  8. Cesar Milan is scrummy. Sorry, but his intelligence of dog language and behaviour surpasses most I have seen attempt it, plus he's scrummy. He always respects people enough to tell them politely what the true problem is and is a real gent. ...and he's scrummy ;)
  9. You say you have a friendly butcher. Ask for a quartered pigs head then. That will give her something to chew on, and will keep her entertained for ages. You may have to retrieve the teeth later, as some dogs bury them ;) As you have a small dog, maybe chop it up a bit small, but not too much
  10. Do a search for BARF or Raw feeding, which should give you some more info Are you feeding them to her all the time (as meals) or are they justs recreational bones (chewing for pleasure) ?
  11. Moirat, no-one, including the breeder could have predicted Pyo. So I doubt if thats why she was sold. Some bitches get it, some dont'. Those that have had it (open) can go on successfully to have normal whelp in the future too, as Allerzeit said. Hope this puts your mind at rest
  12. Open Pyo is treatable and there isn't always the need to spey, NO. It depends on the extent of it. Antibiotics usually treat OP successfully. If it was closed Pyo, then yes speying would be the answer. Why would someone say you wouldnt get a breeding bitch unless it had health problems ?
  13. Possibly a dominance Issue !
  14. I would agree with previous posts that 8 weeks is best. Regardless of how much training and socialising this pup will have had, I think you need to take into consideration that 8 weeks of age is also a very crucial stage for pup/human bonding too. This pup might have bonded better with the breeder by the time you get it ! JMO
  15. Why do you NOT want to feed veggies. If you are feeding a raw natural diet, you Must feed veggies for a balanced Diet ! A natural diet for a wolf (for instance) would be to kill an animal and to save challenging dogs from geting to the best bits firts, it would eat the stomach as it's the softest to eat quickly (which would contain raw vegetation eaten by the dead animal), then go on to soft muscles and main meat of the animal, then finally the bones to clean the teeth and provide extra nutrients etc. To understand 'how' to feed BARF you must first understand 'why' dogs benefit from feeding BARF !
  16. I am so sorry to hear about your dog. A friend just recently had the exact same thing with her dog and she was PTS after 2 days. She fitted continuously and was sedated. The vet hoped to scan her as soon as she came round, but every time she did, she would fit violently again, so because of the risk of permanent brain damage, she was PTS just 2 days ago. After exmination and many tests, it was discovered that the dog suffered a blood disorder ( not sure of medical names sorry !) that was a genetic disorder. It had nothing to do with epilepsy. I only know this much but hope it helps in some way. The vet felt so strongly about it, that he sent a medical report to the KC to have the Dam of this dog contacted and desexed immediately, so as not to pass on this problem. So sorry for your pain, it's never easy.
  17. Alpha status, pack leadership is not always achieved like this. Within many packs, the Alpha is the more relaxed dog, as he knows he has nothing to challenge. In my pack, my Alpha only needs a glancing look or certain stance to portray his status. By holding your dog down until he submits is forcing him to obey, not teaching him how and why to obey and that it's for his benefit. Eventually any dog will submit this way, or take your face off !
  18. Nivia Your pup looks lovely. I crate trained all mine from pups, and I no longer need to use them, but we have one outside and one inside, so they have their own 'space' if and when they want it, away from the others. However, you have been given great advice here, especially about bringing your pup in at night, at least for a while. There is little point in crate training, if your pup will be living outside, and yet you don't seem to want to take the advice given, saying "he's happy enough". Correct me if I'm wrong, but these guys who are advising you are the knowledgable ones, hence you coming here for advice, so please take it !
  19. Well I too feed raw and I too heard this same argument a while back about meat containing too much protien and givng too much energy. I openly asked this person how can this be justifiable when many dry food brands are filling with chemicals/preservatives etc that makes some dogs hyperactive ??? I don't push one way or the other. I too have limited time some days and feed a bowl of dry, but I personally see the difference in my dogs and what comes out of them which proves to me that raw is best. I think for anyone to be able to preach on the matter, they should first be confident in their own research about the subject.
