  1. Worth trying raw. At $90 a bag, I doubt it! :D Take her off the dentastix. They would be adding to the problem. Chicken necks will do the same for the teeth and give better results at the other end.
  2. My crate cover is not drafty - it zips up on all sides? What do you have there - Hurricanes? How does the banging happen? We have soft mat in the bottom with lots of bedding on top of that. No noise? Then my dog does not chew - but one can get tough mats for chewers or use hessian bags if need be.
  3. So he admitted it was a vexacious report? Keep a record of it all. The ranger will get tired of it eventually, specially after meeting you and being welcome to inspect. What the neighbour is up to, why they are doing it etc - I guess that would be nice to know - then you will have some idea where you stand re other harassment.
  4. Yep - 2-3% ideal body weight is the general rule of thumb. Vary according to how your dog is going - get someone to show how to assess the condition of the dog. After more activity than usual, a bit more food is ok. Some dogs/breeds need more fat than others. Bones will fill them up. Non-weight bearing bones preferred. Fatty or non-fatty depending on what is needed. Don't forget to add a sprinkling of offal meats - kidney, liver, tripe etc if you make your own. Fish of all sorts can be included too.
  5. Hi S&F! :D Like most things, the right tools make a huge difference. I have the Wahl 2-speed electric AND the TWO battery trimmers. Some blunt ended scissors and some trimming scissors. Between them, the job gets done eventually. I definitely recommend the nail grinder. I took a few weeks and got mine used to the nail file before going to the grinder and she's fine with it. It was a two person job to do the nail clipping.
  6. I agree. What a logical and easy thing to do? Yet.....
  7. I'm learning! Fortunately, most mistakes do grow out! :) The dog is still in one piece, I'm glad to report.
  8. I found none of ours were very kennel friendly. We have a nice brick one out the front and the only time our dogs ever used it was when we were out and they were waiting for us to come home and the weather was not so good. It has something to do with them wanting to be able to see around them. When you think about it, would you want the enemy catching you unawares? :) Come night time, they seem quite happy to curl up as close to their humans (pack)as they can - kennel, crate etc is irrelevant to them!
  9. I was fastidious about keeping Woo and the cat separated at eating time. The cat still eats separately. But she seems to know to keep clear of dog at eating time. It only takes 10 secs for her to eat anyway, so I stay and keep an eye out. They do play - and we separate occasionally when things start to get a bit too enthusiastic. I do think the cat would be more likely to win any disagreement, tho.
  10. A bit of arthritis can deter them from jumping up on the trampoline beds. We lowered the height of the trampoline for one oldie so she could continue to use it. And she did.
  11. In mouth, around the lips and in ears, are a common places too my vet tells me.
  12. I've been trawling the net trying to find pictures of the old type "Alsation" - but of course, Google keeps giving me GSD pics! It was more a case of them being taller, not as thick set, different colouring.
  13. When I was a kid, Alsations and German Shepherds WERE different dogs. Noticeably different.
  14. Does it live under a bridge. Hmm, I dunno if a homeless person would really be here on DOL ... One can use a laptop anywhere these days. :)
  15. I've started my poo eater on some Wild Forage. That is supposed to help. It is a mineral supplement according to the label. From her tendency to vigorously search out the stuff and her addiction to certain grasses, I was convinced something must be missing in her diet. We'll see in due course.
  16. The vet and I used to both end up on the floor wrestling Kaisie for nail clips. Most undignified. I have bought a Wahl nail grinder for Wednesday. After getting her used to the nail file over a few weeks, I finally took out the grinder and it's easy peasy! She was already used to the clippers, so the noise does not bother her as it is much the same. :D Love it!
  17. I have one word for Jerry. But I leave you all to guess what it might be. :D Off to read some real world stuff!
  18. I get your point, Mr Lee. BUT what do you know about the homes of the students? Do you realise that many are living away from home and from their own pets? That many (like I did as a student) have issues in the home that are creating stress above and beyond the studies? And yes, they will kick back - and kick up - once it is over. Hopefully they will not also kick into the alcohol as they often do. In "my day" it was the LSD. And more than one came to grief jumping out of windows. If it teaches a few young people that there are alternatives stress management techniques, then good on them I say! :D AND the Collies look gorgeous!
  19. My father would never let us have animals. Supposedly it had something to do with him having a dog as a kid (so like about 80 years ago now)and he happened to see it run over by a car. Apparently he was pretty traumatised and his answer was just to not have dogs - or cats etc. When I and my DH set up home, the M-i-L gave us a cat. When my Dad visited, no matter where puss was, she'd make a beeline and jump up on his lap. He survived. :D I also came across a lady at my vet's one day who was obviously scared of my Dobe. I kept the dog well away and we had a chat. She had been traumatised by a CHI as a child - bites all over her. Eventually she had the courage to pat my dog, but she was really pushing it. I'd go with trying to chat with the S-i-L and take it from there.
  20. Highly desirable. A friend of ours once lost their mini-Dachshound (Sp?) overboard from their speed boat. And that was only on the Nerang. Could not find the dog for love not money. They finally did get her back after about a week - quite the worse for wear. She did get to shore but would not go near people and was hiding out. At least it was a well populated area and she was eventually tracked down. That was pure luck. IF she had been wearing bright safety jacket, I'm sure they would have found her a lot sooner.
  21. I was told once that apart from the tongue, the next best places a dog loses heat are the paws and the belly areas. Wetting the belly/underneath and legs is better than trying to wet the whole dog. I have clipped Woos belly hair right off for summer. :) Have yet to convince her that the little pool will not bite her.
  22. My little darling will still eat socks if she gets hold of them. Can't say I'm too bothered as it has made the menfolk put their stuff in the wash for a change.
