  1. Would you like to try taking some treats with you and getting his attention on you (through the treats to start with) so that other things are ignored? Getting him to focus on you. Look up the Triangle of Temptation (TOT) thread.
  2. Dynamic lifter tends to lose its attraction once wet - we either wet it straight away - doesn't take much for it to get soft and thus much harder for the dogs to eat - or throw it around just before rain. Dynamic Lifter Extra is a variety with other things added, which could make it a more potent mix than the standard variety.
  3. My dog gets to mince her own bones, Shoey. But she does have good teeth. :D
  4. Mine has no meat mixed in. That makes it a bit more sloppy, but easier to put into containers, defrost and serve. I take one out of the freezer the day before I need it and put it in the fridge section. The first is a bit frozen, but not hard to get out. If I feel sorry for the doggy, I will put it in the Microwave on med/low for a minute or two. Otherwise it just goes out as is. By the third day, it is well and truly de-frosted (as I give her 1/3 per day). Then we start on the next one.
  5. Interesting subject! I thought I was alone with the original sook. I hope this is not a hijack - rather an extension of the subject ......................... My Dobe has this thing about stuff - it's ok 'til it "bites" her, the I've no chance of getting her back to it. An example - I had a hoop that she was jumping through for me. All went well for a while and she was going through it fine, gardually getting a bit higher - nothing she could not handle. Then, one day, she misjudged, and caught a back leg as she went through. It didn't hurt her as I let go of the hoop. I don't think it should have been a problem. But, from that day on, she would not go anywhere near it - even if it was resting on a wall in the house, she would give it wide berth, or refuse to go past it. I left it around for ages hoping she would get over it and eventually gave up! This has happened with other things as well. Any ides?
  6. For our Dobe, a month is only ten containers. I fill the sink - makes about 6 weeks supply at a time. The containers come in lots of 5 for about $2.50 per pack. Can use them many times. Chinese containers come free.
  7. Get yourself a good dose of sinus :D Fixes my smell real good. No, seriously, I don't put meat in it - she gets her meat at night in the form of meaty bones. Used to put kidney or liver in, but have decided it's easier just to freeze a few chunks of those with the bones. If I'm putting sardines in, they are the last thing added. Also, I use 600ml take-away containers from the bits & pieces store. One container does my Dobe three mornings and are re-usable - most of the time. But she gets her toast as well. :D
  8. TM - (TB) - Sounds like there is a good chance that Kaos will return to "normal" when the surroundings (including you) return to normal. There has been a lot of change/disruption to the routine etc. and a lot of stress that dogs do pick up on. That sort of thing happens - and you cannot stop being stressed - just having limited mobility alone is a stressor for any human - it's normal. I do hope, that after a while, it gradually sorts itself out. Your strategey sounds logical to me, for what it's worth!. We took Kaisie to the vet this morning - and there was a big, fluffy toy dog in a display they had in the middle of the reception area. It took a good 5 minutes for her to suss, sniff, jump back a few times and generally get the idea that this thing was not a threat! She's 4 years old! We finally got her on the scales no problem, then came back past the display and she freaked at a blow-up crab that was hanging there - hadn't seen it earlier because she was so worried about the doggy. :p
  9. Nah - wouldn't worry about it. Just shake the pack so any odd stuff settles to the bottom and don't feed the last bits. Put it into a mouse proof container if possible, and certainly do that with any new packs bought. Our Wei used to eat mice by the dozen at times - never got sick and lived to a ripe old age. ;)
  10. My 18-year old still can't learn "tricks". Not too amazing since I still have problems getting the dog to do things. Whenever she thinks I'm "up to something" she runs back and jumps on her bed. Good luck TB - but I suspect the results will be a bit too late. The foot will be functional before the dog is, I think. :D
  11. I think by now you realise that, while raw meaty bones are a major component of the BARF method, table scraps don't really make the grade as the vegetable component. Other components like offal, fish, oils, eggs, and even some cereals (oats, barley) are included in my dogs diet. My Dobe came to us as a 4-year old and I started her on BARF soon after. That was about 2 1/2 years ago now. Her skin and coat have gradually improved over that time and she was actually gaining a bit too much weight - so her meaty bones have been reduced and fewer of the fattier ones are being fed. She is in excellent "working" condition and not fat. She goes ballistic over a carrot or the end of the celery. No need to make special treats for her.

    Heat Pads

With plenty of padding underneath and on top (so the dog is not in direct contact with the heat), you can make it fairly warm to start with and it will insulate from the cold to some extent. However, it does only take a matter of 2 to 2 1/2 mins in the microwave to re-heat - no messy re-fillling and no leaks like with hot water botttles. One can do it quite safely while half asleep, if need be. In the case of night visits outside, just shove it in to re-heat whilst you are out - and then just slide it back in when you come back in. You would need a microwave with the electronic timer, of course, to avoid over-doing it.
  13. I feed the Dobe on a veg mix with lots of "extras" including some offal (but no mince) and on raw meaty bones. She is about 30-32kg. It costs me a little more to feed her that way as opposed to the tins and kibble I used to feed, but if I were to compare it to the more expensive "quality" kibble, I don't think there would be any difference. It does take a bit extra time and effort. Kaisie does well on it and is actually inclined to gain a bit of weight. However, there have been other owners here who have reported that they need to feed a whole lot more to keep their dog in good nick - so I guess there is a variation between dogs and, possibly, different reactions to different mixes.

    Heat Pads

It is really cheap and easy to make your own "heat wheats". If you have a problem getting the wheat - health food stores usually have it - you can use some barley from the supermarket instead. Just sew it into some calico, and make a softer, removable cover (I use velcro to close) to go over it. And that is all to it.
  15. Where are you Nadia? If I ever get another Poodle, I'll need you! And yes - from reading all the stuff here, I'm one of the better ones! No way I would try to clip, but washing and brushing I can do - about 99% anyway.
  16. When I had a Poodle - many moons ago - I used to wonder why my groomer/clipping lady liked my dog so much. Seems there were not many who brushed and washed between grooming sessions. I was only 18 when I got her - and it wasn't that hard, truly - it just took a bit of time and *work*. I guess that is a 4-letter word. Actually, they are both 4-letter words I just realised.
  17. Ok - here's mine:- Good Points- No travelling time It's on whenever I want I do what I want and when Nobody argues with me Nobody tells me I'm doing it wrong Power games don't happen No contradictory instructions We all like Dobes Bad Poits - Nobody to talk to Don't learn much Dog argues with me Dog doesn't always "co-operate" Not much in the way of equipment You guessed it - we run our own "club" 'cause the two I have tried ........................
  18. Yeh - well, that's a recent development. ;) All the horse riding guys I knew as a kid were definitley not gay. Might have been more civilised if they were. They used to do terrible things to us girls - guess it toughened us up a bit, tho. Oh Oh We're off topic again, Erny
  19. Same with horse riding - majority women - but the men who do stick with it are very good at it. ;)
  20. Pyohex Shampoo - same company the makes Malaseb. Might help. Might not - but it was good for my Dobe with a similar problem.
  21. And I thought my dog was just trying to lay guilt trips on me because I'm not patting her and she's getting pats from someone else. Sorry K9 - just an interested pet owner here. :p But I do get sits, drops etc without having food in my hand. :p
