Emery, hope your Mum's dog is all ok now. It is so easy to end up cutting them accidently Tiggy, I will have to watch tonight
-
Also be aware that unless you own your own clinic vets in WA get paid poorly and work crap hours. I wanted to be a vet but am so glad I didn't because I am paid a a huge amount more in my current job and have regular hours with good flexibility :-) Although I do wish I had access to drugs as I would if I was a vet as half the time I get one out It is purely to get the appropriate drugs (for the animals not me )

I have had most of 3 years at the beginning of the alphabet :p It is rare for ACD to be in the ring and it has only been in the last year that a younger male has competed :D ETA: It is actually often easier being first as you are there when the judge and steward discuss how the dogs are to enter the ring. Later on in the night they can sometimes expect you to know and don't tell you It will probably be on one of the public holiday days between Christmas and NY

Emery - at this stage I am still free Nationals weekend ;) I also clarify with some judges what they have asked for as I don't always understand mumble too well :p If you aren't sure they are happy to resay what they want you to do
-
You are welcome to have a go showing a Lappy ;) We like getting them used to different handlers Banjo is a Mummy's boy so won't show for anyone else Judges aren't too scary And particularly with young pups most of them have a conversation with the dog - they ignore the handler except for asking age usually and telling you want to do though I need to organise a session with E before NYE to run through how to show Taavi - you are welcome to bring Gibbs along too and I can give you a "how to show a dog" lesson and then you can make more of an informed decision I am sure Taavi would like to play with Gibbs again too.
-
I don't mind naughty puppies either But for a new handler a not so naughty puppy is slightly better so they don't they are a bit more likely to relax E was horrified by Taavi's behaviour at his first show until we reassured her that he is a baby and it really doesn't matter and we were just happy that he had fun :D
-
Agreed completely! And I cannot wait until the first Lappy Champ show in Vic next year :D :D :D :D WA, Your girl is doing so well You are planning to go to Vic aren't you so I can meet her in person? :p I can see so much of Louis in Anikka, hopefully she won't be one of those babies that wins big as a youngster and then does nothing when mature but if she keeps maturing as she is she will be lovely
-
If you want him shown SG you could see if one of us would do it or get a junior handler they are normally more than willing and it gives them experience. or come to some open shows as they tend to be smaller (trainee judges) and you can often take a few shots if you feel it wasn't done properly. i used these to learn and build up confidence :D Or there are enough of us on here who would take him in the ring for you the first time or two if you want to give it a go That is what we have done with Taavi - E has been told she is showing him at his last Baby show on NYE but we have got him to the stage that he isn't too naughty in the ring now :D
-
Emery, organise some lessons with Bedazzled You can also start in CCD rather than CD ;) So your dog is working onlead for all but the recall

There is politics in anything you do with animals. I have never had an issue with showing dogs and we are friendly with everyone. People we have been "warned off" of are friendly back to us as well We don't run with any "crowds" but our own, we don't show to be popular :p We have only had support from people for both the Lappies and Banjo, at least to our face, and I don't care what anyone says about me behind my back coz it really doesn't affect me if I don't know what they are saying  I know my dogs' faults and am probably pickier about them than any of the side line critics But I am lucky enough to have a great group of people to hang around with at shows who also don't go into showing thinking it is all about the winning
-
Anikka missed having Jerry Whippet in front of her at the shows this weekend as she enjoyed playing with him in the show line up the first two shows :D Obviously when the judge wasn't wanting to look at them and so they didn't impact on others. At Wanneroo a photographer also got some brilliant photos of the baby JRT playing with the baby Goldy in the line up This weekend other dogs didn't want to play (or their owners didn't want them too :p) and so I did a bit of stack practise and a bit of playing - Anikka was doing some lovely spins last night
-
So are most pups. But don't you have to train him to pay attention to you for obedience anyway? Showing is a good way to get them used to performing in public without the pressure of always having to be good If a baby or even minor mucks around noone really cares - well the occasional judge but most overlook it If you don't want to show then you don't have to. But don't blame it on the dog ;) The plans you have for him when he is older requires a much more disciplined dog than showing does We actually like it when Anikka does a few baby jumps in the ring when she is meant to be gaiting as it proves she isn't a robot and that she is having fun ;) Sounds like everyone had a good weekend Emery, you have to wonder why size is so important! The number of dogs who are overheight for their breed but still win big against equally good but in height dogs is amazing :p

After Some Advice, About Purchasing An English Staffy
mirawee replied to Bud Buns's topic in General Dog Discussion
Here is a bit of "light" reading for you :D http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/170006-staffordshire-bull-terrier/page__pid__3772839#entry3772839 As for shows, on the DogsVic website there will be a list of shows. ETA: If it says "parents have papers" rather than stating the pups are registered I would think that the pups won't have their own papers. -
Go the Mini Dobe :D You certainly should be proud of her And well done Kyzer! We believe in you (even if you Mum doesn't :p ) Hopefully Kelpie baby will come before Lappy baby next year ;) The Lappy will also technically be my Mum's dog And I may even let her show it... occasionally

