeah but that doesnt ensure they are immune, it takes time for the vacc to take effect
-
So you put a dog that came straight from the pound loose in your car????? How are you going to disenfect the car??? Sorry but i think thats a hugely risky practise. How do you know this dog hasnt been exposed to parvo and isn't shedding the disease? Given how many dogs you seem to have I think you are taking a HUGE gamble. Is this how you transport all the dogs you bring home from the pound?

I Want To Get A Dog Too And Would Like Some Advice
indigirl replied to RPMgirl's topic in General Dog Discussion
Wonders about this myth of goldens being docile.. my golden karma is 4 yrs old she still destroys things and is a ball of energy. Not a docile bone in her body sadly. She is wonderfully bred and has been with me since 8 weeks of age. I love her but my god she is high maintenance! I also have a kelpie cross who is much easier to manage than Karma. Dont get me wrong, Karma is a beautiful dog, but she is hard work and always has been. Not all goldens fit the stereotype. Karma is incredibly demanding and noisy if she doesnt get her own way. She still destroys things, this week she ate some wooden coasters I had on the dining table, last week she shredded a cushion that was on the lounge - and let me tell you one cushion can go a loonnngg way. She has been coming inside since I got her, she knows what is expected of her behaviour wise, she jsut chooses to ignore that at times lol. -
I am the only one living here so my dogs dont get a choice who they bond with LOL However I believe dogs do choose their owners. Of my 7 dogs several of them would happily go with anyone who fed them and gave them attention lol, but some of the others are very tightly bonded to me. They have all been raised with equal love, time and attention yet some only have eyes for me. This includes a dog that came to me at 3 yrs of age, so I didnt even raise him. Breeding plays a role, my golden is one who would happily go off with anyone who fed her, yet my neurotic kelpie cross only ever wants me. I own 4 iggies, of the four the 12 month old would go with anyone, the 5 month old and the 4 yr old only want me, and the 3 yr old has a foot in both camps depending on his mood. I know growing up the 'family' dogs were all really my dogs. They slept with me and followed me everywhere.

Ive had giardia at my house a few times. Its nasty and its contagious to PEOPLE plus other pets. My bunny gave it to my dog who passed it on to me eek! Best treatment for dogs is panacur, for ppl flagyl though it makes you really queasy. The bunny was admitted to vet for his trearment. The dose of panacur is 1m per 10kgs bodyweight three consecutive days. Its what most everyone in rescue would use to treat it. Works like a charm! My first experience of giardia was when i was living in Darwina nd working in a child care centre. Oh my god I was soo sick! Since then Ive had a very healthy respect for it. Nasty nasty illness - but a dynmaite way to lose weight fast lol.

The report I saw said the dog had a history of aggression, he had bitten before. So whether it was a bull breed or a pekinese it appears the owner knowingly kept a dog with a history of aggression towards ppl. Hope the poor woman recovers fully.

Can you get a dog enclosure for when he is outside so the kids are safe? Then maybe put a toddler gate on your bedroom for when he is indoors and tell the kids not to go in there? Then crate him overnight so the kids can still access you during the night? If you want more space for him indoors you could use a large C-crate or section off a corner of the room for him etc. Ben will adjust to being confined to certain areas while indoors quicker than you think. Good luck!

badboyz im so sorry! Charm sounds like she was a beautiful soul. These freak accidents are the worst as we never see them coming so its all a huge horrifying shock. So good to know she wasn't in pain though. The "if onlys" wont make it easier, it was a freak accident no one could have forseen. Its jsut the harsh hand life sometimes deals us. So sad to hear you have lost your lovely girl this way. RIP Charm girl

Years ago friends of the family had their cat Oscar stuffed by a taxidermist. Oscar was a hard expressionless lump stuck on a board. He was not nice to pat, there was nothing cuddly or sweet about him. He was left out of sight on top of the wardrobe for yrs and eventually thrown out. I would think very carefully about what you want from your stuffed pet. If you are ok with something that is hard as a rock and lifeless then maybe its a reasonable option. I either bury my dogs or have them cremated. The most recent dog I lost was buried in the backyard of a house Ive now sold. Bit sad to leave him behind but hes long gone from this earth anyway. Dog before him I had cremated, now I have an urn full of ashes that I dont know what to do with. I dont want to treat the urn like the holy grail, but likewise I need somewhere special to spread his ashes. My first choice is always to bury them, its just not an option where Im living now. I hope you are happy with whatever option you choose. I would phone the AWL in Adelaide, Im sure they would know a good taxidermist.

Need To Learn How To Show Groom A Golden Retriever
indigirl replied to goldenluv's topic in General Dog Discussion
The best tip i can give you is to buy the right grooming tools for the job. I had no idea how to groom my golden Karma when we first ventured into the showring. I made friends with other golden ppl and got a lot of help and advice re:grooming from them. Good luck My essentials for grooming my golden are: mars coat king #12 mars coat king #20 mars stripping knife (for the ears) decent pair of thinning shears decent pair of scissors small ball end scissors (for the feet) mason pearson boar bristle hairbrush teflon coated comb nail clippers grooming table ear wipes I use plush puppy products to wash/enhance/prepare the coat for the ring -
Wow thats a huge vet bill! If it were me I think I would go with a doggy hamper or gift voucher to a doggy supply place, and a nice bottle of wine for the them. Fact is their dog injured itself and thats part of dog ownership.

