reading your posts its a central asian shepherd and you plan to go to southern southern is a good club a few dolers go there you will get different responses from different epople wherever you go you should go look at a few clubs then decide how you feel Southern has some very experienced dog trianers in its wings

a few years back there was a problem wiht handlers standing outide the ring to make sure a dog stayed in trianing that person would correct the dog if it broke rather than the handler going back so it is frowned upon when someone known to the dog is standing right outside the ring

sunday will tell though the dea of a non pup does seem appealing at the moment even if she will have baggage to deal with

the dog in question is nearly four has been started in retrieving has her qc has a show champion but no obedience work cept that for retrieving i was a bit unsure about the age four is older than any dog ive had and the fact that someone else has done work with the dog and they train vey differently to me i am going to see her sunday should add the dog hasnt lived in surburbia or really ben inside she has lived in kennels with other dogs this could be a good thing then again maybe not will know more sunday

thats what im thining if the dog has high drive and strong nerves older could be better in the sense of knowing what you are getting plus no waiting to grow up

Hi guys Question if you were looking at an older dog as an obedience agility and retrieving trial prospect when you you say a dog is too old to start training and trialling would you prefer a dog to be under one under three or prefer to start with a puppy so you can lay your own foundations Im talking high performance here not just getting a cd title a dog that has the potetial to do vry well

yup and its annoying many breeds are being ruined by breders ignoring temptrement over looks i guess its easier to hide temprement in the show ring than structure you can teach a nervouse dog to tolerate being handled an aggressive dog to behae in the ring but you cant chnage cow hocks however if soeone is loking for a lifelong comapnion they could live wiht a dog with cow hocks but a dog with temprement issues often ends up put down or int he pound Fair enough environent has a part but when you start with a solid base its much easier to devlope a confident happy memeber of society

weak nerves are genetic and can seem lke anxiety a dogs sbility to cope and bounce back can also be genetic and other problems then stem from this Sadly many breeders dont really understand temprement as a a breeder what their dogs temps are like and you'll often get the response they arent aggressive or timid but these are just two small components of temprement I dont think any breed should be breed for aloofness and it should be removed from standard for dogs to fit well into society aloofness leaves to big of a gap for breeders to breed nervousness dogs and hide behind the standard all dogs should be able to tolerate being approached and touched by a person regardless of what a standard says its funny how breeders will breed other faults but hide behind the standard when it comes to poor temprement Its funny we just had this discussion about gsps and the amount of show bred dogs that arent steady under gun and have anxiety issues over excitability and aggression and which lines seem to be worse and were pinpointing certain stud dogs use over the years with crap temprement selties are another example so many are nervy dogs and the breeders acall it aloof my whippet was aloof he didnt care about other epopel and dogs but he certainly never backced away from epople or showed signs of anxiety if soemone wanted to pat him he just wasnt phased that is aloof not run and hide under th couch because soemone entered the room In my experience a lot of tempremtn issues go back to poor breeding and weak nerves sadly until breeders atrting putting more thought into what a good temprement is it will continue to be an issue Maybe we should be pushing for ability tests and temprement tests to make up champions so dogs that carry that label are sound in all manners f speaking not just pretty dogs The gsd club have soething in place and i think its a great start to making breeders look at the whole dog in europe it used to be that to make up a chamion in a gundog you needed to have a gundog title not sure what at least this showe the dog was sound under gun and could perform its job

one thing i hate at club is everyone only seems to reward when told to not when they need to exercise finished praise you dog and the dog could have done crap

thast where the clicker some in or verbal marker it gives you the oppurtunity to reward after the event but the event has been marked

a fair way i havent had an injured dogfrom it its no diffferent to the two toys the dog will still race a out and stop quickly to spin back

get a real dog get a gsp they are never dead in the water love to work and will keep you on your toes

im not that keen on tollers dont like the face lol ducks before all the toller epople beat me you should get one of your own ness

i dont throw short distances so havent really thought about it but i guss it would depend on the dog like all things

i do too even though i have used my verbal marker i always add get it dont relaly know why i did that i just do lol i think from the 2 food game because you arent marking anything

dont you love timid dogs they fall aprt at the worst times personally give me a headstrong confident brute anyday lol

retrieve and gundog go hand in hand my gsp would fetch a sausage and would fetach an egg without marking them she could also do retrieve over the jump for either retrieving was her first love even thugh she was a piglet lol after my first dog i was really into trialling and i wanted a dog that would be great at ud and be capable of high scores so i went straight to the gundog group i know bc's and gsd's do very well but that natural deisre to retrieve makes yur job so easy
