  1. Thanks for all the suggestions. Things have progressed since earlier today. My bitch looks very different even than she did this morning. I am thinking it was a phantom that just stopped dead. Like she had blown up in the ribs and it was very obvious but her ribs are much smaller than they were. A breeder who saw her on the weekend and then saw a video of her today was like.. wow ..what a change. I have a stethescope and had been trying to listen for heartbeats. But apart from getting sore ears i wasnt achieving a whole lot. Her teats were pink and standing upright and had clearly grown in size but werent huge. When my golden reabsorbed her litter she just stopped growing larger one day, and was suddenly full of beans. But she didnt just shrink in size like my iggy bitch has. Shes like a balloon that has been slowly deflating, all very wierd. At least I know now, phew.
  2. PomsNZ good idea 're asking to be on stand by in case they have a cancellation. Unfortunately 300km is everything when you have a chronic pain issue which involves blinding headaches. I am already driving 6hrs on Sunday. I'm due to get a cortisone injection on 1st Dec (first avail appointment) afterbthat I can drive long distance no worries. It's just not terribly safe to drive at speed in remote areas when you are in a lot of pain. It's very very hard to focus and concentrate properly on the road. I guess it's hard to really sporeciate that if you never drive in remote areas. I do need to consider my own health and safety here as well as my dogs. It's just crappy timing and a crappy situation. I think I'm just going to have to accept I'm screwed lol.
  3. Yeah vet told vet nurse to tell me he's sorry but can't do the ultrasound til Mondsy. I explained the situation, they just saud sorry can't fit you Sometimes living in a remote area sucks
  4. Ive considered that, jsut not terribly keen on flying a bitch who is a nervous dog as it is, that far along in her pregnancy. Would you fly one of your dogs that far in whelp if it wasnt an emergency?
  5. these are the things one MUST do!! I would travel anywhere for the health and welfare of one of my bitches! IN fact we have just lost a litter and we travelled over 400ks just to make sure she was ok, but I guess everyone is different, to me the dog is number one priority No matter what the cost or travel!! Its not a question of my dogs 'health & welfare". Im frustrated I cant access the vet services I want until next week. Whilst you may be happy to pay more than $200 for an xray - im not, unless the dog has a health issue. I can and have paid this amount twice now for xrays that one of my dogs needed. Ironically I could fly the dog to Sydney and pay for an xray there then fly her home all for roughly the same cost as one xray here! My iggy bitch doesnt need an xray, she is doing fine. I WANT an xray or ultrasound to determine whether she is still in whelp. Likewise for driving a 600k round trip - would be a no brainer if my dog needed it. However I am frustrated that even though there are 2 vets here I cant get a quality ultrasound until next week. Whislt your lifestyle may be conducive to hopping in the car for a quick 6hr trip without a care in the world, mine is more complicated than that. Could i do it? yes if i had to. But it would involve planning and likely some time off work. I have to drive to South Australia on the Sunday, to deliver a dog - unfortunately nowhere near or past a vet. I currently have health issues which make it difficult for me to drive long distance, im already stretching it by the drive on Sunday, I doubt I would be well enough to work Monday if i drove Saturday as well. We dont all have the luxury of being able to rush off at a moments notice unless its an emergency. Some of us have other things we need to consider as well. My dogs ARE my number one priority but I also have a life, and it would make my life so much less complicated if i knew for sure she was no longer in whelp.
  6. The next closest vet is 300km away.. assuming I can get an appointment on a saturday afternoon as I work fulltime. Its a tad more than an 'extra mile'
  7. Hiyas, one of my iggy bitches is now 7 weeks pregnant with her maiden litter. She is a petite bitch and while her ribs have been as wide as the ocean her belly hasnt swollen much at all. Have asked a local experienced breeder to look at her this past weekend, she assured me the dog was definately in whelp. Also asked a very experienced iggy breeder who assured me that if she was only carrying 1 or 2 pups she may not 'show' in the belly until her final week. Last night i noticed she seemed to have changed a little in shape, her chest seemed to be not as wide but I thought ok maybe the pup is shifting down and by morning she will have a swollen belly. Nope this morning her ribs def not as wide, plus she is racing around. My gut feeling is she has reabsorbed the puppies, if she has thats just one of those things. What has me tearing my hair out in frustration is that the only vet with decent ultrasound equipment cant offer me an appointment until MONDAY. The other vet has limited ultrasound skills and an ultrasound machine that came out of the ark with Noah. Plus he charges $215 for an Xray! I cant afford that kind of money for a single xray! Im soo frustrated that I cant access vet services unless I pay a fortune. The Rspca is beyond useless - how can they not have an appointment available until next week? Anyone else have any suggestions? I have tried listeing for heartbeats with a stethescope and I did think i heard a pup's heartbeat on the weekend, but im not sure. I cant get a baby doppler here before next week as you cant buy them locally. I need to know if my bitch is still pregnant, as I need to cancel my leave from work if she isnt. I also need to book plane tickets to Sydney for work, and if she isnt having pups then I will spend a few days extra there with friends. If i dont book my tickets this week I may well not get a flight as the flights sell out up to 3 weeks beforehand. Arghhhhh!!! Im SOOOO frustrated!!!!
