Good morning everyone, I am interested in knowing if anyone here has had their dogs anal glands removed,? and if yes, Has it made your dog more comfortable?, did the operation go well,? I have heard that the operation can sometimes have some short term damage to nerves etc around the area and the dog may have incontinence problems for a short time after, and rarely sometimes for the rest of the dogs life. Some Danes are slow to mature, and once they hit around the 3 year mark they can then start to fill out, I know a few Dane owners that have had a hard job putting weight on their Danes, and have had alot of luck by adding raw hamburger mince to their kibble, (I know some people dont like to add raw to kibble,)but just as good and even tastier is to fry it up a little and then pour the mince aswell as the juice over his kibble, I luckily have never had any problem keeping weight on our Dane, he is the biggest guts out, I cant even have our fruit bowl sitting out on the bench , otherwise he will just sit there staring at the fruit all day leaving big puddles of drool all over the floor(his favoutite at the moment are Bobby bananas) But I also increased Jonahs protein level when he hit 1 year, not too much though , If you do a search for Satin Balls on the net, it will bring up a recipe that is a sure winner for putting weight on Danes, its better known as Doggy Crack Susan

Hi Raine Congratulations on your new addition, As Bubba is a giant breed, care must be taken not to over feed or over supplement him, Too rapid growth or excess weight can cause stress on young still growing joints and cause or exacerbate problems in the elbows or hips, Just let him grow nice and slowly, Our Dane is also a giant breed and his breeder was very clear on what to feed him, he was only ever fed an adult kibble with a protien level no higher than 23 % He has some variety added to his kibble of an evening, veges, or sardines, abit of scrambled egg, liver once a week, He loves fruit, like watermellon, bananas, apples pears, Just monitor Bubbas weight closely to make sure he is not getting to plump, If I remember right I think Saints continue to mature and grow for the first 3 years, He sounds like a real cutie, Have fun with him, with these giant breeds they dont stay small for long, Susan

I saw your Staffy run, (Booker T is his name inst it) , he ran very well considering the length of the grass, aswell as being so hot, Congratulations on making Field Champion, Bree lost the lure in the grass, and was hopping all over the place like a rabbit trying to find it again, she had fun though, But the little buggar decided to run around the catching pen at the end and had me and Craig out there trying to catch her afterwards, she hasnt tryed that stunt for a long time, the little devil, I am not entering Bree for the summer cup, I am going to give her a break over the summer, but we will be popping along over the next few months to help out, I might not be there on the 5th as I might have to go back to NZ for a week or so, Good Luck everyone, Susan,

When we got our Dane puppy we were given strict instructions by the breeder on the feeding requirements of a giant breed puppy, A low protein diet was a must when growing,and to keep them lean, so as not to cause to much stress on those young growing bones, It sounds like your vet is on the right track, and has a good knowledge of large , giant breeds, Just keep your puppy lean, and no forced excercise while young and your pup should grow up strong and sound, What breed is he ?? LOL, I do that weekly aswell, Jonah our Dane has never liked roo meat, to me it seems quite rich, I also add cooked liver and kidney to their meals a couple of times a week, Even my cats come running when they smell the liver cooking, Susan
