  1. It does depend on the cause. It can be fungal. Have you noticed any white flaky/dandruff like stuff associated with it? Pyohex or Maleseb used to get it under control with Kaisie - then I'd go onto one of the others, going back to the medicated one if itching/dandruff is noticed. If you don't like the smell, a vinegar rinse will take care of that. And for added aroma, there are plenty of conditioners/rinses to choose from.
  2. Thanks for the thoughts. All is well here. She was a ripe old age for a big dog and for a Dobe in particular. She escaped all the "normal" things they seem to get. She was slowing down and had a bit of arthritis but was otherwise quite healthy. So it was rather unexpected. Vets think probable brain tumor/hemorrhage. A credit to her breeder, I would think.
  3. I just wanted to update and give Vet-N-Pet a compliment. As you know, our Kaisie passed away last week and I mentioned that I actually had an order being processed at the time, most of which was dog stuff for her. Well.... the order had been delayed as they were waiting for stock of one item to arrive and sent me an e-mail to let me know. So I replied telling them what had happened. They replied straight away, expressed their sorrow at the loss of our pet and re-arranged the order, said they would return the cheque and gave me the amount to make out a new one! So it's all ok and I don't have to sell anything on e-bay! BUT on top of that, I received the cheque in the mail today - so it was posted back on the same day we communicated - AND along with it a hand written sympathy card as well. So must let you all know how good they have been. Specially a lady called Paula.
  4. I don't want to labour the point, guys, but just got to post this one. Even on her last day, she still wouldn't throw the cat off her bed. I decided to try putting the cat mat down next to the dog bed that day. Dunno why, just did. And settled them down in their respective places. I went back out there a few minutes later and this is what I found: Really viscious Dobermann she was. ;)
  5. Thank you everyone. One is never alone here.
  6. Yes, if it doesn't turn up soon. I'll have to call them anyway, so if it hasn't even left, they might keep it. Otherwise, some friends might benefit. There are always rescue people who can use that stuff too. For the dogs, that is.
  7. Oh - 0k. Not easy then. Have you asked the vet for an opinion on that? I think that would be my next stop. It might be worth trying a spoonful of plain yoghurt each day - if he can tolerate it, that is.
  8. He always seems to vomit raw meat. So thought I thought slightly cooking it is better. Not sure why he does it, but have just come to the conclusion he doesn't tolerate it very well. Might change when he is older, so will keep offering it to him every now and then. But without fail so far, he throws it straight back up. Mine used to chuck Roo meat. I had to eliminate that from her diet. She was fine without that. See if it a particular meat that offends or if it is all of them.
  9. Perfect sense. You will find many threads on feeding. BARF is something you might like to research. It's an interesting subject. My girl at 11 had not lost a single tooth! PM me if you want to know what I was feeding her. It may not suit you - but hey , the offer is there.
  10. Just one question tho... Why do you need to cook the meat?
  11. As long as your dog is fit and healthy, I don't think it matters. Many threads on feeding seem to come to the conclusion that each dog is different. What suits one, doesn't necessarily suit another. And so on. Each owner has to fine tune to suit their dog. Mine has had a variety of food and thrived on it - right up until we lost her this week that is. She was shiny, active and happy right into old age.
  12. Yeh - every so often I "see" a movement out of the corner of my eye and turn because I automatically assume she is there. Was very different coming home today - no Dobe loping around to the other side of the garage ahead of us. She used to think we didn't see her. And then greet us at the other door acting as if she is surprised we are home. Sorry about your girl too Ruftybear. That reminds me - her medications are in the cupboard - and all sorts of stuff is around. Oh - and huge order from Vet-N-pet is in the mail too. Dunno what I'm going to do with that.
  13. Thank you everyone. I have read all your messages. You would have been right Saffyluv. We were thinking fit of some sort. She seemed to come good for a bit but then started to get worse again and that is when I rang the vet and took her straight down. She was in shock so they put her on a drip and gave her meds. At least she had pain relief. Whatever it was, I think her stressing over the storm coming was the final straw. It was going to happen sooner or later, obviously. Yes, I will remember the good times. And try to stop looking around to check on her. You do that with old dogs don't you?
  14. Oh my goodness..... so many have come in to post here. You are all wonderful. Thank you all for your messages and thoughts. It's going to take a while before stop looking for her.
  15. Thank you everyone. Vale: KARVIC SECRET SOCIETY 02/07/99 - 01/06/2011 Kaisie passed away during the night at the vets. Bloods showed inflammation "somewhere". Apparently if it was an infection she would have been running a temp, which she was not. Next most likely is a tumor - somewhere. As she had no signs of digestive, liver or kidney problems, next most likeLY was brain tumor. And her signs were consistent with that. It was pretty quick and while she did seem distressed, she was quiet and calm while I was with her. I'm sorry I was not with her at the end. But I am glad I took her to the vet. They have been really good and I thank them for their care. I think the vet and the vet nurse were closer to tears than I was, even tho they must have seen it a thousand times before. Thank you again to all the dolers who have been so good. Not just yesterday and today, but over the last 8 years! It was with Dol's help that she turned from an OTT crazy that pulled like a train on the lead to a real Dobermann. Our friend and protector, member of our pack.
  16. She is 11 now. I fear her time may have come. Thank you for all your thoughts everyone. You are all wonderful.
  17. Thank you everyone. She's not looking good. The vet is putting her on a drip and treating the symptoms tonight and doing tests. She thinks we have a neurological issue, she can feel a mass in the abdomen and she has lost quite a bit of weight. More than I realised or she should have on the diet I have been feeding her. The vet thinks possible haemorrhage somewhere. Old dog and all, it's not looking very positive.
  18. Never mind. She is at the vets for the night. It's not looking good.
  19. Kaisie has just acted rather strangely. It is thundering so she is nervous...but She got up and was salivating profusely. A clear drool. My OH took her outside where she stood for some time, not willing to move or paying any attention to us - just looking sort of distressed. After a while she turned to my talking to her and followed me inside. Anyone seen this? Could it just be her fear of the storm? If so, it is strange she went outside when OH called her to go out there. Edit to add: She is not drooling/salivating now, even tho the storm is now overhead and it is raining. She just looks uncomfortable like she always does during storms.
  20. Noisymina - south of Brisbane Safe. Son has evacuated Brisbane CBD and reached Beenleigh. Expect him home in a few minutes. We will probably be cut off for a while eventually but no biggy.
  21. It's not a doggy door. It's a "go 'round.".
  22. There are organisms in decaying plant matter that are highly toxic. Botulism is one that I know of. What a terrible experience. We lost a dog to that along time ago. But a whole different story. She was gone when I went out to feed her one night. Only took 3-4 hours total.
  23. I have seen my dogs peel bananas. Just hold a piece of banana in front of our Dobe and watch her drool all over the floor. Watch them grazing in the mulberries, acerolas, joboticabas, black sapote etc etc and even grazing the grass alongside the horse! Oh - and the Wei used to crack Macadamias and eat them. Before you tell me they are "poisonous" you shoudl know she went on good and strong to 16 years. I don't think she actualy ate many of them since it was such hard work. We never sat and fed them to her in any quantity. They do all that voluntarily - not because we teach them to do it.
  24. The best thing for him. He would have been in a lot of pain from the spinal injury. And that may well have been the route by which the bacteria eneterd the cerebrospinal fluid.
  25. I think you will find it is illegal to keep ferrets in Q'ld - just as it is illegal to keep rabbits without a special permit. However, if you want to come up and provide my dog with some rabbits, I'm not comnplaining. Gees - I'd probably eat them myself.
