  1. I had to work today, so I haven't been able to visit, they close at 1pm. Vet will ring me later today/tonight....hoping like crazy things have started to pick up. No heartworm meds here, we don't need it here. No vaccs since 16 week vac over 12 months ago, no medications at all. The blood tests that were sent away came back saying primary. Hi berty, so sorry to hear you lost your bitch, so, so sad for everyone involved I will read your thread later tonight My vets are pretty switched on, they have told me lots, including just how difficult a disease it can be to treat. They are watching him very carefully. The vet I spoke to last night said she could see new red blood cells so he is making some after the transfusion. All we need to see now are some platelets, hope that is the news I receive later and I will be very very happy. A question I have for you guys is.......... when Jordy comes home, does he have to be kept quiet, restricted excercise, can he run outside with the other dogs...there are 5 but they all sleep inside, will it be all too much for him the argy bargy of 5 other dogs? do you think he will need to be kept away from them. He obviously won't have much energy or enthusiasm, will he need to sleep a lot? Will I be able to go to work and leave him? I know a lot will depend on how quickly he starts and maintains recovery, so silly questions really, but I don't know what to expect. Will come back after the vet rings me, hope its not as late as it was last night
  2. I expect this was the PCV or packed cell volume - this is the % of the blood that is red blood cells. It should increase with a whole blood transfusion. Accurate platelet counts generally require a blood smear being sent to a pathology lab, but I will often have a look under the microscope myself (to quantify whether there are "enough", "some" or "none"). However, in a dog with ITP and anaemia there is a balance between limiting the number of time that venepuncture is performed in a day, and getting enough information. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me. I can't give specific advice about management but I'm more than happy to explain things if you have queries. thanks Rappie made need to one day the vet rang me tonight quite late. She said his red count has gone from 18 to 25..... nothing to make me excited. She can't see any platelets looking herself. He is on cortisone and Imuran, he is on a drip again to have an iv open, and he is stable......sort of in limbo....waiting for these drugs to take effect. Hoping he starts to turn the corner soon......
  3. I've just got home from seeing him, he is very weak and looks pretty awful, but ate 1/2 a bbq chook for me, he won't eat for them. I still haven't been able to speak with the vet , they are having a really busy day apparently, my hubby went in to see him just after 9 am and they could not let him visit as they were too busy. Anyway two assistants have told me his pvc levels are up .........I don't know what that means? platelets or red blood cells?/ no matter up is good The vet is ringing me later to bring me up to date so I will pass on what she tells me. Hoping this is the start of good things. Poor little boy, we had lots of kisses and cuddles but after 10 mins he had to lay down, and he new he wasn't coming home, he just couldn't get up when I went towards the door, doesn't it just break your heart :p
  4. vet has also started him on another med but didn't tell me the name, as she said she can always stop it but atm Jordy needs all the help he can get. No all our vets here go home for the night unfortunately. She started the transfusion and the on duty vet will go and check and finish it and then he is on his own all night. Because his red levels were dropping so low he couldn't have been left all night without a transfusion. Lets hope he starts to improve tomorrow after the transfusion and extra meds. I will know more when I ring in the morning..... hoping its good news
  5. Thanks FD I was feeling so down, you have perked me up a bit, hopefully the transfusion will be the start of recovery
  6. is he like it when he's playing? relaxing? or is this only happening when you are training him? if he is like it all the time he needs to be looked at, x-rays would be a good idea
  7. Just a quick update on my Jordy. Unfortunately his red cell count has gone very low and as well still no platelets visible, he is having a blood transfusion now, hopefully that will give him a boost, fingers crossed for my boy
  8. Jordy's vet is not there today and we have another one who will be looking after him, I'm sure she is nice but Pru was fabulous. They are waiting for all the blood test results from the mainland.......don't know where they went or why? He will have his blood tested later today to see how he is doing, he def won't be coming home today.......vet will ring as soon as blood tests come back............fingers crossed nothing nasty shows up
