Miss B, I am unable to suggest any harness brand for you but can i please just offer some other advice. Please ensure that your dog is unable to get out of the harness and when your dogs ride in the back of the ute, could you please ensure that the length of lead is short enough so that it does not allow the dog to get any part of its body over the edge of the ute. It is a pet hate of mine to see beautiful animals not secured correctly and in such ways that if the dog were to fall off balance they would end up hanging over the edge etc. All our dogs travel in a dog box on the back of the ute and some are only tied onto the tray when we are mustering.

Melzawelza, regardless of the type of dog, reading your account of the situation this just does not seem a logical practice for any breeder to undertake (approaching unknown people at the boarding kennel this morning). If the bitch was ready to be served then the person must have known that she was coming on heat well before today and prior to the potential sire being hit by a car. I would have thought that alternate arrangements could have been made before today either with his vet or friends as this mating was obviously important to him. I find it odd.

Sandra64 - Yes they are very good judges of character. If the dog doesn't like someone then it is probably for a very good reason and in most caes it could be very wise to proceed with caution. Gotta love the stumpies .............. and ACDs of course but then I am a little biased

The best friend you will ever have is an ACD. Yes you will have to ensure that they have adequate training, exercise and stimulation. One bored ACD can soon turn the backyard into something that looks like a cyclone had hit it. Please be aware that the cost of an ACD pup can range from $400 up to $900 and sometimes even more than this. You have mentioned the hearing test but you may like to look into the following also. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) – Progressive Rod / Cone Degeneration (PRCD) that is known to have caused blindness in ACDs. It is a good idea to check out the ACD rescue website as DMA has suggested. You never know what may come through their doors. As you are looking into desexing the dog, then there may be a dog there that will suit you. Is there any reason why you specifically wish to purchase an 8 week old pup?

Sorry Oceanaussi I may have confused you with talking about a standard length tray. The following is how all Hilux utes come from the factory with a tub back. Only the tailgate drops down at the back. The tray that we have on our Hilux (as shown below) you actually have to ask the dealer to add to the ute. It is 6ft in length, this is the standard length for a tray. Some people ask for them to be made slightly longer than this one. All the sides of the tray drop down and can be removed. Here is our new ute purchased just prior to christmas with the standard 6ft tray. This is the back view As you can see the tray comes standard with small sides that drop down and can be removed easily also. Hubby has made a temporary shelter for the dogs that has rubber matting on the floor and 3 points to tie the dogs onto. This is for short trips to keep them shaded and off the hot tray. We are in the process of having a dog box made that will cater for 2 dogs and have a toolbox on top. It will be both fully enclosed and lockable with internal mesh doors. The roof will be insulated and it will have a removable timber floor. There will be an air vent at the front and side of each of the boxes to allow air circulation. I will try and find a photo of our old box that will help explain it a lot better. I had my heart set on the Prado but when we went test driving we discovered that it was very small inside. Hubby is 6ft 4 and he could not fit in the front. There wasn't as much leg room and space. So that is how we ended up with the Kluger.

Sparky this may have been the case many years ago but registered ACD breeders have come a long way in regards to the temperament of the breed. This sort of temperament does nothing for the breed and is rarely seen today within the showing community. The best breed to work cattle that would be hard to pin point. Naturally the ACD’s purpose was to work cattle but these days you will find lines of Kelpies and Border Collies that have specifically been selected and bred for this purpose also. You could choose any of these breeds for the job as long as you have selected a dog from proven bloodlines. These animals would have been specifically chosen and bred for their natural working ability on cattle. Any breed of dog may bite someone that knocks on your front door; it all depends on their temperament.
