Does Anyone Feed Tongue To Their Dogs?
jacobite replied to Garden Girl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We feed it about once a week, cut into cubes, about an inch each side and simmer for about 20-30 minutes, we also put in ox liver, diced and a glob of Vegemite, give to the dogs when it has cooled. They LOVE it. It does look yucky...... and you need a sharp knife to cut it, it also blunts the knife fairly fast. I usually sharpen before cutting, and sometimes during.... Dave -
Dog Training/agility Etc Near Albury?
jacobite replied to MYSQL's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You could get in touch with Trisven13 who posts on here, lives in Albury, very nice Lady. Dave -
So did I... Cute pup all the same though!! Most Staghounds nowadays are bred from "pure" Staghounds ( you know what I mean )...... the most favoured original cross was Deerhound X Greyhound. I knew some-one who had Staghounds and Deerhounds and he never cross-bred his Deeries to produce Stags. Dave

I think bones are great for puppies, apart from being good for them it distracts them from chewing less desirable objects. I give all my pups bones as soon as they can chew them, as the pups grow the bones get bigger.

I agree with Wilooka and Poodlefan. You buy the dog and he/she is YOURS...... end of story. The only qualification we make as a breeder is to say...... any problems and you want to get rid of the dog, bring him/her back to us, we will arrange good home. Dave

Yes, what they all said....... At least 3 feeds a day, 4 is probably better, the puppy will tell you if he ( or She ) is getting too much ( HIGHLY unlikely...) Up to 6 months or so, if Pup leaves food it is getting too much. Also..... take the new pup to a good Vet NOW....... We always recommend to people who buy pups from us to do this... We just bought a pup from our best friend, who we trust absolutely... ( if there is re-incarnation I want to come back as one of her dogs..... ) Took pup ( Rosie ) to Vet next day, as expected no problems. Edited for typo

I think the 6 weeks bit comes because the puppy is not physically dependent on "Mum" any more, ie a pup that age will be weaned and eating solid food etc. HOWEVER..... the next 2 weeks are very important so the pup can learn ( more exactly, get re-inforced ) proper social behavior from the adult dogs around and it's brothers and sisters. We NEVER sell a pup at 6 weeks, minimum is 8 weeks, Pam would prefer 12 weeks....but by then they eat SSOOOO much....... We have sold at 12 weeks if the new owner cannot take pup for one reason or another.....and they have all settled OK. In fact we bought our last pup at 12 weeks because the friend we bought from could not decide which of 2 bitches she wanted to keep. The girl we got settled in very quickly.

Good Vet Wanted In Eastern Suburbs
jacobite replied to jacobite's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Many thanks for the info, also had a PM on this ( thank you Cathy ), will let you know how we get on. Feel sorry for our young pup, she cannot go for a run off lead, walks are OK for her...... She is starting to get "Cabin Fever"...... Luckily she is a cheerful soul. -
For this sort of problem we go to Barry Haywood in North Dandenong who specialises in movement problems and Greyhound racing injuries but he is not free until a week Thursday. If we go to our usual Vet they will prescribe Rymadil and rest... we would like to go to some-one who will get to the root of the problem and fix that. We live in Belgrave, so any-one within half an hour or so, if possible. Thanks in advance Pam and Dave

Can this guy make any noises at all ? That sounds like such a put-down, not meant that way....... That is, can he "growl" at the dog to say "bad dog" ? Can he make pleasant noises to say "good dog" ? In any case, terrific to hear he is overcoming his problems. Makes our own little problems seem like, well.... little problems... And, still PETA wants to take our dogs away from us.......

I agree with Hounder.... in fact, if I remember correctly ( I don't always...... ) we did this for Hounder with her Bree for a couple of weeks ( Hounder, do I remember correctly ? ) In any case we have done this for several people, happy to do so for a good home for our pups, also we never charge for the "extra" weeks..... Might if it was 6 or 8 weeks..... but 2 or 3 is no problem. ASIDE to Hounder..... we just went to a points show, BOY got BOB ( 17 dogs ) and Junior in Group......"quite" pleasing.... Dave.

Perhaps this is the problem We sell our pups ( Scottish Deerhounds, not a popular breed ) for $1000 and no-one EVER queries the price. I don't know Goldies, but it seems to me they are very popular and, I would have thought they should sell for $1000 easily. This may sound venal ( sting the buyers for as much as you can..... ) but we have found that if you sell cheap the buyers do not value the dog and may treat it badly...... Yes, we have had a bad experience of this..... Questions.... ARE they purebred ? Registered ? Inoculated ? etc.. etc.. Dave

I worry that mine is too skinny but apparently she is just right with the last two ribs showing. Now if I can just work on her little neuroses and penchant for stealing underwear and reading glasses We have Scottish Deerhounds, very like Greys in temperament ( I THINK...... ) Your "skinny" bit is right, you should be able to see the last 2 ribs.... on our Deeries you should be able to feel the last 2 ribs. NO way you can see with all the coat...... Stealing...... one of our Deeries does this, steals my ( used, of course.... ) socks...... ( YUCK.... ) and my reading glasses, never damages them, just leaves them in her bed. Never steals anything else..... mobile phone, TV remotes, books... all safe... just socks and specs....... no doubt Freud would have a field day with the meaning of this. Perhaps she wants to see why my socks smell so bad......

