  1. Sounds like fun. You should try this one Nat - hell I'm going to try it myself with the next looker that knocks on my door even if my boy isn't the jealous type
  2. No way. (stuffing my fingers in my ears) Not listening. Isn't going to happen. You must have been mistaken.
  3. I've got two dogs and two foster bitches at the moment and the pack is beautifully structured . The dogs just naturally fell into place according to size ranging from great dane down to staffyx. I'm pack leader and OH is the pack mascot. They all love him very much but won't do anything he says. If mounting ever happens, it get stops quickly enough with a loud 'Oi!'
  4. One of mine is around 18 months. He seemed to go through his trying time around the 8 to 12 month stage. Instant selective deafness. He was a perfect obedient non destructive puppy before that - then he was a little horror - and now he's marvellous and no trouble again. I didn't worry about it too much at the time - just figured he'd grow out of it.
  5. With my clogged up rotti, I was advised by several people to leave her a few more days to see if she went. Being a worrier and a glass half empty type, I took her in anyway. The vet felt her abdomen and found an obstruction I had missed. It turns out she must have found some old bones and scoffed the lot. All the stuff I tried like enemas paraffin and watered down Pal was having no effect as the bone fragments had well and truly wedged themselves there. She had to be knocked out by the vet, given another enema, and bones manually removed from the rectum. Luckily the obstruction was right at the end. If it had been higher up, it could have meant surgery and possible ongoing complications. I'm not saying this is the case with your girl but just thought you ought to know what can happen. The rotti otherwise looked fine the whole time. She was happy and hadn't lost her appetite.
  6. The price sounds about right to me everything costs more with danes.. Just make sure you are confident the vet knows danes. I'd say make a decision based on the vet not the price. I think I'm destined never to go on holiday again as I don't think my dane would cope well with a kennel situation. I think I'll have to stick to longweekends at dogfriendly B&Bs. Don't think I could part with my boy very long at all.
  7. You could try her on puppy Giant breed food. Royal Canin is very good and the dogs love it. This is really intended to slow the growth as the giant breeds are particularly at risk.
  8. Probably too late to help - but for my recently constipated rottweiler, the vet prescribed Actilax (normal human laxative you can get at the chemist). The dose is 15 mls twice daily for around three or four days. You can syringe it carefully into her mouth. It is a bit stronger than the paraffin oil but does the same job. I've also been feeding her lots of tuna, sardines and vegetables to help and including liquid in the meal at all times to help it pass through easily. I also gave her an enema - microlax. She was not impressed.
  9. The owner is pretty isolated where she is and I'm not in a position to have the time to help her getting to Steve as Ilive at Seven Hills. I am hoping that meeting Steve will give her the incentive to con someone into taking her to him in the future. She has already booked Dogtech to come out to her on Tuesday but who knows, maybe Steve will talk her out of it. I will be going out there Saturday to give her some moral support and the benefit of my limited experience but for K9 Force this is really above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks again Steve!
  10. Thanks Tarope. The owner rang today and hasn't organised anything through Dogtech yet. I have given her what seems to be the general opinion of this forum and have given her Evelyn's number. I have also suggested she contacts Steve at K9 force to get a quote or at least get a referral. Fingers crossed something will turn up.
  11. Just have to clarufy - the dog isn't aggressive. She is lunging at and will respond to another dog barking at her through a fence. But most of the time she is lunging and barking because she wants to play with the other dog. However this will look pretty scary to anyone who doesn't know the dog.
  12. The owner is exercising the dog every day. But I really think it would take more than this to wear the dog out. The dog was estimated by a vet and the pound as being between two and four years old (I'm no good at estimating ages myself. However the new owners vet believes her to be between a year and two years old. Will talk to her about the crate idea. And reading back - the word 'assessment' makes me sound like some sort of behavioural expert myself which I assure you I am not. I have dealt with aggressive and fear aggressive dogs but I just learn to deal with whatever problems I come across with a particular dog and I haven't come across these before. All I can help her with is the lunging whilst walking. I just want to get a better picture of the two of them together to see if there are any dominance issues and see what the owner's body language is like in these situations. Beyond that I don't really have much of a clue what to do.
