Requirements For Dogs On Utes
roundhill replied to Miss BeRidgierent's topic in General Dog Discussion
Miss B, I am unable to suggest any harness brand for you but can i please just offer some other advice. Please ensure that your dog is unable to get out of the harness and when your dogs ride in the back of the ute, could you please ensure that the length of lead is short enough so that it does not allow the dog to get any part of its body over the edge of the ute. It is a pet hate of mine to see beautiful animals not secured correctly and in such ways that if the dog were to fall off balance they would end up hanging over the edge etc. All our dogs travel in a dog box on the back of the ute and some are only tied onto the tray when we are mustering. -
Melzawelza, regardless of the type of dog, reading your account of the situation this just does not seem a logical practice for any breeder to undertake (approaching unknown people at the boarding kennel this morning). If the bitch was ready to be served then the person must have known that she was coming on heat well before today and prior to the potential sire being hit by a car. I would have thought that alternate arrangements could have been made before today either with his vet or friends as this mating was obviously important to him. I find it odd.

Keeping Mozzies Off The Dogs When Outside
roundhill replied to Kayann's topic in General Dog Discussion
We use this also on the dogs and horses -
The paw print pendants look fantastic. Have informed OH and made statements about what a great idea this would be for a birthday present! Don't like my chance though, will most likely have to treat myself. I also like the linked 4cm, 3cm & 2cm Expression Circles.

YM you have obviously helped out on numerous occasions previously. As there has been no further action taken by the owners to keep their boy in and safe, then I would be calling the council.
-
Sandra64 - Yes they are very good judges of character. If the dog doesn't like someone then it is probably for a very good reason and in most caes it could be very wise to proceed with caution. Gotta love the stumpies .............. and ACDs of course but then I am a little biased

The best friend you will ever have is an ACD. Yes you will have to ensure that they have adequate training, exercise and stimulation. One bored ACD can soon turn the backyard into something that looks like a cyclone had hit it. Please be aware that the cost of an ACD pup can range from $400 up to $900 and sometimes even more than this. You have mentioned the hearing test but you may like to look into the following also. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – Progressive Rod / Cone Degeneration (PRCD) that is known to have caused blindness in ACDs. More information can be found at http://www.ar.com.au/~norclark/abt_pra.htm Hip Dysplasia - diagnosis must be made via taking x-rays of the joint and typically sending the film to organizations that will evaluate, register and certify the dog. More information can be found at www.hipdysplasiaindogs.com Luxating Patella - The patella or kneecap can luxate or dislocate. The problem has been evident in ACDs with the breed suffering from lateral luxation in most cases diagnosed. More information can be found at www.vetsurgerycentral.com/patella.htm Check out the breeder listings on dogzonline for a breeder near you http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/commun...-cattle-dog.asp and Check out the puppy listings also http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/puppie...-cattle-dog.asp It's a great idea to be well informed before you purchase a pup As for what age to desex a pup, I too would suggest around 6 months. May I also suggest that you browse the mature dog page http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature...-cattle-dog.asp as breeders can often post dogs for rehoming. It is a good idea to check out the ACD rescue website as DMA has suggested. You never know what may come through their doors. As you are looking into desexing the dog, then there may be a dog there that will suit you. Is there any reason why you specifically wish to purchase an 8 week old pup?

Sorry Oceanaussi I may have confused you with talking about a standard length tray. The following is how all Hilux utes come from the factory with a tub back. Only the tailgate drops down at the back. The tray that we have on our Hilux (as shown below) you actually have to ask the dealer to add to the ute. It is 6ft in length, this is the standard length for a tray. Some people ask for them to be made slightly longer than this one. All the sides of the tray drop down and can be removed. I hope this helps.
-
Here is our new ute purchased just prior to christmas with the standard 6ft tray. This is the back view As you can see the tray comes standard with small sides that drop down and can be removed easily also. Hubby has made a temporary shelter for the dogs that has rubber matting on the floor and 3 points to tie the dogs onto. This is for short trips to keep them shaded and off the hot tray. We are in the process of having a dog box made that will cater for 2 dogs and have a toolbox on top. It will be both fully enclosed and lockable with internal mesh doors. The roof will be insulated and it will have a removable timber floor. There will be an air vent at the front and side of each of the boxes to allow air circulation. I will try and find a photo of our old box that will help explain it a lot better. I had my heart set on the Prado but when we went test driving we discovered that it was very small inside. Hubby is 6ft 4 and he could not fit in the front. There wasn't as much leg room and space. So that is how we ended up with the Kluger.