  9. thanks so much dyzney will have a look, thanks for being so helpful everyone, waiting on the vet to call
  10. Spontaneous bleeding can occur with a platelet count of <50 000, however we usually see it with <20 000. Whether or not to give a transfusion depends on whether they are clinical for anything other than a low platelet count. It's hard to replace enough platelets to make a difference, but certainly if the dog is anaemic as a result of bleeding (because their blood can't clot) then they should have a transfusion. ETA: External bleeding means there can also be internal bleeding, these guys need to be handled VERY gently and kept quiet. It's also not that uncommon to get an IMHA along with IMT. thanks for your input Rappie, will be gentle and quiet and hoping there is no IMHA present
  11. yes, don't know why, I will ask the vet when I speak with her again wondering if the onset was gradual over three days, and then by Wed it had hit rock bottom
  12. he will be in until they are happy with his platelet production, although she did say with him because he is pining he is better to come home sooner, because he will be happier. He had full bloods sent off to specialists on the mainland, results due tommorrow, so hopefully nothing else shows up. there is no one there overnight my husband called in to see him and was told not to let him get excited as it puts his blood pressure up, although he had no platelets he wasn't critical as your two were dyzney, very strange, and vet never mentioned internal bleeding although his whole body is covered in bruises, maybe it effects different dogs differently, and yes all reading states more common in females, just hope he has a good recovery
  13. this is really scary stuff, its certainly not going to be easy thats for sure what happened with Jordy is I let all the dogs out early Sunday morning while I had a shower to get ready for work. Husband didn't hear anything. I let them all in again and Jordy was all scared and shaky, he's normally a real livewire, I said to my husband one of the dogs has got into him he had some toothmarks on the back of his head, no blood at all, thought it was his Dad who has been a bit funny with him lately but they hadn't had a fight. Anyway I locked him in his pen as we were both working and really thought nothing more of it. Came home he was really quiet head down, but still didn't notice any blood. later I noticed small amounts and then there was quite a bit coming from his mouth, I could see he had lost two front teeth and it was just all bloody. Monday and Tuesday he was quiet sleeping a lot and still bleeding and we were concerned that it should still be bleeding so Wednesday morning when he still hadn't perked up and the bleeding was getting heavier I rang the vet. So I know I left it a long time, and I am very lucky he didn't have a huge bleed and die........I never knew anything about this disease. I think the stress of the fight with his father bought on the start of this illness. I will try and find the source but I was reading last night online and one said stress is a trigger, so will try and find it. I don't believe he had it Sunday when the fight occured and he had the teeth ripped out, because there was no blood. I really don't know enough about it so shouldn't be saying anything but it seems strange to me. There were no platelets yesterday but if there had been none on Sunday he would have been bleeding a lot, but there was no sign of blood Sunday ????? very confusing for me Jordan is on no medication whatsoever and has not been vaccinated since 16 weeks he is now 15 months
  14. so sorry to hear Diesel is not doing well, hope there is some improvement soon
  15. thanks everyone for your advice and Nekhbet for your diagram, I will pm you dyzney, I think I will need lots of help over the next 6 months or so Jordan had no platelets yesterday, he started pred today, vet rang this morning to tell me he was bleeding from everywhere and was covered in bruising. I went in to see him and he was soooo happy he was wagging the tail and ate some chicken I took, no sign of blood apart from all the dry blood stuck to every part of him, I was only there for about 15 mins but he really perked up, hope thats a good sign. Will be back in later to ask some more questions
  16. my young Vizsla is in the vet with a bad case of "immune mediated thrombocytopenia" after a scrape with another dog begun bleeding and wouldn't stop. The vet has started him on predisolone this morning, and tells me it will be at least 48 hrs before he starts making some platelets, so his blood can start clotting. She told me this morning a side effect of the predisolone will be muscle wastage, and that his head will change shape permanently, but his other muscles should restore. I know this is irrelevant as he has to have it or he will die, but has any one out there had the muscle wastage with this drug and if so how severe did it get, particularly around the head? Thanks in advance
