He'd probably eat the soap anyway damn food whore!

I can hear Chill heading for the bathroom to collect the soap to wash your mouth out PAX .

Jarrah is the worst (or should that be best?) thief in the world. Doesnt matter what it is, he will steal it. Not confined to food either although he has been known to steal (& eat) corn cobs, grape stalks & the stalks of tomatoes. If he thinks it's someone elses, he'll steal it. As Dagboy said to me the other night when I was training him, he is totally driven - whatever you have, he wants. Great for training.

How Do I Make My Border Collie A Better Guard Dog?
MrsD replied to Bacchus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Whisper (BC, 7 months) will bark but at least she doesnt meet visitors at the gate with a toy in the mouth asking for a game like Jarrah (kelpieXBC) does :) . From my limited experience with BCs I agree with most of the others, pretty hopeless as "guard dogs" but they will usually bark more at strangers as they get older. Most dogs tend to go that way. -
Hi Noels , as you can see Im getting right back into training & am having a ball doing it . at your stories, especially the one about the rotty, you have to just laugh at some people . Interesting about the shepherd jumping through the guys arms, do you remember Levi (standard Poodle) & the big shepherd (can't remember it's name now, the one that could jump on the spot in front of her) from Mary Ray? Both of those can jump through their owners arms too, when you look you think "No way!!" but they manage to fit . Dagboy has earmarked that as a trick for Ebony . Looking forward to all the fun, I'll post if there are any funny ones that crop up . Hope I can catch up with you during the year - I wont be going to Mary again this year but I am planning on doing the 2 days that Steve Davies is there in July .

Im not going to get into the arguements about alpha rolling & whether his training methods are good/bad, but I did see the dane you are referring to on a subsequent show in which he referred to it (didnt see the original) & I can say that the dog showed absolutely NO signs of stress on the lino at that time (not sure exactly how long after the original episode it was).

We have no sheep at Erskine Park till the 8/3 (a week before our first trials). The Sporting Committee is takng over all Saturday training so no more BC training days which is where Colin instructs. I don't know if he will be instructing at any of the Sporting Committee days, but he is conducting training for the BC club once a month at his place till we get new sheep. Thanx Janba, I do remember now seeing something on the herding list about the sheep not being at Erskin Park.

Colin Webster takes any breed of working dog in his seminars & classes, contact someone from Erskin Park & they should be able to let you know when his next training day is. ETA - I dont think it's a matter of being excluded from herding itself, the trainer just obviously isn't comfortable with training a breed of dog that he's not familiar with. Right or wrong, breeds like BC's koolies & kelpies work in a completely different way to a breed like a shepherd & the guy just obviously doesnt train upright breeds . There was a white shepherd doing HIC (?) at Uralla recently, lovely dog with plenty of promise . Hope yours does just as well when you get to work with him .

Redlands Dog Obedience Club is currently running trick training classes on Friday nights at 7pm for all breeds of dogs. If you have never taught tricks or used a clicker etc it's no problem as we will give you the groundwork on those subjects as well as teaching tricks of varying degrees of difficulty depending on what you dog has learnt before. Classes are $5/night & if you come more than once you will need to join our club for insurance purposes, unless you are a member of another CCCQ affiliated obedience or agility club. Membership in the club is only $15/year 1st July-30th June (+ $5 joining fee the 1st year) pro-rata, so $7.50 + $5 = $12.50 if you join between now & 31st May (if you join after 31st May you get 13 months membership). Anyway if you would like to come down, the club can be found at Judy Holt Sporting Complex & Oval which is situated at the end of Bailey Rd Birkdale - drive in the driveway & the Obedience club is situated in the small shed on the left hand side on the edge of the oval. Hope to see some of you down there some time .

Thank you Arya, that's a great help! Now I just have to teach her to pick up the rope in her mouth . I think once she gets that idea the rest will come fairly easily ;) . I would love to see a video of your girl in action doing the trick, I will send you a PM. Don't laugh, but my idea for this trick is that Jonty is going to be sitting in the cart when it's pulled out "onstage" & then I want to get Jonty to lead Whisper back offstage again . Or perhaps Whisper drags it out, lets Jonty hop off & then Whisper pulls it back offstage again. Got to get one dog trained first before I try the second dog . If you have any other trick suggestions for Jonty (ie cute little dog tricks) I'd love to hear them .

