Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
indigirl replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
I find I am thinking about Jed constantly, day and night. Considering Ive never even met her or talked to her on the phone, her situation has had a profound impact on me. I guess its testament to how much she was respected on DOL. I hope those at the 'coal face' are managing ok. As much as it will be great to hear shes off the ventilator and conscious I am also dreading that time as its then she will remember whats happened and what shes lost. -

Steve are they sure Magnus wasnt injured? If he was injured in the fire he could be laying out in the scrub somewhere.. -

+1... let alone her home and all her personal belongings. I have no idea what if anything has been salvable. Here's hoping they are managing to save some of her possessions. Oh god I hadnt even considered her home! Im an idiot.. it jsut hadnt crossed my mind. I guess though that material things can always be replace, I jsut pray she was well insured. But no matter how well insured she was her beloved dogs are gone forever .. -

It sounds as if the death toll may be much higher than originally thought. If she had at least 20 cavs and only 8 survived, thats 12 cavs alone... plus 3 boxer pups plus an unknown number of adult boxers. Its jsut horrific I am having trouble wrapping my mind around losing that many dogs all at once, not to mention years of blood sweat and tears breeding them. I cant even begin to imagine how Jed is going to feel when she is conscious. I dont know how you would ever receover psychologically from that kind of loss -

Joining MDBA Pacers is another way we can contribute is it not? The top membership is $50, im sure that money will also go towards the ppl that need it most like Jed. -

Just saw Jed's story on Sky News. The whole flavour was about a woman who dearly loved her dogs and risked her life to try and save them. There was nothing but admiration for her commitment to her dogs expressed. Her dogs were described as 'show dogs'. They said when the firey's arrived they heard someone calling out to them. They found Jed lying on the ground out the back of the house. Breaks my heart to think she was conscious and will probably remember every minute of the horror I am so grateful that not all of her dogs were lost. At least Jed will have some of her dogs to go home to. -

I saw that too, but the dog in the footage looked young. I believe Magnus is around 10? I would expect him to have some grey on his muzzle etc. Although the RSPCA must have seen/held Magnus at one point if they know the dog got away. -

I can only imagine the horror of the scene as Jed tried to save her dogs.. I pray her dogs died quickly. Fingers crossed it IS Magnus who is on the run and he is found alive and well asap. Thank god some of her puppies survived, so she can continue to breed if/when she is ready. I pray Jed is able to survive her injuries and return to full health asap. I jsut feel sick. Fire has always been my concern with my animals. Its the reason I have not put security screens on any of my windows, and why I leave the back door unlocked at night. I know I could escape by jumping out my bedroom window but Im not 100% sure I could get all my animals out. -

Yeah its cute.. until the leopard matures and decides to disembowel the golden lol My 4yr old female golden weighs 31kg btw. She is at the top end of the height range for a female though.

I forgot to mention that the cockroches in darwin are HUGE.. you can almost hear them walk *shudder*

Only 6 more posts now LOL There are 3 weather cycles in Darwin - the Wet, the Dry and the Buildup, its hot all year round. The wet = summer, rains every day, everything grows green green green. Sure its hot but the rain is a lovely relief The Dry = winter - this is paradise on earth. Cool eveings and warm days its superb. Its also when all the zillions of tourists descend The build up = sept - Summer.. arghhh its hot hot hot.. and humid humid humid with no rain jsut more humidity. Its known as the silly season as ppl go troppo with the heat lol. My advice is if youa re goingto move there go NOW its the end of the wet perfect time to go there. If you arrive for the buildup the heat will make you nuts. If you go now you can acclimatise before the build up starts. Also loads more work now as all the tourists are arriving and the city will be booming. Good Luck!

I spent 5yrs in the NT. Its a fabulous place to live - once you acclimatise to the heat! The heat will kill you initially LOL its like Ooh Myyy GawwwwDDD Things to consider before moving to Darwin would be: -Its very isolated from the rest of the country, its 2-3 days drive at LEAST to get to another part of the country so if you plan on taking your dogs on holidays with you be prepared for daysss of driving -Very high cost of living -Your life is dictated by the weather -at certain times of year Darwin is cut off by road, the only way in and out is via the air -everything EVERYTHING is green, and you will get sick and tired of green lol. You could plant a broomstick and it would grow leaves up there -there is heaps to do and see, great part of the country to explore. Kakadu is so-so but other places like Litchfield are beautiful. -GREAT lifestyle! Best in the country! Very outdoorsy, very very cosmopolitan, theres always something to do and its very easy to build a social network -6 weeks annual leave a year are standard -very close to asia if you want to travel - when iw as there it was cheaper to fly to Bali for a week than to fly to Sydney LOL -tons of work, you can arrive and find work within 24hrs -loads of pubs/clubs huge nightlife. They say ppl move to the NT and become drinkers - and they arent kidding. I drank more in my 5yrs there than at any other time in my life LOL Theres a dog show scene etc etc. Dogs are allowed on ebaches there so theres plenty of places to run your dog. I wasnt showing when I lived there but my firends were. There is also dog obedience and agility too i think. -if you are into sport then you will love it there -theres a decent size Uni if you want to study -very transient population so jsut about anybody fits in up there P.S Another 7 posts and the mysterious Off Topic will magically appear for you :p