NOT absolutely essential, but a GOOD idea..... We have Scottish Deerhounds..... VERY similar to Greyhounds in most respects. They do have some Vet-type issues... bit delicate about anaesthetics, ( knew I'd spell that wrong... ) because of their white blood cell count... all sight-hounds are the same. Where do you live ? if in the East of Melbourne we can put you to some good Vets. Otherwise look for a vet who specialisses ( spelling AGAIN... ) in racing Greyhounds.

We do feed our dogs cabbage, mixed with other vegetables, ALWAYS cooked..... we have 5 Deerhounds in the house so smelly farts are a NO-NO In any case dogs cannot digest raw veg..... which is why their farts will be smelly ASIDE..... isn't it nice ? most talk between dog owners VERY soon gets round to Death, Sex or Farts...... Got to love them.......

Unless you have a possible solution to my question, i am not interested in getting another lecture about not desexing my dogs by someone on this site. Hey, Andrea it seems to me you got some good advice here from people who wanted to help you. It also seems you did not want them to say these things..... Sorry, but the solution to your problem is not going to come from "us" telling you to keep on as you are...... seems to me that is what you want, you have to face the situation as it is.... not hope it is going to be the way you want. I know people who have 2 or more Males in the house... it works for them.... I have tried it.... it NEVER worked for me.

We only eat cooked meat, so pretty sure our dogs can cope with it....... OK, more seriously......mostly we feed raw, as has been said NEVER cook chicken frames...... Sometimes we cook mince and add a bit of Vegemite to tempt a dog who is being a bit finicky, seldom fails. We used to feed most meat cooked with Vegemite, but now we have 4 adult Scottish Deerhounds and a Deerie puppy, who eats HEAPS........ So cooking is a major exercise....... raw goes down just as well....... We give vegetables 2 feeds out of 3 as well...... these are always cooked... 3 minutes in microwave.

We feed sardines once a week, as every-one says the dogs LOVE them, one of our Deerhounds prefers them in tomato sauce....... Cheaper than sardines ( we have 5 deeries..... ) is Snappy Tom cat food, the dogs like it just as much. Lark is a bit miffed as it does not come in tomato sauce..... she still wolfs it down...... Two cans is enough as an additive for 5 deeries and a whippet.

What Fish Do You Feed Your Dogs And How Often?
jacobite replied to Norskgra's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We feed sardines about once a week ( we have 4 adult deerhounds and a DH puppy and a whippet ) we buy the No-name, they all LOVE it.... One of our Deeries prefers Sardines in tomato sauce. Another good source ( sauce..... ) of fish is Snappy Tom cat food, is cheap ( look again at the number of dogs we have.... ) and they love it. They NEVER leave any food when we put sardines or Snappy Tom in it. -
Yes, you did the right thing, I apologise to you. Congrats on your breakthrough

barking anytime between 4.15am and 5.30am. :D Does the ignore her thing really work - as we tried thismorning and she barked solid from 5.15 to 6am. Stopped for 15 mins and then started again at 6.15. You have neighbors and you let your dog bark this long, at this time of the morning ??????? PLEASE.... don't ever come live next door to me.......

We buy Bonnie for our dogs, they like it, fairly cheap.. we have 4 Scottish Deerhounds so price IS a factor.... We supplement with other things of course...... mince beef, mince chicken, chicken necks, chicken frames, sardines ( once a week )

Sounds like a food allergy to me..... we have a dog who was like it...... We went to some-one who takes a hair from the dog and analyses it, she told us what Boy ( yes that is his pet name.. ) is allergic to Yes, I know it sounds like mumbo-jumbo..... I only went along to keep Pam quiet, but her findings sounded right and since adopting her reccomendations Boy has improved out of sight. BTW my schooling was in Physics and I am an Electronics Tech so I look at results....... Feel free to PM me if you want to know more......

We have Scottish Deerhounds, yes pups do hiccup, we never worry about it...... The thing I wanted to say...... you only put a little water in the bowl. NONE of our dogs like this.... some will not drink unless the bowl is fairly full. Don't know why.... we jokingly say they like a good slurp, and to spread it round the kitchen........ But it is definitely true, our old girl will not drink unless there is 4 or 5 centimetres of water.... :p :p ;) :p :p

Agree with what Showdog says..... Buy a good one, they will last a long time. You may not need it very often but when you do need it, you REALLY need it. We have used ours to send a pup to Tasmania.... told the people "next time you "drive" over to see your family etc..... bring it back.... worked out well.
