  1. id like to try these too hey kriste where did you get them
  2. we dont at our current club we pretty much do what we like there and noone says anything which is great but we do get a lot of yelling and corrections which i hate but the pro's of being able to trian the way i like out weigh that at least until i need to work on stays but then i wll just arrang a few trinaing get togethers with you lot your at croydon arent you its a little far for me i have been meaning to look at berwick but hubbs works most saturdays so i dont know if its worth it
  3. what annoys me is if i want to go back and reward my dog with a treat for staying its a big nono as it distracts the ohther dogs but its ok for everyone else to yank yell and even pul their dog up by the ears and that is ok and it doesnt matter if it affects my or other dogs its a two way street while epopel insist of yelling at dogs i will be very deliberate about rewarding mine with treats why should my dog be the only one that has to deal with things
  4. if your trinaing a small dog then try to find soething that has soem nutrional value as you will find that they wont need as much dinner if you are training a bit I actually just use my dogs dinner at home eagle pack and then wehn im out i use a mix of that and cool treats or four legs that way i know hes still getting something a bit healthy rather than fatty food like devon my bigger dog gets whatever is around because he will still eat his meals and not put on weight
  5. i dont do stays in classes anymore i prefer to set up with solid dogs and handlers that dont yell
  6. connor hats peopel yelling at there dogs he will get up straight away and corrections he hates that hes so soft about epoples personalites
  7. i know if the time ever comes where i start thinking about a guide dog i will be training it myself as an assistance dog much more helpful and wil teach it to guide as well I trust my own training more than anyone elses rofl
  8. proofing to me is about setting up to succeed so i start with easy things and slowly build to harder the idea being to build confidence not to have the dog break if it does then i see that as having pushd to far and take a step back to an easier option and work from there
  9. nah he was a shit when we got him he'd lived out on the streets for a while and he loved to pick a fight little sodder he was and he'd never forget if a dog picked on our bitch he'd get them sooner or later he'd just wait for an oppurtunity He was a great dog used to like climbing on the roof of the house and survey te street. Wehn i got him i was told i was mad that he was nuts and to keep him was putting people in danger i had one person show how to string him up that was the only erson he ever tried to bite then and there i knew there was noway i cld do that i wasnt strong enough and i didnt see how it would work so with the choice of putting him down or fixing him with little help we headed to the library wit the help of some amazing triners he went on to trial in ud and gain his agility dog title that was before all the new classes came about. He became a clown loved to work and once he had a job he seemed to poor all his energy into that rather than hating the world. I agree on fear aggression a lot of fear ggression goes back t being a good leader as well if your dog trusts you to do whats best it does make a huge difference i avet had much to do with fear aggressive dogs though i'd have to say to me they are the most wrrying because they seem to fly more easily than a dog that just loves to assert himself and is very confident
  10. i agree i love using food toys playing whatever it takes ai agree some classes are now to pushy to use food not everyones dog is a pig and some epople just find it too much to manage a dog a lead and a fist ful of treats i used to love my piece of hose for reward my gsp loved two hose game and it was easy to concel it on your body usually under the arm and it was cheap though hubby did keep asking why the hose seemed to get shorter now and again My current dog hasnt got the same toy drive bu its getting there food is his life and cuddles so thast what we use for rewards we also use life rewards for behaviour around the house and when we are out for things he knows well
  11. no your not crazy some dogs just love the adrenline rus i guess just like soem epople find jumping out of a perfectly good plane fun the wrold is a strange place I think you'll get there and even if you dont think of how much you have learned in the process my first dog the agro one taught me more about dogs than the rest put together lol. I like lindsay we are fortunate to have his books at the library so i didnt have to buy them but i borrow them often and i think looking at my pile of notes have pretty much wrtten the whole things out anyway lol
  12. so really the class let you down sounds like it was a purist class lol. verbal bridge clicker all the same i get old im not really a clicker trianer because i use a verbal brindge and toys and whatever else that works. I argue that i prefer a vebal brindge and of course get told yes but its not as efffective and your voice is slower yet wehn we tested it my verbal was faster than the clicker everytime i just hate have too many gadgets. sounds liek youve doen an amazing job by first dog was majorly aggressive he could do stays at a trial and even if another dog stood over him he would come to find me it took a long time to get there but no way would i ever assume he was cured like you i accepted that he could fire up not that he did but its always soemthing that sits in the back of your mind dogs are dogs even the nicest ones can be pushed to far.. i think youve done a great job with you dog and shoul be very proud
  13. You say that now you taight focus using a toy reward well that could have been done anyway the first thing we teach in class reagrdless of whether the person is using clicker or something else is focus and that focus is the foundation of all other work
  14. tradition often overides what is best even in the forces you can get high reliability using just positive in other countries service dogs are trained by many orgs using positives over traditional methods I know ive watched guide dogs in action and havent been that impressed i know my friend has one and it take a correction to get it to drop and when its here it trys to sniff around even wehn its been told to lie down ive also seen one guide dog sniffing crotches at the lights instead of paying attention many of the guide dogs i see seemt o just zone out in boredom of the work which is a shame when i compare to many of the assistance dogs trianed with positives that love to owrk ad seem so connected to their handlers
  15. same as te dog relying on food is ineffective use
  16. we see the same with the chain the og becomes so reliant on reminders that if the collar isnt on they blow them off. I find that what erny said about food is one of the biggest problems with its use it must be the motivation for doing the work it has to be the rewadr and people get this confused f used correctly you can get just as higher level of reliability as you can using other methods
  17. just remebered a good gaility on my first dog loved to tie himself up in th chute f the tunnel if it wasnt bolted tight he would dive in and somehow throw himself into the canvas so the drum moved enough to twist the chute up we'd be trying to untangle him while he was trying to tangle himself more another of his things was to run up the aframe and drop on the top of it perfectly balanced and not come down
  18. best ive see was a lab at kcc on the back ground doing ud was sent out for the box and he just kept going until we heard a splash and the ducks taking off i have a few ive mentioned before the best being in the down on signal exercise my gsp decided to try out the new trick i was teach her and covered her eyes so then she couldnt see the signal to sit sent my dog out for the retrieve and in a ring further down someone threw a new shiney yellow dumbell so my dog went and got it and his and bougt them back in a cross in his mouth i have a pic somehwre and drop on recall i said drop he dropped rolled over got up and kept coming .
  19. we use food toys pats life rewards whatever is most appropriate at the time i think life rewards are often over looked i always get my dogs to do something before being let out let in let off to run etc i
  20. we're the same feralpup our club is very easy going and we pretty much do as we please i can join in a class without question and i love that im over the bigger club politics also cosmolo if you are new to te club then they dont really know you so may feel threatened by someone coming in and having knowledge
  21. ages ago at a club i saw a handler drag a dog by the ear to a scent pile because it had got a wrong article should this be allowed because the handler feels its the best method there are times where it is good that an indtructor will step in and other times where they just want to throw their weight around
  22. its not always that easy what if the owner wanted to do something cruel or too hars then you wouldnt want them to have that freedon we actually take the chute of and get them through the drum than add a flap at the end then a short chut then the long one if they are really worry warts
  23. first dog had open withing 12 months of starting trianing we got him at 14 months from the pound second dog i think was around the same then a further six months for ud but we hardly trial we only travel a short distance or dont bother lol