After Some Advice, About Purchasing An English Staffy
mirawee replied to Bud Buns's topic in General Dog Discussion
Staffies aren't a breed I have a lot to do with although I do love them In terms of papers - if I was to get a "bull" breed I don't think I would get one without papers to prove exactly what they are in this age of Breed Specific Legistration. If the dog has papers you also have more of a guarantee that your dogs actually are purebred. I would also want to see the mother and at least photos of the father if they are in the same State - or if buying from interstate I would want to see photos of both parents and photos of the Mum with the pups People who supply dogs without papers are also less likely to have health tested the parents, which for me is a big thing. I have no real ethical problems with people breeding unregistered dogs as long as they have actually gone to the trouble of testing the parents for possible health conditions. So make sure you find out exactly what pre-breeding tests should be done on the parents and if there are any extra checks that should be done on the pups before they are rehomed (ie in some breeds pups usually have an eye exam around 7-8 weeks). Good luck finding a new family member! -
Why? It is less stressful than obedience by far! Amypie, I am very lucky with the Lappies I have to play with And it gives me a puppy fix which is great :D I still want my own pup(s) next year though :D

I am so tired! Am nearly happy to be at work so that I can rest Such a full on weekend just passed with barely any time to sit down all day! For some silly reason I thought entering 3 shows over 2 days was a good idea :p However if your dogs do well you end up running around lots! Banjo was his usual self... has broken ears under cover as it is so noisy and would much prefer to be riding on the quad bike than stacking in the show ring :p Particularly given how humid it was yesterday However the Lappies certainly made up for it! Taavi (boy baby) was a good boy all weekend and his owner should be very proud of him She needs to find something to wear for his last show in Baby though as she IS going to have a go at showing herself :D Lumi (Taavi's sister) was also much better behaved for her owner than at her first show. Anikka (girl baby - unrelated to the other 2) is just a star! She has now won Baby in Group at all 5 shows she has been in, and also won BABY IN SHOW on Saturday :D But what I can't believe is the attitude on this little 4.5 month old livewire! She ended up in the ring 12 times over the weekend and even at 10.30 last night showed her socks off. This girl just gives 110% in the show ring (even if she is apparently a "tornado with teeth" at home ) I wish she was mine as she would be a super sports puppy as well - might have to tell Lauren she will need to aim her at agility and obedience too :D Arlo (Intermediate boy we bred - lives with Lauren) is also just the bestest dog :D He won Intermediate in Group on Saturday and at the Open show yesterday. He also looked after Lauren so well in the Open show as I told her on Saturday that she would be showing him in it, her very first go at showing (and got a Group award LOL) :D And then went in the ring in yesterday's Champ show with a junior handler and again just did what he was told He has his little "quirks" - such as you have to set him up behind before you do front legs :p) but for a dog who didn't start showing until he was 16 months (April this year) he is just a pleasure to show now he has figured it all out And he gives lovely hugs too LOL. Well done to all the DOL success this weekend too - particularly those who managed to do so well in the Obedience ring on Friday night

All the puppies in here are lovely And have all been doing so well! I put "my" (handled by me owned by others) two rising stars in the 2012 thread as that is where I thought they should be... But Miss Anikka has proven that she is already a star :D At 4.5 months old Anikka has now done 5 shows (4 Champs and 1 Open) and been awarded Baby Puppy in Group each time :D And on the Saturday night Champ show this weekend she went one further to pick up Baby Puppy in Show! But even better she ended up in the ring 12 times over this last weekend as we had 3 shows and even at the last show last night when in the ring at 10.30pm she was an absolute star, behaving perfectly with just a few puppy bounces to prove she isn't robot She just loves showing and is apparently a lot better behaved at shows than she is at home We also had to laugh as we got some photos taken just of her after her in Show win and the photographer said she was standing well enough for a baby... I took one look, fixed her up, baited her in front and she didn't budge even when we then put the ribbon over her back to get some extra photos :D And this is a puppy who doesn't get much show training at all! Photo below is from a couple of weeks ago.

My Lappy girl usually dumped coat at 10 weeks and lost all her under coat and only had whispy overcoat :p And it took nearly a year for her to coat up again fully as she then did a season drop before being fully coated
-
I had a dog out of the ring for over 6 months because a vet took an excessive amount (20cm x 15cm) off the side of my dog to remove a grass seed. The vet was asked at the time to shave as little as possible and he agreed - but I think he forgot to pass the message on to the vet nurse : But I would prefer the grass seed out rather than still in :p A friend recently had a grass seed removed from her dog (same breed) and the vet didn't even shave! So I will take a trip next time I need one removed (rural property + long haired dogs = grass seeds occasionally missed even when they are checked twice a day ) I am also very glad I don't take my dogs to a groomer - even when we needed to clip a few out due to bad skin allergies in summer I just did them myself.

RS, you are being picky :p AQIS is part of Customs. And it is Customs who are the ones who deal with goods that arrive by the post as far as I am aware LOL http://www.customs.gov.au/ I haven't placed an order yet There is stuff I want, but not desperately, and I don't know how big my vet bill will be from my horror fortnight so I don't want to spend money if I can avoid it
-
Aww, they are so cute! And you have got some fantastic photos of them! Is the lying on their back a breed trait? I can't remember our Lappy pups ever being on their backs that much LOL
-
I got my CC over a week ago now. As Rusky said all the shows this weekend are non-split shows. Don't know how I am going to cope with showing 4 dogs in 3 shows :p
-
Dellcara, the problem is there isn't another certificate for BIG it is a BOB certificate. I would think a retrieving Ch title is much harder than a tracking Ch. A lot of people seem to be able to get a TCh title in one season...
-
But if you get BOB that is worth 6 points then BIG worth 25 points you get an extra 19 CC points which aren't at breed level...