Australia's First Herding Champion
MrsD replied to fidelis Border Collies's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Congratulations Tracey, I know how hard you have worked with her & in the herding world in general, you deserve it ETA - if Whisper is half as good as her mum at herding I'll be happy . -
good idea a bit like Pax's suggestion of putting the treat on the mousemat, I like it! Love the keys story . Thank you! I can only dream that Whisper is ever as clever as Jarrah, I am still astounded every day at how fast he learns things. But she is doing pretty well (I could teach Jarrah this whole trick of pulling a cart to me in less than 5 mins, but that's not the point, I want Whisper to do it )
-
LL it's likely to be later than that as herding is usually only done in the cooler months - Qld dont start their trials until mid way through April & finish them in Sept.
-
OK, I will try with the mousemat, I just did a couple of minutes of training with her & if the box (it's actually a phone book but she doesnt know that ) is within 4 feet in front of me she immediately goes to it & stands on it, further than that & she flaps around a bit so for now I will keep it close & practice more. When she stands on it I throw the food off to the side so she has to leave it & therefore has to go back to it for the next reward. How early do you put a command to something like that or the mousmat? I have her doing it on a verbal command now, as above, Im not sure if I should keep quiet but that way I guess it's more free shaping? (Can you tell I've not done much of this stuff? )
-
Laffi, what is defined as shaping? :dropjaw: Pax, I havent actually done anything with her on this exercise yet apart from trying to get her to touch the lead in my hand or retrieve the lead if I throw it. That's why I was wondering if anyone (better clicker trainers than me ) could suggest how they would train it to see if Im doing something that may work - I won't say doing it right as there are lots of "right" ways of doing things, as you know ;) . Here are the 2 things that have happened so far with the 2 small things I tried. 1. When I threw the lead 1st time I C&T on her picking it up & returning to me. Problem is the second time I threw it she just stood in front of me & when I went out to it with her to encourage her she just went all silly offering all sorts of behaviours & jumping up. I think the problem is partly that she sees a retrieve (or play like tug) AS the reward so she's basically saying " No thanks, I don't want that reward out there (that you've just thrown), I'd rather stay here with you & get a food reward" ;) . 2. When I try to get her to touch the lead in my hand she targets my hand, so she doesnt understand that she's to target the lead. And if I put it on the floor she ignores it (see above ;) ). As far as I have 2 options to do the trick I want as the end result & they are to have a piece of rope on the toy which she can then pull on or get her to push it with her nose. I guess what I am really asking others ideas on on a basic level is firstly how to get her to target another object (ie not part of my body) & how to transfer that to retrieving it. Or is retrieving a lead or similar not similar enough to pulling a cart along for her to grasp the change later on? I thought I would try with the lead first as to finish the trick I am going to have to teach Jonty to lead another dog (Whisper if I can get her to do this) along by their lead so I thought I would start with the first part. (Am I making any sense what-so-ever? :p ) Im not exactly sure what a target plate is, but I have just started teaching her to put her front feet on a phone book or small box, is that what you mean? We've only done it twice so far & she's picked it up fairly well. If it gives any indictation Dagboy was sitting next to me on the lounge last night when I was training her & his comment was "She's very clever - b*tch" - Im still trying to work out if he means her or me :o .
-
Im looking for ideas on how to train a dog to pull a small toy (like a childs toy cart or pram) to me. As a bit of background Whisper is 7 months old (almost ), very food motivated & have been doing clicker training with her. She is also quite a good retriever, but most of the time, at least, likes to have the article moving before she brings it back, but isnt fussy on what she retrieves (will retrieve a ball, frisbee, lead etc). She also loves tugging, but food drive tends to over ride all of that & when I tried to click & treat for her retrieving her lead for example she did it the first time until she realised I had food & then didnt want to leave me to go & get it :D . I think she saw it as "Ohh mum threw something for me, I know that's fun but I think I will hang around here & wait for a trick command so I can get food". So she didnt work out (not surprising, it was only once!) that the retrieve was the "trick" I wanted her to perform, the retrieve was simply a distraction to her (which she ignored extremely well ). Anyway I'd like ideas on how to train it, as I want different ideas. I know CTD trained her dog to do it, but as she said all she had to do was look at something & Moses would bring it to her & Whisper isnt like that yet! Jarrah is much more like that but I'd like to teach Whisper as I want to perform it as a part of a demo routine in which Jarrah will already have a big part & I want Whisper to be in it too . ETA - she has learnt to target the back of my hand with her nose (command = touch) & does so very reliably & targets my hands with her paws (command = paw) but if I ask her to touch anything else she gets very confused & tries the nose/hand & hand/paw thing.

Beginners Herding For City Dogs In Brisbane
MrsD replied to Kall01's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I can second this. Tracey is really good and Colin has a wealth of experience and they really do work WITH you and your dogs to get a great result. I did the last workshop with Colin and it was a really worth while weekend. ETA: Eric at the Mt Gravatt show grounds is really good as well, he does have a different method to Colin which is a little harder on the dogs physically (NOT cruel or harsh) and has similar thoughts, but it just depends on how you want to work your dogs. My boy responded really well to Colin, whereas my girl is probably better suited with Erics methods as she is a little hard headed. Duh, I've just worked out who you are Tony . BTW, I agree with everyone about Colins seminar, it would be a great way to start! -
I was sooooo excited the other day because I was throwing the disc for Whisper & Jonty raced over to it & grabbed at it in the air & tried to catch it!!! :p :p Only problem is that Whisper came along & said "That's MY disc!!" & grabbed it off him & Jonty hasn't tried again since

Bridgie Cat & PAX - good point :D :D .

I taught Jarrah to cast in a smallish paddock (60mx30m?) using a tennis ball, but I dont think it would work with many other dogs . LL - not in either ANKC or 3 sheep, the sheep are always in sight although various distances away depending on the level & dicipline. ETA - bret, if you can't get to classes more often why don't you ask Eric if he has any ideas for you on what you should be working on & how to do it without sheep? :D
