Not quite Onslowsmum, I'd need to get four so that I had one of every colour and that would be just too much puppy to handle I think!!! I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens with this one and then decide whether I can handle another...then another...then another ETA: Onslowsmum, how's life btw??

Your baby is gorgeous!!! I'm getting a cavvy in January and have been put on a waiting list for a blenheim girl! Now I'm wishing I had asked to be put down for a black and tan girl instead :p but I'll probably change my mind at least twice a month between now and then :D 'cause I think they're all gorgeous :D :D Edited for spelling...'cause I'm stooooopid

I have taken all of your advice into account and have just received a crate. I have decided that crate training would probably be more suitable and have made arrangements for a place in my room to ut the crate both at home and at my mum's. Thanks all for your help and advice

Thanks for the suggestion Sezy, but too costly... Paper training is an option, but I'd prefer litter training as I believe it is more portable, thus more suited to the situation

No. Only when I will be away from the house for longer than the pup can hold on or when I'm visiting my mum. When I'm at home, the pup will be taken outside often to toilet. It will be using the litter at my mum's because she has a small yard with a pool that is unfenced (still legal btw - doors automatically shut as per legislation) and although I won't just be kicking it outside and leaving it to do it's thing, I am well aware that pups can move very quickly. So this is more a precaution than anything. Also I know how to use litter and whilst I realise that the newspaper method isn't rocket science, I would prefer to use the litter. Once the pup is confident (or I am )in toileting outside, I will phase out the litter...or at least that's the plan As said before, I've been advised to avoid the clay litter as they tend to eat it, I'm just wondering what other alternatives are suitable... Thanks again

I was speaking to a breeder (not the one I'm buying form) and they suggested using the kitty litter as a training method whilst I am not at home. Also, I plan to travel on a regular basis (with pup in tow) to my mum's house and litter would be more appropriate there than going on the lawn...safety issues and cats

Help! I'm planning on litter training my poochy pal, but I'm unsure what type of litter I should be using. I've read somewhere here that I shouldn't use the clay type as the pup is likely to try to eat it Thanks in advance.

Okay, so I'm not getting my pup for a while yet, but I've already been thinking about this problem and how I can solve it... My sister had a baby and she's nearly 7 months old now so I can use her BABY MONITOR!!! It has a video attachment and can be set to be activated by sound. So kind of like a web cam, but more portable.

Large dog 2 berth crate on wheels Hope this helps...there should be more like this at the seller's store (??) Edited to add: Check the seller's store, they have large and medium sizes and they have it available through "buy it now" for a fixed price so you don't have to bid...Trust me, this option can be a little more expensive, but better for you in the long run...

I agree. They have 2 berth dog crates on wheels at the moment. i'll find the link later and post it here.

I am also a uni student. And I'm getting my first ever puppy in January. This may confuse some people (the length of time, that is) but because I cannot afford to take time out from Uni, I'm getting her at a time when I have a month off to train and accomodate her and get her used to being alone for a few hours each weekday prior to going back to Uni. So although I am young, have never owned a dog before and seem to be out of my mind I'm doing everything in my power to be responsible for this puppy and to help it and care for it at a time when it needs it most.

Wow, so you've moved to Tamworth now then?? Congrats. So the PP in Tamworth's pretty good then?? Hope you and Tilly have lots of fun.

I hope lil' Hana is ok. And I certainly hope that it's not Parvo...V Bad Anyway, best of luck and my wishes are with you both.

What about Kulglen Dream Baby...Sounds cute IMO and it will suit her no matter what you call her...but that's JMO

I agree :D I was asking a similar question a few months ago and received som great advice from other DOLers. We are getting a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup in 5 MONTHS and it will be my first pup ever... We decided to go with the cav as OH had owned one before and they're so gorgeous and are great with kids (as we too are thinking about raising a family). P.S if you want to see some of the suggestions that we received, go to the topic Help, Confused?.

How Long Between 1st Vaccination & Taking Them Out?
TessaBella replied to MrsD's topic in Puppy Chat
I was just looking at wikipedia.com and it says that canine parvo can only be spread through physical contact and in faeces. However, it can linger for more than 20 years... So for those of you who take the risk of "socialising" your puppies in areas where there are a lot of dogs (such as off-leash parks etc) that is your choice, but I wouldn't recommend it!!! -
When talking to the cav breeder that I am getting my puppy from, she said that her local vet (lives up the road) does C5 vaccs for $55 and does a discount for litters. In NSW the breeder/seller must have the dog microchipped and had it's 8-week vacc before it is sold. I also noticed that the RSPCA has cheap prices for vaccs, microchipping, desexing etc. (www.rspca.org.au) in case you were wondering, they also have reduced prices for concession card holders... Yet to talk to my local vets, however I have 2 within about 4 blocks of my house...so will probably see one of those anyway.

When To Start Training A Pup
TessaBella replied to TessaBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I've still got 6 months to go until I get her (wait-listed for a Blenheim girl) and it seems a hell of a lot longer... :D Thanks everyone for your input. Keep it coming... Any other things that you can think of that I might need suggestions on that I may have overlooked will be much appreciated also  -
When To Start Training A Pup

Wyvernblade - I thought the best type of puppy socialisation was to have him meet other people first, then dogs etc...am I right? I am so looking forward to this puppy as it is my first and I'm having trouble with how long I have to wait before I can even see him/her without even thinking about when I can take him/her home... This puppy will be the centre of attention for the first few days and then I'll slowly ease off so that I can get back to work. That's going to be hard too!! :p Thanks everyone for your help. -
When To Start Training A Pup
TessaBella replied to TessaBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Wow!! Thanks guys!! Excellent help. I've found a breeder in my area that seems to fit the criteria of a good breeder and they're only an hour away, so I don't have to worry so much about travelling 7 hours with my new baby... :p I was talking to the lady yesterday and have arranged to go visit them on Friday. They don't have any pups at the mo but their next litter is about Sep/Oct and May/June next year (prospective only). I was also wondering if anyone could tell me how to tell if they're a good breeder when I visit them...what to look for in their dogs etc... -
When To Start Training A Pup
TessaBella replied to TessaBella's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
First of all, OMG how'd you do that?? Second, I've read that Cavs shouldn't be trained using a food reward as they tend to gain weight easily (although I know you shouldn't believe all that you read ) Does anyone have any info that might help?? -
When To Start Training A Pup

Yes, pet but i would also be interested in maybe obedience and flyball or agility. Just for fun though... -
My aunt taught our kelpie mutt to catch a tennis ball and she just won't stop now... whenever you walk out the door, she gets her tennis ball...it was good for getting her to help round up sheep in the yards though... However, my smart*** cousin decided that throwing waterbombs at her and trying to get her to catch them was funny ...she tricked him though. She now waits for the ball to bounce before catching it

I was wondering if anyone could tell me when it is recommended that you start training a pup basic commands and walking on a lead etc. I'm looking at purchasing a puppy (to keep you updated, perhaps next year) probably a cavalier as it is, and has been for a while, at the top of my list. If anyone could suggest training methods that would be suitable for a cavalier, this would also be EXTREMELY helpful...

Our next door neighbour taught our dog Sassy to beg. Only took him about 4 minutes and she loves it...It really is cute.
