  1. I buy Ester C too - I get it online. Easier to find and cheaper. I also feed dogs Eagle Pack IF they have kibble at all. I've heard good things about their formula for large breed pups.
  2. Yep, I agree with others. Just stick it in their mouth - no fuss, quick, so they hardly notice you do it. I rarely treat after (ie no fuss) - but I would if I was teaching a difficult dog to tolerate it.
  3. Barbaric, lazy and disgusting. The poor little creatures.
  4. calcium ascorbate is metabolised more efficiently by dogs and doesn't cause as much gastric upset. I think (but not sure) you have to use more of the Acid form to get similar results - but then you run the risk of causing stomach upset. If it were me I'd get the gentler form, but I don't supplement with Vit C unless the dog is sick etc. You can always keep the Ascorbic Acid for humans when they need it. Also, Vit C, in any form, may not be utilised well if it's not in combination with other things such as Vitamin E. I also wonder what else is on the diet sheet because the puppy's healthy growth is linked to the total diet, not just one element. Is she on a natural diet? If not, what sort of kibble etc does she get? Does her food already have a vitamin C supplement in it? There is some debate about whether you should supplement puppy's food with Vit C at all and there is broader agreement that too much Vit C can have a bad effect. So you wouldn't want to increase her intake without knowing what you're doing or if it's safe.
  5. Wow - in the process of looking up "facts" about all this I'm shocked to discover how much is being charged in exhorbitant legal fees (several tiers of legal reps in court to battle unrepresented pensioners!!! and expenses such as cost of hiring private planes and costly hotel accomodation for the prosecutors witness!!!! Say what????) by the RSPCA's legal team. But even more shocked to learn that in at least one branch the legal services are provided by - (and charged for at shocking amounts) - people who are on the board of the RSPCA!!! Er..... kinda puts a whole different light on this ridiculous RSPCA funding whinge. Sometimes I wish I didn't keep running off to find out stuff...... It just makes me feel sick to my stomach.
  6. Yes, well, I used to plan on leaving money to the RSPCA - but not any more. I will leave it to someone who does actually use it for animal welfare. But good on these people for trying to help animals - that's the good side of humanity. (PS Bet their rellies were SPEWING hee hee) By the way, I note these people generally attached a specific PURPOSE to their bequests but that is where the problems came up in Tas. According to staff who resigned, money being given for specific things (eg sponsoring a particular project) was instead being used for astronomical "admin" costs including pay rises and bonuses for the execs.
  7. I would love to read the annual report for Tassie RSPCA - given the goings on over here in the past year or so with RSPCA staff resigning in a blaze of angst and publicity etc. And especially as I couldn't get them to tell me anything in person. But I can't find it on their website. Maybe I'm just stupid. If anyone can find it and point me in the right direction I'd be most grateful I did read the stats on the main RSPCA site. They are of limited help tho, because they only touch the surface of what's actually going on. For instance, stats dont tell you if "behavioural issues" is just a catch-all heading for "convenience" or if it really is based on a proven, fair, method of sorting out the rehomable lovelies from the "irredeemable" animals. Or if "health" routinely includes "old age" (and that means more than a couple of years old) or if they only PTS those dogs who have a specific, serious and painful/untreatable health problem so that it would be cruel to keep them alive. Nor does it tell you what criteria they use for any of this.
  8. Just read the friends justifications. Still not seeing anything that excuses her allowing her dog to get pregnant AGAIN and then not having the guts to deal with the situation humanely and maturely. 'Oh, this is a nuisance, I'll just dump them in a charity bin' doesn't cut it no matter which way you spin it. Apart from anything else, why a charity bin? Don't you think they are sick and tired of people using their bins like this? Why should they be put in a situation where they go to empty a donation bin only to be confronted with several tiny dead puppies in a bag. Nice of the friend to try but really, instead of defending her, the friend would do better to spend her energy giving this woman a wake up call and telling her to start acting like an adult. That's what a real friend would do.