  13. Thank you. I will call Evelyn and maybe she can recommend someone. The foster dog lives in the blue mountains so way too far for her to travel. The foster dog is absolutely brilliant. A totally loyal and devoted sort. Also highly trainable. She sit and drops before the words are even out of your mouth. She was also one of my favourite fosters so I really want to give her all the help I can. Reading the posts regarding dogtech, all my suspicions have been confirmed. I'm sure there are some good trainers in the organisation but there is no way of telling what you will get unless you know someone in the area who has already used them. I will hopefully be able to get up to the blue mountains next saturday to assess the situation myself so if anyone has any tips, please let me know. The dog wasn't acting this way when she was at my place though she was obviously a high energy high drive dog. But then I also have high colourbond fences and she had several other dogs to play with as well as someone at home most of the time. Also if anyone knows of anyone in the blue mountains area who is good and will go to a persons place for training I would recommend them to the owner. She is happy to be guided by a recommendation but she doesn't know of anyone except dogtech.
  14. First have to say that Steve at K9 force is great. Would really recommend you try his methods. Prong collar has worked for my boy. Where are you located in Sydney? Maybe there is a Doler living close by who could help by socialising your dog with theirs.
  15. Oh god. I'm going to be busy today. Thanks for that Ernie
  16. Hi Guys. The owner of one of my ex fosters has recently been having some real issues with her adopted baby, a very strong and lively rottweilerx girl. She is becoming unmanageable and something needs to be done. The dog is very strong and athletic and also very high drive and excitable. She is also highly intelligent. She is uncontrollable on walks. Excitable and will lunge at other dogs though she is not at all aggressive and just wants to play. I think I have this part of the situation under control and am working with them using a prong collar. However there are other issues involved. Mainly that the dog is highly escitable in most situations. This results in frantic barking at the window whenever people or dogs pass by. She has destroyed the fly screens. The property also has chain fences and she is barking at the neighbours on all sides. The neighbours are terrified of her particularly as they have kids and they are basically fearful of rottweilers. She is kept indoors when her owner is out due to her frantic barking at things though she still barks inside. Eventually she is going to have some serious complaints made and already she is at her wits end although she loves her dog to bits and doesn't want to return her. She is even going to move to a more suitable rental property with solid fences for the sake of her dog's wellbeing. She is going to call in Dogtech to try to get some solutions. I wondered if anyone knows anything about them. Are they any good? Unfortunately she doesn't have a car and not a lot of money so she really won't be able to afford for K9 Force to come out to her. If anyone has any tips or suggestions I will pass them on. This is a wonderful home for this particular dog and the owner is devoted to her and prepared to put the work in so I really want to try and help in any way I can to keep these two together.
  17. Good question O-ren. Could do with an outing.
  18. I'm mixed up with my dates again. Is it on this Saturday (today)? Anyway, with nothing much to do, this morning, I'll probably head up that way at around 10 anyway. Will be taking Ziggy - tall white with brown markings Danex foster. So if anyone is there, please come and say hi.
  19. I try and train each foster dog to eat in the same room with the other dogs and not touch their bowls. Usually around 4 or 5 days after they arrive they're no longer as possessive over their food. It usually though - not always - is successful. I've never had a problem with training puppies though. I would persevere with that one as you will be nipping future problems in the bud.
  20. Yes, mine have it on top of royal canin dry food. I've checked with a couple of vets that it was ok to feed this often but they seemed to think it was fine. One dog had arthritis, one dog has hip dysplacia and I figure my dane needs all the joint support he can get.
  21. With my large dogs they get a tin of sardines in with their food daily. With my last old boy who had severe arthritis, he had a tin daily as well as fish oil and all the other anti inflammatory supplements as well as prescription drugs.
  22. I prefer it to the other brands I've tried. The dogs do too. Seems to work wonders with the coats. the pound rescues are actually gleaming within a day.
  23. I read this as meaning White Shepherd and friend went to a 'breeder' but didn't buy a pup. The breeder is the one with the sick pup. I wonder how long before the rest of the pups are ill. Any bright ideas on how to shut these people down? Will RSPCA or Animal Welfare do anything if contacted? Have pmd you White Shep
  24. Its the end of the month this weekend and the beginning of the month. So is the meet this weekend or the Saturday after? Xander is due a romp with some friends!
