Jess you need to get him back out there and get him titled.Actually you were a topic at port mac when we were sitting around enjoying too many drinks we were like what the h*ll ever happened to jes and the BIG pug! theres a buladelah show coming up that missed the gazette its on the 20th of novemeber if you want details let me know entries have to be to Tom by the 10th thou. Also you MUST MUST MUST do the trek to morriset on the 19th and 20th of decemeber, Im thinking all us newie newbies need to have a big BBQ that saturday evening. I know last year there was a christmas concert and fire works so hoping its the same this year, Im actually going to camp mum isnt thou! -
I like the varriety of shows here in NSW. From where I live I could hit a show in any direction most weekends, and our local shows are great. I'm not sure about facilities, as I havent ventured out of NSW yet. I do love some of our country shows thou, such an awesome weekend away.

I wash the show crew when ever we have shows, so usually weekly or every second week. The pet crew get washed once a fort night or once a month depening on how busy I am.
-
I always do stand first. One of my pointers only learnt to sit at 18 months, I dont do formal obedience so have no reason to really teach it. I am copnsidering doing some obedience later on but it will never be the focus so always stand first!
-
I have the long horseleads and they were good at dog shows when we were camping I would tie one end to the trailer and let them roam abit. But now for walking and what not I have extendable leads and find them brilliant. The one I have can take up to 50kilos worth of dog.
-
That is unless you get a smart little puppy who learns how to sit by watching the other dogs and thinking if they get food for putting their butt on the ground she should do so as well. lucky she is so food oriented she will stand for food more than sit but she will sit on command as well if she thinks that is the jackpot for food. I own pugs and pointers...neither are very smart! I must say thou my newest pointer is rather smart and I have taught her more earlier because I thought she was capable of understanding when things are appopriate!

The gramma ain't great but where have they used text speak? Other than putting U rather than you which many do around here? Anyhow, what breed are you getting kat99, might be easier for people to help if they know what you have. Also personally I dont teach sit for quite some time (atleast til after my dog has a clear understanding of what stand means and whats expected in the ring) I saw a friend make this mistake, she went all out teaching the puppy as soon as they got it and the poor puppy used to get so confused and would sit for the judge rather than stand.

Mine all bounce up and out go do their buisness as FAST as possible then are back inside for a sleep in LOL

I was always told to use something different and of higher value for training any how, is that not the way any more? (thats a genuine question I havent been to an actuakl obedience class in 2 years) I train with cheese or cut up sausage or anything other than what they normally get.
-
My dogs also get treats on walks, at shows, when training, or in kongs or just scarttered thru their crate BUT at dinner time or breaky time they get their bowl with their food. The only time i dont give them a bowl is when they have bones. I dont agree with hand feeding a dog and making a dog work overtime for every peice of food. (a simple sit stay wait for a whole bowl of food is enough I think) On the actual topic of dry most my dogs bar one will eat anything and the one who is fussy gets ever so excited over cheapo foods So i get abit sneaky with her and mix her woofy bixs chum or pal dry with her proplan truth be told thou, my guys dont get a great deal of dry...I mix it up with bones(of alll types plus gross things like liver and heart and stuff ewww), mackeral, eggs, doggy fried rice that I make that they LOOOVE they basically get abit of EVERYTHING! Stops them being fussy, most of the time!

We use mealtimes for training so he'll get some of the portions in a bowl (that he waits for) and the rest as rewards for various commands/tricks. We also use a tucker ball and muffin tins and other fun ways to get food to try to make it all more interesting. Neither dog gets fed kibble for doing nothing. It's what we did with Elbie and worked well at keeping him occupied and entertained so we're doing the same with Hoover. Brekky there's often less time so it's usually food down, wait, eat but dinner we like to use for training, especially as I work during the day so I usually only have 'dog time' before I leave for work, mealtimes and on the weekends. As to raw ... well, he'll still get bones and lamb flaps, but his diet will be mostly kibble. Elbie seems fine with it so Hoover will have to adjust, I fear. We're picking up some Royal Canin and Advance to see which he likes better. The breeder was ok with him switching to kibble as long as he still got bones. ETA: Out of interest, what problems does hand-feeding cause? The part I've bolded is just not on as far I'm concerned...do the training at another time and let the poor pup eat in peace! Why on earth are you using his meal time to train?! Just because you don't have time during the day does not mean you should use his meal time as a training tool. Dogs should be left to eat their meal in peace. Hand feeding can create fussy dogs who will not eat out a bowl etc. Put the food down, if he doesn't eat it within a reasonable time frame remove it and offer it at the next meal time. Totally agree with this. My dogs have all ways been taught to sit and wait for their food each morning or night, but that is it I dont mess with their food I just let them eat. I keep proper training completely seperate.

Hitting The Ring For The First Time

OMG neo baby...I will definately keep an eye out for you at the next lot of shows...do you normally enter sweepies? Yeah having a food driven dog makes life a lot easier! Unfortunately for us, Fable couldn't give a flying piece of fur about food which is fine for her other training, but in the ring is very limiting in how you can bait her! I have been known to bait her with a rock that she was playing with before we went in the ring Um yes we had a pug that liked to bait for leaves so mum would take a container of leaves to every show rather than treats just incase we went to a show ground that had no leaves LMAO...yes mums abit odd! -

RAin we were most likely at those shows I just havent been in here for ages. Are you entered anywhere soon? What sort of dog do you have so we can all keep an eye out! Hey pixie good to see you hitting the ring! One on one training will be good for you, its really not that hard but it does take abit of training outsiode the show ring and some dogs are naturals and some arnt...wheres your boy from? He is from Argowan at Newcastle. He's got great personality, its more a matter of calming him down around other dogs that'll be the problem. i'm nervous but excited. Ahhh i see, I have seen the Arogowan people around abit at shows, dont know them thou. A friend of ours shows borzios for someone around here so we get zoi's visiting our little gazebo area quit abit. They are such a different type of dog than I am used to but theres sumthing about them I really like. Alot of them seem to almost float around the ring! And now you are showing maybe you will end up with a show pointer eventually..if you enjoy yourself of course -

Hey Andisa.I have stackers for the pointers and find them handy I also use them for the adult pugs cause they can just fit on this set but think when I get another pug bub that I might have toinvest in a smaller set.

Im slightly in love with our trailer in fact I dont ever want to up grade...Id prefer just to extend it some how? Do know if its possible thou. Ours is made from the same stuff cool rooms are made of and its brilliant in summer its very cool and in winter it holds the warmth. A few things Id like to change that might be worth thinking about. Id like the wire inside that devides the trailer into 4 berths to be able to open and shut so i could be a 2, 3 or 4 berth. We are putting roof racks on soon to hold gazebos and trolleys and stuff. We also have a BIG tack box up front that holds a spare gazebo and our chairs ect. One thing we looked for in a trailer when we bought one was one with the tyre mounted on the back I know it sounds silly but i guess if someone runs up our bums they are gona hit the tyre and not slam straight into the dogs!