  20. Hi, thanks so much for all the replies. Had probs with PC, so couldn't get on here :D All my dogs are fed RMB (Barf Diet) and I include supplements, veg, fish, yoghurt, raw eggs (whole) etc and have done since having them. I feed a very varied diet, so not create boredom and each of my dogs have diferent tastes for diferent meats, but with this one, I have also tried every kibble on the market and pre-prepared frozen meats etc. Just nothing gets him excited ;) I also fast once a week, to give their jaws etc a rest and the others don't even notice and do well. I also give them goats milk sometimes as Cows milk is a no-no to most nothern breeds and the few times I have tried, they have had upset tummies. We have had blood work done on him many times and every other test imaginable, except the one where they want to take out his intestines to 'have a look' He's been cleared of Malabsorbtion related problems and Pancreatic deficiencies, including Zinc Deficiency. He had teeth, jaw etc x-rayed, camera down his throat endoscopy, eosophagus checked etc, all coming back clear. He has twice had an injection to stimulate his appetitte, but nothing happened, which the vet thought nothing of. His coat, eyes, vigour, behaviour etc is all fine, he's absolutely fine in him self, which is a consolation. He only suffered bouts of diarrohea as a pup when he first came home from the breeders, but nothing since. We've tried Sorb-Vit B with him which is a weight gain product to help poor-doers etc, but you need a appetite to eat it in the first place and as soon as we add anything to his food or mince, he leaves it. We've tried deprivation if he walks away and he's not bothered. We've tried feeding at different times of day, different amounts in meals, feeding others before him/after him, you name it. He gets exersised twice a day with the others (quick walk round the block in morning and longer walk in evening) and now the weather is getting colder here, he will be run twice a week also, but again this doesn't improve his appetite and we've even tried reducing his exersise sometimes, for fear that it is making him lose weight I've researched lots into this breed, hence having 4 of them, and understand their food intake/work ratio, but this dog eats hardly anything regardless and you can see his expression change, when you give him food to "oh no, not eating again" He is the dominant boy in the pack, yet he will happily let one of the others eat his food, while he sits and watches them ??? The nutri gel sounds good but does it come in a tablet form, as I said, anything mixed in his food (liquid) he disregards, so it needs to be a tablet that I can pop in his gob before he eats. Vam paste ??? Again is there anything similar in tablet form ? Why do you think he just has no appetite ? As I said I woulnd't be bothered as my others often go a few days without eating for various reasons, but he is thin and never puts on weight, which I don't like and he was 2 in June, so should be filling out by now anyway. My other 3 are all much younger than him (under 1) and have twice the body mass that he has !!! Does anyone have a routine for gettign them excited at meal times. I've tried lots, but maybe a few new ideas could be an idea ??? Thanks again guys, you really are a knowledgable and caring bunch
  21. Believe it or not we've tried this too When we did it, he wasn't bothered at all. He would still only eat tiny amounts, so deprivation seems to make him happy, wierd dog ....lol
  22. OK to cut a very long story short one of my dogs has never really had an appetite. He was a fussy eater as a pup and after many trips to the vets and various tests over a 2 year period, NOTHING is physically wrong with him !!! He eats around a third of the food he should be eating and then only when he can be bothered. We have tried absolutely everything, trying to find out if this is a physcological problem or what ! He just has no appetite and looks at food like a chore. He has over the years been given different foods to see if he's just fussy on taste, yet nothing has tempted him enough to eat a whole meal. This wouldn't bother me, but he's underweight and now at the age of 2 I was expecting him to fill out some and mature, yet this hasn't happened, and I'm not happy about leaving him this way. I understand they can take upto 3 to mature, but he shouldn't be looking underweight as he does at this age. I've also tried satin balls for weight gain, but again they have to eat enough of the stuff to make a difference, and it didn't, as he only ate a few. I've tried other supplements for weight gain and varied the amount of meals a day, but am now stuck for what to try next. Has anyone else had this problem, all ideas appreciated
  23. Gosh, that sounds awful. I can't really give advice on the house as I've never had the problem, but with regard to the dogs, try giving them some garlic. Preferably raw/crushed, a little every day. Fleas hate the stuff and don't like sucking the blood from dogs that have garlic in their blood. You could give it in tablet form, but I personally find raw is more effective. As your dogs are at your MILs it should make it easier to treat them thoroughly with a flea spray (Frontline, if you have that there), so as not to carry them with you when you move, and continue with the garlic anyway. Hope this helps
  24. I did not imply you deliberatly make your dogs sick. I own Malamutes and they are known to suffer with Cows Milk and my statement was 'I would never feed mine milk knowing it would make them sick'. It was a personal statement. I have no style by the way. I stated what I would not feed my dogs as this thread stated. After my reply, YOU challenged my statements, who's arguing ???
