  1. Hey Kirislin, hope you're feeling a bit better - it's awful seeing them fight isn't it. Thanks for the tip on hot/sweet drink Pers - that's something I've never thought of before. Mine are usually so good together, but just occasionally there's a bit of a tiff. 99% of the time it involves lots of noise and raised hackles, but no real damage done. Then there is the 1% that scares the crap out of you. I've got 2 (separated) hairies at the moment, both feeling a little sore & sorry for themselves. I hope your two are just bruised & no major damage is done. Bugger the rescue remedy for the dogs - take it yourself ! Or a stiff drink as tlc said
  2. Sorry to hear your going through this CGF - sounds like a frustrating time. I have no experience with Shiba's, and sorry but I don't know the background of your hairies, but there are a few things you mentioned that sound familiar. I have a Belgian Shepherd that was originally a foster - and a pretty mistreated one too. He's now very comfortable in his home here with me, but if he gets majorly stressed he exhibits a lot of the traits that you have mentioned Loki showing, particularly: - excessive coat loss - apathy while out walking. He gets excited at the prospect, but once out & in the park he'll just lie down in one spot - dull & ratty looking coat - sleeping more than usual While he doesn't have the escape issues, I've noticed my girl also has a particular fascination with his ears, eyes & bits, which she only does when he shows these signs of stress. Do you think it's a stress thing? I can say with my boy that trying to crate train him only made the situation worse, but he's the kind of dog that needs to be near me and is an indoor dog, so crate training took that away and only increased his stress levels. Maybe letting Loki in at night might help? Sorry I really can't help with the professional training stuff, just my thoughts having a hairy who seems to go through something similar. Good luck & I hope you get some resolution - the trying to get out sounds really scary.
  3. hahahahaha.... but feeling your pain. I find that the big(ger) dogs generally have pretty good spatial recognition. 99% of the time tey can get the zoomies on with a heap of others and go hell for leather (where did that saying come from) without any problems... The issue is the 1% when the brain / paw coordination goes out the window. That 1% can account for enough pins & rods to set off the metal detectors at airports, (hell you could probably rebuild Sydney Harbour Bridge), chronic back & neck pain to endure for the rest of your life, and a permanent fear that leaves you standing in the middle of a crowd, ramming your hand in your pocket looking for treats to calm the madding crowd, and then then realising that doesn't work, waving your arms in the air and hoping like hell a rogue rescue helicopter is going to drop a life-line ladder just in front of your grasping fingertips ... What forum am I on again? Ah yes, spatial recognisance is as rare as a decent James Bond....
  4. Wonderful thread After I got my own house (and put up fencing) I started the search through petrescue and other rescue sites. I was only ever going to get a pound pooch. I'd been looking for a few months, and while it was heartbreaking seeing all the unloved hairies, none of them really stood out to me. I eventually went to the RSPCA website and saw Tess' photo and just knew she was the one. Raced out there the next day and met her and it was love at first site. She came from country NSW, shipped down to Sydney (they knew they'd never rehome her where she was), and had been there for three months. She came home with me the week later and is my heart dog. Fleming is mine through default I was fostering and Fleming was my third or fourth foster. He was a wreck - physically & emotionally. He had a very badly damaged hind leg which we ended up amputating, he was underweight, and had bits out of him everywhere. It took 12 months to get even a flash of personality out of him, and during this time there was not one call or email from anyone interested in meeting him. The rescue group I was with unfortunately closed down, so I signed the paperwork and Fleming officially became mine. Now nearly 3 years later he is a bundle of joy & personality, a happy boy who loves everyone and is an absolute delight. I'm so glad no-one wanted him
  5. Wow, you got some corkers ! I love the first two coz they capture his boofy personality, and that 3rd one is just such a superb photo. He was soooo exhausted the next day, all he did was lay around and fart !!! I went shopping for a gas mask Thank you sooooo much for taking such wonderful pics of the boy, I'm sure that openarms will love them.
  6. Why do you need to tie her up? I'd be looking at solutions to make her feel safe & comfortable with you first.
  7. Julie I can take the boy. Have PM'd you....
  8. I'm going Easter Monday. Amstaffs, Belgians, Cockers, Newfies & St Barnards. If I can I'd love to go when the Best Of are being judged - that way I get to see everything !
