mine are hapy doign food refusal of curse it can be positvely trained its another proofing exercise no different to dropiing food on the ground and heeling over it or having some roll toys past on stays or while heeling or during a recall And yes DR is easy to trian for a retrieve nut if i trialled my sheltie in ud he would be the first dog i would do FD with instead of Dr simpy because he is happy to do food refusal but struggles with retrieves

Throwing Food Pls Explain!
wheres my rock replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
my hubbys border dosnt get food throwing either lol i use t a lot it brigs the reward alive especially when i was trianing my whippet i throw food for reward so they can chase it to set up for another rep often i'll throw it during heeling then keep moving so the dog has to find heel again or on fronts between my legs so the run through them to get it it teaches straight fronts without any fussing we play two food like two toys for fu and to warm up and teach attention to name -
Actually its the only one i use simple because i dont believe the other is a real left about turn i teah it by first luring the dog from in front past my left leg and then into hel had to explain as the dog goes past my leg i step back with the lft leg take the dog out past it then step back to the start postion and reward at heeel after half a dozen i stop stepping back and click for movement of the rear end moving around to heel ehile keeping my lure hand still for my little dogs at knee height i should video the steps for you its amazing how quickly they learn to swing their bum around this is done stationary of course then wehn i introduce it to heeling i actually stop for a left about have the dog swing into heel and then move forward slowl removing the stop my sheltie does it beautifully if i get a chance i will video on the weekend for you

food refusal is an extention of stay and i to teach my dos that focus on me gets the reward you dont get the stuff offered unless i release you and yes i do release sometimes to the bowl we also do placing food behind the dog for recalls and then send the dog back to the food food is a reward so therefore if you have trianed correctly the dog will only take the food wehn it heares a click or your verbal marker directed retrieve is easier to train for a retrieve fanatic and less chance of losing points for minor faults as you only get one glove which is why many triallers choose it over Fd speak also allows a lot of room for minor points a moved foot can cost you a point rememebr Personally i think food refusal can be positive it is for my dog because he knows that by refusing the food offered he gets it eventually anyway. Personally i teah all three behaviours food refusal retrieve glove and speak then will choose the one that the dog is most comfortable as the one i use in the ring every dog is dfferent but erny is right food refusal is refusing food offfered without any extra command so if i say stay you stay you dont gawk around you dont take treats or toys of other epopel you dont listen to other peoples cues you just watch mum and the eventually the sky will rain reward whether that be food a toy or being allowed to continue your walk depends on the situation

wheres my rock replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
a freind of mine demonstratd a perfect reason for obedience trianing the other day we were at kcc talking her dog was sniffing around the bbq's and we were on the other side of the drive way a car was coming so she just called the dogs nam and said sit which he did very promptly then once the car was gone she released him back to play so nice to have that kind of control that you dont need to panic -
way to go yeah that is so cool

Problem In Trial Ring On The Day Only
wheres my rock replied to Arya's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
there are plenty of assistance dogs trianed usinf positve only as in no leash corrections etc These dogs are consistent happy dogs keen to work for their handlers its not the methods we choose to use that are the problem its the person using them incorrectly that is Ive met so many so called positive trianers that think they are doing it right coz they shovel food into their dog like using correction there is so much more to be understood than that i wish it were that easy but it isnt timeing understanding of the way dogs tink and percieve things play a huge part in being successful not whether or not you correct you dog -

shoey wouldnt worry too much about the dogs at present their fitness is very high altready ask simone at club to show you how to take their pulse corrrectly shes a vet nurse so will be able to help you witht hat side of things if your planning a walk run trianing program try the couch to five km someone already posted the link its the one i used nice and easy and gets you going quickly im happy to go for a jog walk with you on a sunday morning around kcc park if you want before trinang i'll bring my heart rate monitor for you to borrow if you like
-
shoey have you got your bike set up properly and do you know how to use your gears correctly if not id pop into the bike shop n frankston and get the guy there to help you set it up it makes a huge differnce you'll find Pace yourself and just build up slowly also it might pay to get a wind trainer so you can use your bike stationary to help gain fitness you'll be surprised how quickly you'll get fit the whole track wont be on grass if you enter at kcc they go around the front ground as well you'll also get rest breaks if it were me i'd go slower and build your endurance keep your heart rate in your aerobic zone and you will build cardio very quickly i can lend you a heart rate monitor if you like also doing soem strength work to help build your muscles and a bit of jg walking can help you'll get there i'll do it with you if you wait till next year and i'll be running it much easier than biking rofl

we also do a lot of doodling in heeling holding position for small movements like a 360 or left turn with just a couple of steps
-
for the shoulder touch type heelng teach a shoulder target I do one step at a time if the dog cant take of paying attention and being in correct position then it aint going to last a whole runthrough
-
shoulder to my left leg with my sheltie as hes little he tends to forge a bit and be a little in front of my leg but thats ok with me UK is too crowded for my liking so uk without the dog touching you is pobbaly about where i would want my dog
-
gee thats rough most clubs except them a couple of days late

Training In Drive Vs "bred For" Instincts
wheres my rock replied to J...'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
in my experience i trained my gsp in drive and she was amazing however when we started doing retriving training and retrieving trials she became much more settled in all her other work more focussed and consistent i like to see dogs do what they were bred for within reason of course so a whippet should get to course and gundog to hunt a working dog to herd to some capacity -
Its been two years since you went away I still think of you everday You were more than just a dog , a pet You were my friend the very best I mss your snuggles Your zoomies too All i can say is I will always miss you
