  1. Awwww that's okay that you're upset over a canary! He sounds like he was quite a little character Sorry you lost him!
  2. Oh that would've been a horrible experience! So sorry that happened! I don't usually have problems with bee stings but once, about a year or so ago, my dalmatian Guiness got stung by a European wasp (he used to climb up into the grape vine and try to compete with the wasps for the grapes!!! I'm surprised he only got stung once!). ANyway, it was right above his eye and I actually saw it swell up as I was looking at him while talking to a friend. I was very worried about his eye and it was a HUGE swelling!!! I immediately applied apple cider vinegar (carefully) and a cold compress with a rosemary and plantain herb mix in it (kept replenishing the herb tea in the compress) then gave him some homeopathic remedies for good measure = it went down again within half an hour. Don't really know if the homeopathic pills did anything tho. Great to hear Divani is fine!
  3. What reputable breeders would sell their pups through a pet shop???? That Derraugh character is scary. SHe sounds like Cruella De Ville to me "Get me MORE PUPPIES!!!" ...... French guy "yes more poopies!!"
  4. Wow - who knew my idle curiousity would result in such an interesting thread. This may sound like a stupid question but if they are not supposed to be sold - is it regarded as all right to give them away? I ask because in the same pet classifieds there was a 1 yr old lab being given away by a registered breeder because he (as it turned out when I rang to ask) is deaf. Is this regarded as good practice by breeders? IE giving away dogs that are not allowed to be sold or have some kind of "issue". If not, what "should" the breeder do with dogs that fall foul of these rules? PS It is so nice to see you posting on topics of interest to you again jed!!!
  5. ANy dog with pale pigment can get those, sunbaking and light or white dogs is not a good mix. Being a Boxer does not really come into it. That's true ;) Dallys are susceptible for eg
  6. It wouldn't be negligent if you made people aware of the potential issues. But I guess the same could be said of many other dogs with specific problems or potential problems. ETA - and I think they should be given a swift kick for writing so horribly ;)
  7. how weird would that be! Anyway - thanks for clearing that up
  8. LOL I dont know how people can resist an enthusiastic puppy or goofy adult dog for that matter LOL
  9. awww poor baby looks so sad! Sending lots of healing vibes and spotty-dog kisses!
  10. Thanks for the article curlybert - I wish they'd put some paragraphs in it tho - so hard to read!! But from what I read it doesn't sound good for the poor white pups! But yeah - it must be a typo - I would hope! I just wasn't sure.
  11. I'm just curious about this because I nearly spat all my coffee out when I read it! There was an ad in Sat Examiner for boxer puppies. It said something like "1 female $1000 and 2 white males $6000 each" SIX THOUSAND!!! Is that normal? Is it because they are white? What is that difference in price all about and are puppies really sold for that kind of price? I mean I think a white boxer pup would be as cute as all get out but I didn't even spend half of that buying a car :D Perhaps I'm just naive or wierd or something!
  12. My old girl used to do the reverse sneeze a lot - I would put my hand on her nose and gently massage it and it seemed to help. Could be it just calmed her, distracted her, had a physical effect or had no effect at all and just happened to coincide with the reverse sneezing stopping LOL But it made both of us feel better anyway
  13. Awww the poor little guy! He looks like a sweetheart and I really hope he recovers well from all this! Definitely take photos etc and report this. With bills that high you may be in for a fight and the owner of that DA dog SHOULD pay for the damage he/she inflicted. The fact that they are keeping in touch may just be a ploy to stop you reporting it and they are already setting you up to wriggle out of helping you financially by the sounds of it. And as others have said - they need to understand the consequences of their "denial". I wouldn't let him play with that staffy again, I just wouldn't trust it any more. Everyone is giving you great advice. If you lived near me I'd offer to have Sid play with Pepper because she doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. But I'm sure there are dogs like her near you and I'd stick with them. Good luck and my sympathies to all of you - that's just terrible. I am so lucky I can take my dogs well away from other dogs because I live in the country.
  14. Oh dear! The pitfalls of internet communication.
  15. My friends have this sign on their property hee heeHow does that fit in with all this legal guff? I like the "dogs running free" sign - for all sorts of reasons
  16. I know someone who trained in acupuncture and treats both animals and humans. I've been considering that as an option myself.
  17. Hey Nushie For a whole host of reasons dalmatians generally shouldn't have a lot of red meat. So it's good that your mum found this out one way or another!
  18. I found the NOrth Hobart Vets to be very good when I lived in Hobart and they apparently have a visiting specialist in dermatology NHV
  19. Good grief! I had no idea mouldy sandwiches could be that dangerous! Thanks for the warning and I hope Nu-Nu is okay!
  20. Martingale collar on Pepper, it doesn't pull on her neck as much as a flat collar and works similar to one, but allows me to have some control if she gets over-excited on the lead. Also it's got pretty patterns on it Tango has a front-lead harness because he pulls. He's getting better at walking tho and it's starting to annoy me because I use a long lead for him and it tends to slip under his body all the time (giving him wedgies!!). So I'm looking for alternatives for him. I won't use a head harness halti thingy or check chain unless I had absolutely no other choice. So far I haven't need a check chain for any of my dogs (but did try one on the big boofer dog my neighbour was neglecting - didn't help - he snapped it after he'd spent all his time happily choking himself half to death on it anyway)
  21. Just thought I'd let you all know the news on this boy. I rang the shelter today and spoke to a lovely lady about George and about Penny the dalmatian. Gorgeous George is definitely a Border Collie and is actually a pure-bred BC (well according to the person who surrendered him) BUT from a backyard breeder. He was surrendered along with another male (black/white) and female (tan/white - Sandy who is also on the website) by the mother of the person who was breeding them (but the dogs were all different ages). The "breeder" was not a puppy farmer but someone who let her dogs keep randomly breeding litters. Anyway - Gorgeous George has been adopted and so has the black/white (who they told me was one of the most beautiful BCs they'd come across). All three have been well-treated by the previous owners and are very happy healthy dogs. Sandy is still waiting for a new home. You'll be pleased to know that they are careful about who they adopt dogs to. When I talked with them about the dalmatian the lady told me she's had lots of interest in Penny BUT has refused several people. One of the people she did a yard check on and there was no fence between where the dog would be and the chickens. When she pointed that out the woman said "Can't I just train her not to chase chickens" and the TDH lady said "She is only 6 months old - she won't just learn immediately" She failed her on the yard check. (She also told me that as she was leaving the woman mumbled something about when her "other two dogs" had chased and killed chickens she would thump them with the dead chook - so she was VERY glad she'd refused her application!!!!) So clearly they are careful about rehoming dogs! If you're curious this is their policy and why I support them over the... er ... other mob ;) TDH policy