What To Do If A Dog Off Lead Attacks Your Dog
indigirl replied to miss shel's topic in General Dog Discussion
I stand in front of my dogs and shriek obceneties at the approching dog lol. I also stamp my feet and yell in an angry voice to warn it. If it still continues to come towards me I will kick the dog (i wear runners while walking the dogs) if it gets close enough - but that rarely happens. They almost always back off. I had a staffy come right for my old dog and I klicked it hard in the ribs while yelling my head off. The owners came out of the house and I admit i used VERY unladylike language regarding thier dog and what I thought of it going for my dog whilst mine was on lead. Years ago i actuallty hit a GSD in the ribs with half a house brick as it was on top of my very passive golden and biting his neck. My dog was yelping his head off so I reached for the nearest object I could find - it happened to be a brick. One good thump in the ribs with the brick and it let go of my dog in a hurry. That dog was lucky I didnt hit it in the head! Im petrified of GSDs but was scared it would seriously injure my golden so I did what I felt was necessary to protect him. -
Ithought they did have thier own breeding program? Btu also got pups donated by reg breeders? I have a female golden, at 4 yrs of age she is still high maintenance LOL. She would have been a huge fat FAIL as a guide dog! She has the concentration span of a goldfish! The golden guide dogs I have seen have tended to be on the smaller/weedy side. I am assuming becuase a smaller dog is more practical costs less to feed etc.
-
I jsut worked out that it costs me $151 a month to feed 7 dogs and 3 cats (including litter), so $1800 a year. I feed a mixture of dry and raw to both dogs and cats. One dog has a special diet due to a health issue so he costs more to feed than the others which pushed the costs up.

Starting Work - How Can I Keep My Goldie Busy?
indigirl replied to Snowball's topic in General Dog Discussion
You need 2 clam shells fill one with sand and bury little treats in there. Fill the other half full with water. No matter what the weather she will enjoy paddling playing in the water. I leave a big container fullof toys in thier run, they then get out the toys they want to play with. Of course tipping the bucket over and digging thru the toys is half the fun. -
A puppy yes I would. When they wanted to amputate my 12 yr old bullmastiff crosses' rear leg due to cancer I said no. I thought as his age it would just be too hard to adjust. Plus hed had his cruciates both done in yrs previously and had arthritis in both knees. I felt it would be too much strain on the remainding knee. I had them remove as much of the growth as they could, and i got another year with him before he was PTS at 13. A young healthy dog can easily adjust.

As the weather is getting coller it copuld jsut be stiff/sore in the early mornings? -
Karma, Ripley, Nyx and Luna were all chosen for me by their breeders as show prospects and were 'mailed' to me as baby puppies. My first moments with all of them were me peering into an airline crate dying to get a look at the latest addition to my doggy family. Capri was also mailed to me but he was 3yrs old when I got him so had seen pics and knew what he would look like. Sultan I bought as a 2yr old from his breeder as a pet iggy. I had long admired the breed but wanted to know what they were like to live with before I jumped in with both feet and bought a show quality puppy. I picked Sultan up in person from his breeder in SA. She had a yard full of iggies plus a litter of pups so it was all a tad overwhelming. On the 4 hr drive home however I got to know Sully a little and found him to be a lovely little guy. Chilli I adopted from the local RSPCA. I went to 'check out' the litter of kelpie/curly coated retriever crosses they had and Chilli was the smallest pup and was being bullied by her siblings. She was crawling around on her belly but was following me. I fell for her and ended up taking this funny looking puppy home with me. Wally the sheltie I adopted from Albury Dog Rescue after his elderly owner died and he was dumped in the pound earlier this year. He was 12yrs old with a gimpy leg and deaf as a post so I wasnt sure what to expect. When I met him I was really surprised as he was a beautiful looking boy. Ive got no puppy pics on this computer so cant add them until I get home.

What Don't Most People Know About Your Breed?
indigirl replied to RallyValley's topic in General Dog Discussion
My iggy is not a 'baby whippet' and yes they really ARE meant to be this small and skinny. My golden is not a long haired labrador and yes there IS a difference between a golden and a lab. That some goldens (like mine) dig and dig and dig and dig.. and some never outgrow this. -
lay concrete - thats what i did! Good luck!

My investment property on the central coast had a terrible flea problem. The tennant had tried and tried to get rid of the fleas but was unable to. I was able to treat and rectify the problem over several days, this is what I did. 1. Flea bombed the house 2. Had professional pest company spray the entire yard and under the house 3. had handyman use galvanised mesh to fence off under the deck and house - the sand/dirt there was a prolific breeding ground for fleas. 4. Bath the dog with fle product then gave a Capstar daily for 2 months. 5. Applied Advantage flea control to the dog every month since. 6. Got tennant to get rid of anything likely to be a flea haven - including old carpet on the back deck and the like. Plus remove a pile of old timber etc. 7. Got handyman to mow all the lawns and pull the weeds and neaten the entire yard up. This process cost me around $500, but it solved the problem. The daily Capstar ensured that any fleas that did jump on the dog would die immediately. the Advantage meant that the breeding cycle of any living fleas was stopped. I paid for the Capstar and still pay for the Advantage as my tennant is on a pension plus the fleas were introduced to the yard bya previous tennant and were not her fault. Her yard has remained flea free for over a year now. I also told the tennant that ANY dog entering her yard from now on MUST be on flea control or it isnt allowed in. I told her i will NOT be paying to treat any future flea infestations as they will be her fault.

Im the same, I wont leave my dogs overnight at the vet either. If they are with me and are sick I will sleep next to them and so on. If you are lucky a vet will check the dog once through the night. Drips arent that difficult to manage overnight at home.