No, the two you've met have been dumb. You cannot extrapolate from two dogs that every dog from this place is dumb. They might well be but two is hardly a good sample. As to assuming, you're hardly in a position to get snippy at someone else. What is your problem exactly? I think I can safely say that the oodles from this place are not overly intelligent. How many oodles from this place do you know personally?? Why am I 'not in a position to get snippy at someone else'?? You assumed from my post I was 'running down crossbreeds', which if you knew me at all you would know is rediculous. I own a crossbreed, I always have. I have also rescued and fostered god knows how many crossbreeds, all beautiful dogs. You are the one who took offence to my comments about these oodles being dumb .. fact is they ARE dumb. I didnt say ALL oodles were dumb I said the two i know from THIS puppy farm are dumb. They are also not terribly attractive, particularly the male. I think you should sit back and have a look at your previous post to me. You were very 'snippy', you accused me of running down crossbreeds and inferred that I suggested all crossbreeds are unattractive?? Where did I say that? I said my brothers 2 oodles are not terribly attractive. It seems to me that you are overly sensitive about any negative comments about oodles. This forum is not the place to come and extol the virtues of oodles produced en masse by puppy farmers. Since you missed the point I will repeat it. You don't know that every oodle from this place is dumb. You only know of two. Given there is likely to be hundreds or thousands of them. You know two. I have met nary a one from this place and would not even consider getting an oodle since I am a purebred dog snob but I am not going to assume that every single one is dumb or take your word for it. A sample of two is meaningless. And yes, despite you owning crossbreeds, your post read like you were running them down. To make it simpler, stop making generalisations. Perhaps you should stop making assumptions My brothers dogs ARE dumb, they are also NOT attractive. In my first post i made it clear that these are the only two dogs from this establishment that I personally know. Perhaps to you a sample of two dogs in meaningless but perhaps for someone considering purchasing a puppy from this place it has meaning. Would you prefer I say these dogs are extremely attractive and intelligent??? Why should I lie? Why is it unkind to say his dogs are unnattractive when I think they are unattractive?? Where did I suggest that all crossbreeds are unattractive?? The ONLY dogs i mentioned in my post were my brothers 2 oodles. YOU are the one who is generalising my comments to 'all crossbreeds'.

This is so NOT your fault Christine. I have cats, 3 of them and they are all indoor cats. They have access to an outdoor enclosure 24/7 and I would NEVER let any of them loose outside. Its the irresponsible cat owner who is to blame for what happened. Your dogs are not evil or vicious, they were just being dogs and they were safely confined to their own yard. Its a horrible thing for you to have to go through. RIP Kitty

Before you run down crossbreeds, I suggest you be aware that many people on this forum have crossbreeds and that stupidity and eating whatever they feel like trying isn't limited to crossbreeds. There are also many attractive crossbreeds. I have no doubt Rivergum are puppyfarmers but running down crossbreeds wins you no points. Im not running down crossbreeds? I have a crossbreed myself. What I am saying is that the oodles from this place are extremely dumb dogs. Granted I have only met two, but they were both from different litters several yrs apart I tend to think they are typical of what these ppl produce. Perhaps you should not be so quick to assume..

My brother and his wife have two oodles from this particular establishment. The dogs seem healthy enough although one clearly lacked socialisation with humans when very young. The biggest thing ive noticed about his dogs is how incredibly stupid they are, seriously. They eat ANYTHING and do mean anything. This has results in 2 emergency surguries, once after the dog ate a magnetic pool game, second time after one of them ate a skewer off the barbie - wooden skewer and all. They are brainless and not terribly attractive dogs although as puppies they were cute and fluffy. They dont have much personality and tend to yap. I could not live with dogs as brainless as these two are! Poodles in particular are intelligent dogs, they have clearly bred the brains out of their dogs. Unless she wants an unattractive, stupid dog with unknown health/behavioural problems, I would steer clear of buying an oodle from this puppy farm!

I bought my golden bitch sight unseen from a kennel 1000km away. I bought her main reg as a show prospect. I cant remember receiving any photos of her at all, so meeting her at the airport was very exciting. I trusted this breeder completely as my family had a golden from her (as a pet) over 20 yrs ago. Whilst I didnt receive any pics of my pup, the breeder did answer any questions I had via email. As she was my first purebred pup purchase it didnt occur to me to ask for pics. I assumed this was just the normal process. I was extremely happy with the puppy the breeder chose for me. The breeder is still very helpful 4 yrs on. With my 2nd golden pup the breeder (different breeder) sent weekly photos of the litter. Once it was deceided which pup I was getting I also got individual pics of him. This breeder lived even further away than the other one. Again I was thrilled with the puppy when he arrived. This breeder has been very supportive ever since. I think different breeders do things differently. A lack of puppy pics does not mean you arent getting a quality pup. I think breeders who have been in dogs for many many years are less likely to send pics as they never used to before the net existed, and it may not occur to them to do things differently now.

Where Are Your Dogs When You're On Dol?
indigirl replied to poochmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
The 6 iggies are all in their crates asleep in the back room, Karma my golden is asleep on her bed in the dining room, Chilli the kelpie x is asleep in her crate (also in the dining room) even though its open- she LOVES her crate, and Wally the sheltie is asleep in the loungeroom. I have a number of toddler gates to keep different sized dogs separated so no one gets hurt, so they are all confined to their designated areas. The bengal cats are racing around playing chasey in the cat enclosure, and Archie my Laperm cat is sitting next to me demanding attention. -