  9. Tess is a 48kg Wolfie x Mastiff. It costs me $80 at the vet for an annual check up including C5 vac. She gets 2 cups of Optimum kibble a day which costs about $20 a week. She also gets chicken necks, sardines, chicken mince & veggies, and a bone, so add about another $20 a week for that. As someone mentioned already, it's the vet costs that can add up - the bigger the dog the more expensive things are. It's the incidentals that add up though - mind you these would probably cost the same regardless of the size of the dog. I take mine twice weekly in the car to a big off-leash park, so that's about $20 in petrol that I wouldn't spend if I didn't have them. Squeaky toys - $5 a week. Treats. Xmas presents. I have to say though, I don't care how much they cost me. My life is so much better & happier for having them in it
  10. [quote Surprised the cop didn't issue him a ticket for offensive stink. Hilarious !!!
  11. Thanks everyone for your comments. He hasn't been around week-killer or been in a situation to get bitten by anything, it's not a tooth problem, and while they did think it could be an immune thing that doesn't explain the temperature. Ultrasound & X-rays are clear (apart from slight arthritis but that wouldn't cause the symptoms), so the vet is talking about doing a lymph gland biopsy. We really don't think it's cancer as that doesn't explain the fever either. Stumped all round ! It's so sad, this dog is normally a lunatic - constant energy, doesn't stop, happy to see everyone, and now he just puts himself to bed
  12. My mum's dog is really not well. He's been to the vet numerous times, had heaps of tests done, but they really don't know what it is. It started Xmas day when he had a swollen jaw, which improved with anti-inflamatories & antio-biotics, but now he has a pile of other symptoms, which are: Temp over 40 degrees (has been for over 3 weeks) Diminished appetite General lethargy White cells & red cells are both down Platelets are "odd shaped" Lymph nodes are swollen (and have been for several weeks) Kidney & liver functions are fine Fine needle aspiration shows he's fighting an infection somewhere He's been on antiobiotics & metacam since Xmas (various dosages, various types) with no improvement. The next step is MRI & CAT scans. Has anyone had anything remotely similar? Any ideas on what it could be? Oh, and doggy is an 8yr old male (desexed) staffy x whippet x basenji (ex pound pooch). Any advice appreciated
  13. Oh that is so sad, what an horrific ordeal you've all been through only for this. RIP Reg. Big hugs to you Indigirl.
  14. Well, Tess is just perfect !! Seriously, she has no problems at all except for barking at small yappy fluffy things that have the audacity to walk past her front door. I have no issue with that !! Fleming is 99.9% perfect. The only problem I have with him is if he sees a cat then it's shoulder dislocation time (mine, not his). I don't think that any self-respecting dog could walk past a cat without wanting to chase it so agin, not an issue. I am such a proud mum

  17. The SPOT programme is run by welfare groups etc, while this tender is actually being done under the NSW Govt. Nice to see that at least they're doing something
  18. The NSW Dept of Premier & Cabinet has advertised an open tender: Division of Local government - NSW government Companion Animals education Program The Division of Local government, Department of Premier and Cabinet, is seeking tenders from suitable education program providers to deliver a Companion Animals education Program in NSW schools for Kindergarten to Year 2 children. The program must be available across all areas of NSW and focus on the following key messages: - How to act safely around dogs - The role of pets in the community - The importance of being a responsible pet owner If anyone wants any info let me know & I'll pass the details on.
  19. Shit Dis - you must have been scared out of your mind. Glad to hear the little fella is feelng better. Hope Snot is feeling a lot better soon, and that detox isn't too harsh.
  20. Glad to hear the boofhead is feeling better. Sorry to hear you're not so good. Hope you're feeling better soon Trish
  21. LOL - thanks Elfin - I find the Shiraz variety works well on a number of occasions
  22. Thanks for the links. Unfortunately my antihistos are prescription only so not on the list but I'll keep it on hand (and a low dose in stock)
  23. Unfortunately no allergy stuff here (unless it's human grade !!). He seems a lot happier already - he's lying on the floor without scratching and seems a bit more alert which is good. I'll make sure I get some kind of allergy spray from the vet to have on hand. Camomile tea bags are soaking & cooling now.....if the tea bags don't soothe him at least the tea will help me stress less !! Thanks for the advice
