  1. I would think shar pei growth may be more similar to bulldog, in that they grow very fast (similar to a large breed) and one thing I have learnt is not to feed them dry puppy formulas. I find my dogs have much better leg growth when fed adult formulas. Large breed puppy may be acceptable though. Having said that, my dogs are on a mostly raw diet with only a very little dry food each day.
  2. You can buy 1 kg packs of roast chicken meat already cut up and frozen in some supermarkets (Coles). I find this easy to leave in the freezer. When getting ready to go out I grab some and put in a zip-lock bag. It defrosts by the time I am ready to use it. I have also used cut up cheerios and dog meat rolls.
  3. I think you worry too much! Relax - he looks fabulous.
  4. Well we were making a little progress, but very slowly. However - seems it was all an act, as I took him to a show today just to socialize before the real thing and he was perfect really - just so excited to be there that he took no notice of the lead at all. Little bugger!
  5. Pei not sure where in Brisbane you are - but I get most of my dogs' raw meat and bones from www.bigdogpetfoods.com/. It would be well worth the trip on a Saturday morning to stock up for a month - if you have the freezer space. None of pups are raised specifically on puppy foods - pei do not need them and at 7mths she definately doesn't.
  6. I have a similar problem with my chi pup. I cannot get him to walk on the lead at all. He just collapses and stays there. Tried food and toys but he hates it - this is supposed to be a show dog! Does not have a problem with a collar - though I cannot find one to fit him - even the cat collar is too big - but I have let him drag a lead around and he has been fine - only when I hold the end. Help please! All my other dogs have sold their souls for food quite quickly - but this midget is tougher than all of them.
  7. None of mine wear collars at home - ruins the hair on the neck line on show dogs! Also they play rough and as a multidog household, accidents would be very likely. They are all microchipped though. I feel that with a microchip - you will always have hope that if they are lost there is a chance you will get them back, even months/years later. With a collar only - if it is removed or tags are lost - then that is it really.
  8. Personally I don't know why anyone would pay the prices of those barf patties. A huge ripoff in my opinion. The place I buy my mince and raw bones manufactures the patties and sell them for a cheaper price - but still ridiculously high for what you get.
  9. What an great site and easy to understand - thanks for posting. Will recommend to my puppy buyers.
  10. I bought one of these off ebay. It is great - cordless, small, comes will small carry bag. I also bought a rougher sanding tool to go with it from bunnings. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Dremel-Golf-Cleanin...1QQcmdZViewItem
  11. Name: Tazer Sex: Male Age: 13 weeks tomorrow Colour: sable Breed: Chihuahua Long Coat Hobbies: annoying the cat Loves: toys and people Hates: don't know yet
  12. Vet's usually instruct no food till the next day, but water available. I would not worry. Even tomorrow she may be slow to eat. I'm sure she will be fine. I think you better post some photos of her in the chi thread.
  13. He Moggy - have you seen my new baby in the chi thread? He's scrumptious!
  14. I notice you plan to have his second vaccination the day before puppy preschool. He really should have at least a week preferably 2, after his 2nd vaccination before he is socialized with other dogs. The vaccs will not be effective after only one day. On the other hand, if your friends dog is only late for its annual shot, but has had all previous puppy shots, it will not matter if it is a month late - it will still be immune. Many dog owners are now choosing not to vaccinate after the 1 year old shot, as it has been found unnecassary and more likely detrimental to continue to revaccinate a dog every year.
  15. I must say I am also surprised he was fed on the night of the operation. Your vet should have told you not to feed him till the next morning. Poor guy, no wonder he vomitted. The vomitting from yesterday probably put him off his food today also. Just make sure he has fluids available and he will eat soft food when he is ready. Boys are all big sooks too remember, so don't baby him too much. Just leave him rest. If he is not improving by tomorrow, another vet check would be a good idea.
  16. Mine are fed a raw chicken frame (or wing/necks/turkey neck/kangaroo tail etc) for breakfast given whole so they can crunch up the bones. For dinner they get raw pet mince with included crushed bone, fruit & vegies (I buy it already made up) plus about 1/2 cup quality dry food for dinner. I often change the dry food brand - but always a high quality one (eg. nutrience or pro-plan). I really dislike puppies getting wheat bix and milk. They are not people and do not need grains or milk in their diet at all.
  17. You have hives. It can happen with shar pei also. I have had shar pei for 5 years and have only had a reaction to one horsecoat pup (last year) that I bred. It settled down after a short while. I know some vets complain that they cannot touch any shar pei as they react to them. Did you have much time and actual contact with the breed before you purchased the pups? Hope it settles down for you. In the meantime it might be worth wearing a shirt with long cotton sleaves when cuddling the pups.
  18. How to dremel dogs' nails: http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/index.html I usue a dremel golf cleaning kit I bought off ebay for about $20.
  19. Sorry for you loss pomquest - you tried everything you could.
  20. I would add that if you can find a puppy that has been raised in a household with kids - and even a cat, that would be an excellent choice. Some dogs raised in nice pristine kennels may not be the best choice to join a house full of little people.
  21. I just did the eukanuba one - and all 3 breeds that I have been (or in one case, plan to be) involved in showed up. The best survey I have yet come across - and pretty good breed descriptions also. Nor is it limited to 4 responses - which is great.
  22. Oh you poor thing - how very sad. I hope your little girl pulls through. Do let us know if you find the answer. I hope someone here can help.
  23. Shar Pei (rolly dog). Great size (below knee height), easiest breed to toilet train, not usually very destructive or over active, not prone to wander or escape. Easy care, provided they are fed correctly. Robust without being over the top or pushy. Easy to train. Come in every colour of the rainbow and different coat types. An older pup or mature dog can be a fabulous choice for a busy young family. Most of the hard work is done and the pup/dog is ready to play with the kids straight away. A baby puppy is first and foremost a baby and needs careful handling and training. Having said that, shar pei puppies are often calmer and behave better than most. Biased I know