  9. I think... but not 100% certain, that Westerners have been known to boil seafood alive. Supposed to enhance the flavour or sommat. Just sayin'
  10. I must be in a stupid mood today - I read the title of this thread and imagined a bunch of rampaging cross-dressing tranny dogs disrupting Crufts by miming to Diana Ross numbers hee hee
  11. I'm so sick of pathetic excuses like this. SHe had any number of options (including not letting the dog have pups in the first place) but chose to do something extremely cruel. Putting them in a freezer bag and chucking them into a hot charity bin!!! What did she think would be the result of that? The woman has either no brains or no compassion (or both) and probably shouldn't be allowed around children let alone allowed to keep the adult dog. And yes, why didnt they make sure she desexed her dog??? Ridiculous.
  12. Well I don't eat cows, pigs etc anyway. But the main point is that the conditions these animals are being kept in prior to be killed is absolutely appalling. Mind you, the way our food animals are kept isn't always much better - one of the reasons I stopped eating them. I do feel there's a difference between cows/sheep etc and dogs/cats tho - it's probably a cultural thing but there ya are - I can't help that.
  13. OMG I had to look: http://upsidedowndogs.com/pet505/izzy-the-...anlabrador-mix/
  14. If the ranger and/or council are being useless then go over their heads. I would be considering 1. The police 2. The RSPCA 3. Contacting the local MP - if you follow up in writing they are obliged to investigate why the Council is not taking appropriate action on this stray dog. ANy or all of the above. I know it can be difficult in a small community but your situation is beyond ridiculous!
  15. Sorry but my experience with Police is that you should NEVER rely on them for legal advice etc. They do not know that stuff. Personally I'd recommend you start with a friendly warning that confirms your previous verbal warnings for them not to enter your property. Mention specifically what you said to them and when. I would leave out all mention of "dangerous dogs" but would mention you have a dog in the yard. If that doesnt work then I'd get a legal letter, from a law firm or legal center with an official warning. Something like this:
  16. Oh ok. So generally it's not a problem but can indicate a health issue if it's suddenly more water consumption than normal. Gotcha. With dallys the more they drink the better basically - they need to flush crystals out of their urine - which is why I was puzzled about someone being concerned about drinking a lot of water. I only get worried when they don't drink enough.
  17. One of my dogs used to drink like a camel and did the worlds longest pees. He would drink half a bucket at a time - easily. Why does this matter? What damage can it do? It never seemed to harm my boy.
  18. Does this mean they found the ar$ehole who did this and siezed the puppy??? I really hope so.
  19. Yeah - not wierd at all. And not really gross. Just normal doggy affectionate stuff. Don't worry about it.
  20. the online health food stores are a bust so far. Hmmmm hadnt thought of green pet - I'll check there now - thanks
  21. Yes feisty! It was one of the things I used to battle my old girls tumors. I'm actually also looking for that too - another product I used to get from the Melbourne mob BTW in case anyone's getting confused. There is a difference between grape seed extract and grapefruit seed extract - tho both are good!
  22. awww taite is so cute! ETA: All of my dogs have been babies about going outside when it's raining. I usually have to go out there with them and once they get a bit wet they stop sooking about it. As for your puppy - I'd probably try putting him on a lead and taking him just outside the front gate for a bit of a wander - if it were mine. LOL That's sweet that you feel bad for him but you needn't He is just being a wee sooky lala which is understandable at that tiny age hee hee
  23. Thanks Erny and Stoltz. Yes, I'll check out the health food shop in Launceston next time I'm there. But being a bit remote here I was hoping to find it online.... The Melbourne mob sold at a good price. A shame they are phasing out their medicinal herb etc lines....
  24. Its helpful at fighting infections and drug-resistant bacteria, alkalising the body, treating candida, boosting the immune system, wound healing and can also be used as a safe disinfectant.
  25. Thanks for that comment Jackie A few days ago the same thing happened to my dog after being in the car in the heat (accidental!!). He was staggering, disoriented, refusing to eat or drink etc.... I remembered this thread and your comment and put a handfull of honey in his mouth a few times as well as syringing Lectade into him. After a few hours he came good.