  8. Wow its going to be happy mayhem! Good on you for saving both these boys. Cant wait to see pics!
  9. Im forever bouncing dog names around in my head. Though when the dog arrives I often go for a completly new name. Like with Fluke my recent boxer addition. Had my heart set on Trigger as a name for my next male dog, but that didnt suit a boxer so ended up calling him Fluke. I also have cats but always hope the breeders have a cool name for them already I can just use, or i choose name in like 2 seconds. I put zero time into choosing cat names, no idea why. Of my currrent 5 cats, 3 were named by their breeders and 2 i chose their names literally in seconds.
  10. This is not the Spanish inquisition. As a breeder what I am looking for initially is if i 'click' with potential owners. If i dont they wont be getting a puppy as I want owners who will keep in touch with me and have a good r/ship with me. Of course I will answer their questions and have plenty to ask myself, but initially i just want to get a feel for what they are like as people. Try using basic social skills. Introduce yourself, tell the breeder a little bit about yourself and your previous dog experience. Try telling her why you want a puppy of this breed, do you want the dog for pet/show do you plan to do obedience/dog sports etc. Maybe ask what kind of homes she looks for for her puppies and when she may have pups available. If you have a preference for sex/colour in a pup i would mention that too. Try asking what questions she might have of YOU as a potential owner of one of her puppies. If you currently have a dog attach a pic of it to your email. If the breeder responds to your email then start from there. 50 questions is not the way to go. Get to know the breeder and make conversation, you will soon have the answers to your questions.
  11. Im not sure that a 6 month old sibe and a lab are the right companions for a whippet. Whippets have skin that can tear and arent as robust as a young sibe etc. I would be worried that the whippet would be injured. I run iggy rescue and we also rehome whippets sometimes, and on the face of it we would not be happy with you adopting a whippet from us with your current dogs. Perhaps a larger sighthound might be a good option?
  12. Any compsny that makes dog trailers would be able to make one.
  13. Thanks Hannah and Shazzapug. Ordered a stethoscope and found some great vids on you tube of ppl using baby dopplers to detect puppy's heartbeats. So they def work.
  14. Excuse my ignorance. By baby doppler i mean the portable devices sold to parents so they can detect thier baby's heartbeat whilst in utero. I assumed this is what ppl would understand I meant by baby doppler. If you put 'fetal doppler' or 'baby doppler' into the search engine on ebay you will see a multitude of these devices. My question was whether they can be used to detect puppy's heartbeats in utero. Would be a much more cost effective alternative than having an ultrasound if the goal is simply to determine whether the bitch is in whelp. ETA They are either 2mhz or 3mhz devices if that helps.
  15. Hi, we all ready have ones for dogs. Great little portable ones. But I would would be happy to use a baby one. I think they work on the same principal. where did you get the dog one from?
  16. Hiyas wondering how effective using a baby doppler on a pregnant bitch is to confirm pregnancy?
  17. Contact Petsearch, they are a wealth of knowledge.
  18. Cat collars are what we use at iggy rescue. They are just for I'D tags we don't walk the dogs on them.
  19. Aww yours must be broken then
  20. Sounds like labs are priced very similar to goldens. They are hugely popular too hence the price breeders are able to ask. I breed italian greyhounds which are tiny and not at all common and they cost $1200 - $1500 in Syd and Melb, and $1000 - $1200 in other areas. But they have small litters and demand is pretty high. Its demand that sets the price. Goldens and labs have large litters and there are lots of breeders but demand is huge. Iggies have few breeders and small litters so demand for the pups available is high. Some other popular breeds - like boxers, are $1500 - $2000 so it could be worse wantsapuppy
  21. I breed italian greyhounds and at least 90% of ppl who enquire about puppies want a blue pup. So colour is a big deal in this breed. I match temperament plus colour pref to an owner as much as possible, but temperament is more important to me. If the temp doesnt suit a home they dont get the pup no matter how much they want that colour.
  22. dandybrush i dont train my iggies, that would just be a waste of time they arent the sharpest tools in the shed plus they like to do as they please lol I take all the bigger dogs to obedience until they have learned the basics. I exercise the bigger dogs in 2 groups of 2 every day. The iggies dont like going for walks but i try to get them to the fenced dog park once a week so they can have a good run(I take them in 2 groups of 3). They all sleep indoors and i rotate which iggies are on my lap during the evenings.
  23. I was a solo dog owner for 7 yrs and i ADORED my little kelpie cross. I got a 2nd dog after we caught a guy breaking into our townhouse at night - while we were asleep inside! So I got a big scary dog. After owning 2 dogs I knew I would always own at least 2 from then on. I only have a pack of iggies atm becuase I am breeding and I live in a remote area. After doing a 10hour round drive several times for a dog mating i decided it was MUCH easier to have my own stud dogs. I wont ever go back to just one dog, but when im old n grey will prolly just have 2.. or maybe 3 lol.
  24. Haha CBL not wrong, but all of them at once can be a little overwhelming at first
