  1. I run iggy rescue along with another Doler. I also show/breed Italians. Before we set up iggy rescue I did all breeds rescue, much prefer breed specific rescue I have to say! ETA Rescue is not 'practical', i dont do rescue because it makes good sense financially. If you are lucky you just break even but often you dont.
  2. I own a storm phobic dog who can smell/sense a storm long before they arrive. Once storm starts and she is freaking out i SILENTLY put her thundershirt on, crate her and then throw a blanket over the crate. I completely ignore her from then on until the storm has passed. Any other response from me just makes her worse.
  3. Wow thats a lot of dogs! I would never even be able to remember all their names.. im guessing they dont live inside LOL no one except the mentally confused could have that many dogs living indoors. I dont ever want to have so many dogs that they cant sleep in the house and be pets, thats my rule of thumb. Plus provide adequate food, stimulation exercise etc etc.
  4. My first breed is golden retrievers, I had a golden growing up, come from a family that loves goldens etc so it was kind of a no brainer that a golden would be the dog for me. My 2nd breed, the italian greyhound was chosen after I became fascinated with an iggy i rescued years ago. I had decided when I was too old to run a golden around the ring I would switch to iggies, however I ended up obtaining my first iggy much sooner than expected tho.
  5. Some things need to be planned for. I'd rather my dogs be taken on by someone who agrees to take responsiblility for rehoming them than see them end up at the pound. no doubt - just wasn't the cheeriest thread I saw to each lunch over, and thought by having a little chuckle at it I could lighten the mood. I don't like thinking about death, and now I'm thinking about death....... If you are single and have pets its a legitimate concern. My family would be unable/unwilling to take my dogs on. So the purebred dogs would go back to their breeders for rehoming most likely and the others would go to rescue. The cats would also go back to their breeders for rehoming I would think. Reminds me I need to update my will! I would also leave a good amount of money to assist with getting the dogs back to breeders, rehoming them, kenneling fees whilst waiting to be transported etc. I also think a couple of my close friends would probably offer homes to a particular dog or whatever should I pass away.
  6. I have italian greyhounds who invented the word 'sensitive' lol. I find being firm with them works well in terms of unwanted behaviours. I will says 'no thats enough' and wont give into them if they are sooking etc. My golden rule is I NEVER pat/cuddle etc a dog who is jsut sooking. I wait until they stop then i go to them. Havign said that I have owned an anxious kepie cross in the past, and I know how frustrating it can be at times. If you cuddle them when they are anxious though it only reinforces the behaviour. I have a storm phobic dog. When we have storms I put a thunder jacket on her, put her in a crate and cover the crate with a blanket then basically ignore her. I have found this settles her far more quickly than any other method, even though it sounds heartless.
  7. I know.... out of all my dogs guess which one is my fav?? The blonde hairy cow of course lol Her greatest joy in life is tormenting me i swear.. none of the others are as badly behaved as her. She had to spend 3 weeks in Adelaide earlier in the year, i missed her soo much! She is cheeky demanding loud and obnoxious but she has my heart
  8. Lol Theres a reason I call her Karma Cow I love her but she drives me nutssss
  9. *rushes off to cram Karma my evil golden retriever into a postpak to send her to Tamika* See pic below .. dont let her sweet expression fool you! Behind that sweet face lies a deadly mind lol
  10. Wow Tamika and Jessie! Tamika that is an amazing achievement, cant believe you have trained this 'untrainable dog' yourself. Your story belongs on a anti BSL site somewhere! Pssst Tamika! One of my dogs is a royal pain in the a.. can i post her to you to be trained? :p
  11. I know where you are coming from Gayle. Everyday I pick up each of my iggies and give them a cuddle and a kiss even though at times it feels time consuming if Im running late for work etc. I also give the 3 bigger dogs pats and kisses and a belly rub everyday before I leave. I repeat this process again before bed. My thinking is that I dont know whats around the corner, I dont ever want to lose one of my dogs knowing I hadnt cuddled them that day, that I had missed that last opportunity to tell them I love them. Sometimes they are gone in the blink of an eye, I learned that with Ripley, thier lives are far too short. Good on you for showing your dog, winning is only one aspect of dog showing. Besides I take the best dog home each show anyway!
  12. Best martingales ive ever had http://www.karenskollars.net/collars/collars.html All handmade and fantastic quality. I have her collars for all my iggies but has also bought a couple of staghound size collars in the past and wow.
  13. For my first main reg iggy I knew i wanted a blue bitch, and I was lucky enough to find one I know I hope to breed a black iggy one day. I like red iggies too(i have one), but really any colour iggy that is nicely marked looks pretty good to me. I actually didn't like he look of pied IGs initially but now I own a seal pied boy and i think hes stunning!
  14. Not all sighthounds are hunters, my iggies will chase but not kill. Moral to the story : Get yourself an iggy! :p I also have indoor cats and ppl who let their cats roam are my pet peeve.
  15. When I was sick with pnuemonia a few yrs ago my kitten Archie stayed with me the entire time. I was miserable, in pain and felt awful as I live alone. Archie never left my side. Everytime I woke up he was curled up against me, a living hot water bottle. Its hard to put into words what a comfort he was. After I came home from hospital he was the same. I think thats why he's my fav cat and so bonded to me now, he spent about 3 weeks of his life in fully body contact with me lol.
  16. +1 see http://www.naybesa.com/?p=3733 for additional info and pictures (and some atrocious spelling). Seems there's suggestion that Cocaine was well fenced and someone let him out, and some witnesses saw no attacks on children . . . cute looking pup. Wow hands up everyone who is surprised.. poor dog .. i note she shot the dog in the leg (she wasnt trying to kill the DOG) and there were 4 shots fired ETA I especially liked the bit where the victims son heard his mother screaming his dad had been shot... so he went and got HIS gun.. nope nothing odd here, just your average American family
  17. have you tried sashas blen or similar? Any kind of Glucosamine product might help him too. Poor old boy, I hates seeing my old golden get to that stage i can imagine how you are feeling.
  18. Even so its hard to imagine anyone being stupid enough to shoot the dog while someone was holding it. Better the guy holding it lost a finger or got a nasty bite than got killed by a bullet you would think! I was suggesting what might have happened. I didn't say it was a sensible thing to do, did I. No need to get narky.. I was commenting on the absolute stupidity of the wife
  19. Even so its hard to imagine anyone being stupid enough to shoot the dog while someone was holding it. Better the guy holding it lost a finger or got a nasty bite than got killed by a bullet you would think!
  20. Oh Im so sorry. Your love and devotion for your dogs has always been evident in your posts. Can only imagine how you are feeling. RIP Benson. Taken too soon
  21. Plus estimates of how much extra they will cost you with the carbon tax in power etc :p They can them demonstrate that pet rocks are a good option for many!
  22. Methinks there is much more to this story.
  23. Wish someone with lots more money than me would import silken windhounds and get them recognised!
