  1. Sorry but i think alot of ppl who get pound dogs generally just want to save a life and would prefer to do that rather then get a dog who will already go to a good home of a breeder's choice. Just because ppl buy pound dogs doesnt mean they want 'all the money in their own pockets". And some ppl just cannot afford $1500-2000 for a dog. No matter how hard some ppl work and save it is just not possible. Not all dogs sell for this much, its very possible to pick a breed within a price range one can afford! Plus slightly older pups that have been run on but not worked out for showing can sometimes be abit cheaper. For example I have a 16 week old pup here waiting for his perfect home and hes for sale for half the price of what pointer pups normally sell for and he would probably be the same price as a rescue pup, I just want to find the perfect home for him!!! ETA. I have NOT made a cent from my first litter, I had stud fee, c-section, puppy vacs and rego feeding ect and I ran two out of the seven on!
  2. I used to show pugs and would like another pug again but I will never breed them. I had a pretty bad first attempt of a litter with a pug bitch I had here which just proved what everyone had been saying to me too much heart ache in breeding pugs so I decided to focus on the Pointers. I wish to some day show a coated breed, im still not sure what but it will be for show only I do not want to breed another breed! I do not judge how many breeds other wish to show or breed thats entirely up to them.
  3. Whippet   ETA: I have considered fostering, maybe that would help me pick and also unpick certain breeds! I've told the OH who loves anything huge, that I want a Pug. Can't say he looked too impressed  He will love a pug... they are TRUELY big dogs in a little dog body! tough as nails and full of additude My girl will pull all the pointers into line when they are bad... she was very helpful when raising the babies
  4. Eventually I want a coated breed to show... but other than that I am more than happy with my pointers and maybe a pug or two on the side lines. Pointers are THE breed for me so whilst there are many breeds I fancy I know they are most likely definately not breeds I will own.
  5. They do but your order has to be over 30kgs :D Thats how I buy my food, I have a 3 month supply now AND a sexy new jacket with Royal Canin on it!
  6. Saw you in sweeps... with the cute little chow that wanted to pounce on everything? veryyyy cute! My girl baby won the baby sweeps, even with her trying to point birdies while she was ment to be stacking
  7. BIG was a scotty and a Jack got Jnr in show but thats all i cant tell you :D
  8. I feed Royal Canin but when Im having tough times I feed Bonnie working dogs... my dogs dont have quite the same muscle tone on Bonnie but they still look great!!!
  9. sorry not sure what you are asking? I don't really know actually. I've lost the train of thought sorry Ummm. I think what I'm meaning is.. Saying that people who buy from BYBs are bad owners because they don't buy a registered dog...is like saying that all registered breeders are good breeders. Reading what I just wrote though, I don't think that really works in this thread But no one is saying that people who buy from BYBers are bad. Personally I think people who by from BYBers or puppy farms usually just havent done enough research and probably dont realise how great it can be buying from a good registered breeder. I know of people who have known better and still bought a puppy farmed dog or BYB dog and those people do annoy me!
  10. And then we have the issue of, how many dogs in pounds ARE from registered breeders? Not as many as their are mutts/crossbreeds/ byb pure breeds thats for sure. Kinda annoys me that we should breed for demand only but BYBers and Puppy farmers can breed unethically when every they like and get away with it.
  11. I guess I should be there too if everyone else is :-p Shall be there with two bad babies and one big bad Konrad!
  12. I am all for registered breeders advertising anywhere that backyard breeders and puppy farmers do. Some beleive we shouldnt because we are "better than that" or because it makes us look like one of them. But I beleive in giving new owners options, how are non dog savy people ment to know about breeders if we arnt out their advertising? I dont get the breeders should only breed to meet demand or only breed when they have X ammount of people on the waiting list. I recently had my first litter and didnt have trouble homing any of them and Pointers arnt a popular breed, i had no one on a waiting list. At the moment there are far more litters of Pointers than when I had my litter advertised , it will be interesting to see how all these people do homing their dogs! pointers are an under-rated breed thou it would be nice to see their popularity go up. Also I advertised everywhere I could think of... oddly enough all my pups were sold via DOL I did have calls and email from the trading post and newcastle hearld, one of which is now on my waiting list.
  13. A friend and I were discussing this recently. Missing teeth in most breeds would surely be frowned upon but how many times do judges check a dogs FULL bite, 95% of the time they check the front and thats it, a dog could have 6 teeth mising up the sides and still win because of this. Im my breed a scissor bite is whats asked for in the standard, I would think a pointer with missing teeth and bad bite (under shot or over shot ect) would be quite an issue especially out in the feild. Personally I wouldnt show a dog with missing teeth, unless the teeth went missing due to an accident and I had the documentaion to back that up if a judge asked, and even then the dog would have to be amazing in every other way for me to bother. A judge has to take everything into consideration when judging, if in the breed standard it had a certain type of mouth as a disqualifying fault then that dog should be asked to leave the ring... if that dog is the only one of its breed no challange should be awarded. If if say two Aussies were in the ring and one had a perfect scissor bite and the other a level bite (scissor being the prefered in the breed, correct me if im wrong) I'd like to think that the judge wouldnt base his or her choice soley on that I'd like to think they would then take eveything else about those two dogs into account, its easy for a dog to have a good bite but not be of any actual quality.
  14. Wish I hadnt watched that! Obviously it was distressing watching them attack the beagle but the officer shouldnt have gone in there with just a gun there are far better ways to deal with dangerous dogs than THAT!
  15. Definately NOT a petit! My mum owns and shows two and they are lovely but have noisey moments and high drive! One wouldnt just follow your son around!!! Mum also has Griffons with another on the way, great dogs and would shadow your son a rough would be find if you cant be bothered hand stripping just cut the coat off. I wouldnt call them high drive at all! A pug could work, when we lived on property the family pug was a farm dog... followed my step dad everywhere, to the dam doing the mowing ect! But with any of the brachy breeds theres alot to take into consideration! Like heat ect! What about a feild spaniel a friend has one and she is just devine! She'd be a great kid dog and a great farm dog, some lines can be abit scaredy cat-ish but if you talk to the right people you'd get a great puppy! ETA. I know you said no cockers but feildies are way nicer (no offence cocker people) they are medium thou so might not work but they arnt much taller than cavs just more solid!!