Sparky this may have been the case many years ago but registered ACD breeders have come a long way in regards to the temperament of the breed. This sort of temperament does nothing for the breed and is rarely seen today within the showing community. The best breed to work cattle that would be hard to pin point. Naturally the ACD’s purpose was to work cattle but these days you will find lines of Kelpies and Border Collies that have specifically been selected and bred for this purpose also. You could choose any of these breeds for the job as long as you have selected a dog from proven bloodlines. These animals would have been specifically chosen and bred for their natural working ability on cattle. Any breed of dog may bite someone that knocks on your front door; it all depends on their temperament.
-
They are loyal, determined, and willing to please. Like all dogs temperament can depend on the bloodlines chosen so I would not like to make general statements. The bloodlines that I have experienced within Kelpies, Border Collies and ACD’s have been very similar in temperament. We have actually had Kelpies that have been mentally tougher than the ACD’s. They were all chosen for their working abilities. Agree Agree

It's Official - Atlas Is An Amazing Protector
roundhill replied to FranVT's topic in General Dog Discussion
Wow what an ordeal for you. Well done to your mate Atlas. Dogs are very good judges of character and have a great ability to read situations. -
Joel my first thoughts would be a cream working kelpie. I have attached photos of a cream kelpie for your to compare. The cream kelpies can also have white markings on them.
-
If they don't like the cocker spaniel then maybe suggest a Whippet or Italian Greyhound.
-
Mikelli. That is a good simple idea. You could even use the keyed Whitco Sliding Aluminium Window Locks with the push buttons. They could all be keyed the same for extra security.
-
This is the only photo I could find of the rodeo ute and ARB canopy I use to have. The higher canopy was useful as it allowed extra room for the dogs. The back was set up like Weibritty's.
-
Sorry to go on a tangent Oceanaussi but I would just like to ask Mikelli a few questions about the setup they have posted. Mikelli - I like your setup on the tray. I have seen a few variations that would be similar to this. It would be good in all weather conditions. The dogs and equipment would be secure when travelling and it would also be easily accesible for the vertically challenged like myself. For the hot days / nights when you are camped and have the sides up, do you have any locks on cage doors to prevent people from opening the cages easily. How does your setup cope on dirt roads with the dust?
-
Oceanaussi We have also just recently upgraded from a diesel holden rodeo twin cab with canopy to a twin cab hilux with a tray back. We are going to have dog boxes made for the tray. I found the canopy and tub liner on the rodeo to be very good when travelling to shows with my dogs as they could be comfortable and secure. We use to place a false floor over the wheel arches to sit crates on (you could get 2 in this way) and all other camping stuff fitted neatly under this between the wheel arches. If we didn't have the false floor then i could only fit 1 crate in. I experienced problems with this set up as I am a little vertical challenged (approx 160cm tall). I found reaching over the tailgate to open and close doors of crates and lifting pups that could not jump into the crates to be a problem. The canopy limited what the ute coud be used for around the farm due to the height limitations with the canopy. When the canopy was not on the ute I found that reaching into the front of the tub to get things out was also a problem. I could never have a tub back on the hilux as it was even higher than the rodeo. We have chosen the tray back this time as it allows easier access, no problems with the wheel arches getting in the way, I can easily reach onto the tray, the dog box can be bolted onto the tray for easy removal, I can easily acess the dogs and get things in and out of the boxes, the vehicle is still able to be used on farm as a back portion of tray is still available to put a motorbike on, cart horse feed, fencing gear etc. I too have a kluger, we purchased it 7 months ago and have already covered 45000kms in it and find it extremely comfortable and roomy. I would not recommend the prado, we found that it did not have the same amount of room as the kluger. The ute will give you more room for your dogs than the kluger...they might just miss the air conditioner and the tunes . Good luch with your search

Brad knows his stuff. He is a very good handler.

Wounds such as this I would wash in warm salty water. Gets into all the areas. Sounds like an irritation causing infection like others have said maybe a grass seed. If I am taking anything to the vet I do not put any betadine etc on it so the vet can get a clear look at the wound. Hope all is well.
