Congratulations to the connections of the Hungarian Vizsla - Zisunka Ace High - who at just 12 months and 3 days took BIG yesterday at Culcairn. He backed up today at Coolamon/Ganmain with a second BIG at 12 months and 4 days! And went on to Runner Up Best in Show! Congratulations Andrea - her first 'show dog' after several years break following handling her parent's Vizslas as a child handler.

Ditto - I wonder if the anatomical landmarks that 'scored' were consistent throughout? Certainly makes you think.... I was under the impression that you could not get two scores on any set of films, unless it was under appeal? http://www.ava.com.au/sites/default/files/documents/Other/CHEDS_manual.pdf I also wondered if the first report from Lavelle suggest that the positioning was less than good? Not commenting on this particular situation, but I guess what we really want is the 'most valid' result, rather than the most pleasing. As a friend said - 'if there is a soft reading, do we delude ourselves into thinking we have something better than it is in reality?'
-
Roger Lavelle is still an accredited reader AFAIK, but it may be that they can't be 'officially' read as the dog is less than 12 months old? It's also my understanding that the x-rays, client files, etc always remain the property of the vet practice, so maybe this is why they are refusing to give information?

Which is really a matter for AVA ethics committee surely? Hopefully, people will start to report these perceived issues formally

I keep reading this subject and wondering if there is a proliferation of these diagnoses since PennHIP has become the 'choice' for vets and as more are being confirmed as PennHIP certified? I wonder if the OP knows if the vet involved with their was a PennHIP vet? I know that a Hungarian Vizsla owner in SA was told that the breed has a high incidence of HD (NOT true - Breed average 12)and that they should desex when they PennHIP x-rayed at 16 weeks so that surgery could be done....

Congratulations to the Clarks!

Thanks, I loved this. I'm show sec for a breed club, and I usually put a quote in the catalogue about this sort of thing. A couple I like - “An important part of success in the show ring is objectivity, and it applies no less to those who show …… than it does to any other. This objectivity must be applied to evaluating one’s own dog and to judges under whom one intends to show the dog. To expect all judges to see dogs in exactly the same light and to have the same likes and dislikes is naïve. As much as some exhibitors might not want to think so, judges are human, and they all have idiosyncrasies.” Richard Beauchamp, 2006 And this - On Dog Shows “Who can use the words ‘just a dog show’ when the dog before him in the group is so superbly constructed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; here the beholder may find beauty if he wishes but he must and cannot deny the facts; the more experienced will like the pretty head, the attractive coat, the lovely colour, but he will know that that is not all by any means. The framework beneath the flowing coat or the short thick fur has to be correct and that has nothing to do with beauty but the parts of the dog put together correctly, functioning without fault.” Gay Gottlieb, The Hungarian Vizsla, 1985

Dogs NSW - Code of Ethics 4A. A Member shall not breed a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in eighteen months without the prior approval of the Board of Directors except under extenuating circumstances where application for registration of the litter may be considered by the Board of Directors. 11/08 ACTCA - Dogs ACT 4. I shall not breed from any bitch kept by me before it is twelve months of age, and thereafter not more than once in each succeeding period of twelve months. Provided however that should it be necessary, through extenuating circumstances, to breed from a bitch twice within twelve months - I shall rest the bitch on the third season.

Yep, it's my understanding that the tablets are the most up to date application - my ex vet was also a repro vet (he's moved on unfortunately) The dosage can be much more accurately calculated based on the ongoing prog levels.

I'm not sure why you have to wait till 2 years? Dogs can be assessed using the BVA/AVA scheme from 12 months AFAIK?

Hi, I find the PennHIP stuff to be a little confusing sometimes in the way it is reported. can you tell me if this percentile result is for all of the dogs of your breed submitted to PennHIP scheme internationally, or is it for the Australian population that have been submitted? Also - my understanding of PennHIP is that the really meaningful result is the Distraction Index - the measurement of hip laxity. I understand that it is this reading that indicates the future potential of the dog to develop hip dysplasia. I think it's also important to consider that the percentile result is a movable feast and in a couple of years time may a dog may no longer fall into the same percentile, depending on the dogs who've been entered since. I guess I've yet to be really convinced about any huge advantage offered by PennHIP... but still keep trying to find out more about it.

Haven't checked my notes, but (from memory) at a Pat Hastings seminar in Sydney a few years ago (not this year's seminar) she said that if the right testicle was not descended by 8 weeks it still *may* come down. However, if the left is not descended, it won't come down with time.

I know that you are still busy - just wondering if you know when the pdf with full results will go up? wooops!!! Just read the previous message - apologies.

Have you sent the same pics to your breeder with your questions? They may have some valuable input. -

I had heard that there was some criticisim on line about Ffi and her Sydney Royal photos... or the lack of them being availabe NOW! For goodness sake people, do you know how you sound? Ffi's contract is not with you - nor is her responsibility with you. I look forward to seeing great photos when the time is right to see quality, appropriately and artistically edited pics.

I live 2 hours away from Castle Hill S/G I travelled up there for classes when my puppy was young - I think that their instruction methods are brilliant and I can't think of a better club that I've ever seen... -
It's so difficult to make any kind of decision in these circumstances Danielle. I've found this table to be very helpful in quantifying things wishing you strength in a very difficult time http://www.veterinarypracticenews.com/vet-...life-scale.aspx
