Veterinary Behaviourist Brisbane
gsdog2 replied to gsdog2's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Staff'n'Toller. Have you had any contact with him, and if so did he help? I did know about Cam Day, but he's the only one I can think of. I'm wondering if there's any other recommended Veterinary Behaviourists out there, or Behaviourists, or is Cam Day the only one??? -
I'm after a Veterinary Behaviourist in Brisbane to help with a problem I'm having with my Goldie. I would prefer if they had an interest in Obedience Trialing as my boy is all but ready, apart from one small problem which I'm wondering might be connected with his shadow/reflection obsession. I've edited "Topic Description" in the hope someone might be able to give me some more ideas. Nothing against Cam Day - just wondering if there's any other dog Behaviourists, if not Vet Behaviourists, out there? Surely he can't be the only one in Brisbane :D

We're not "weird" we just like to be different!!!

Thanks for your help 4 Paws (and everyone elso too). I've taken your advice and gone with the the Royale (free cover included). I've already received a number of emails from the seller and she seems really nice. I'm hoping it's as easy to put up as everyone says - it looks complicated on the web-site :D
-
As you've got so much time you might want to visit a few dog/puppy schools so that you can find one that's going to suit your needs. Good luck with the pup, it looks like you're doing all the right preparation.

Is there much difference between the two? From what I can see it only seems to be the covers over the vents/windows. Sorry for the questions but I don't want to buy one and wish I'd bought a different one later on Luke W: You're right it does look pretty cool. I like the idea, but I'm not sure how long it would last. It's certainly good for the price though. The K9 Royale is the sort of crate I had in mind.

Can I ask what was wrong with the sizing. I'm asking 'cause I'm trying to figure out what size to get for my Goldie (rather go too big that too small)
-
Thanks so much for these suggestions. I've marked both of these on ebay already, but there's nothing like a bit of first-hand experience. Do you find them easy to set up? And I suppose my only other question is air circulation - how are they in summer?
-
I know this topic has come up before, but when I do a "crate" search they're all "crate training" threads My Goldie sleeps in a crate every night, however it's a metal one and I find it's too heavy to take to trials. I've looked on ebay for the lighter cloth ones but there's just sooooooo many I'm after a lightweight, easy to set-up crate big enough to fit a Goldie. Can anyone suggest a crate and where to get one (I'm in south Brisbane area) or a web-site. Thanks in advance .

Tabitha Young has classes at Sumner Park and I think you'll find she uses clicker/whistle training. Wagtails Obedience Training Unit 1 18 Spine St SUMNER, QLD 4074 http://www.wagtails.com.au/flash.html She has a number of venues, this is just one of them. By the way, even though this is not a club there are a number of dogs in the class and therefore the socialisation is still there. Good on you for doing the research before you add to your fur family!

Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club
gsdog2 replied to Fit for a King's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You don't have to be a member of a club to trial. If you decide you dog's ready to trial you can enter CCD or a Sweepstakes if you want to start at Novice. -
I can relate to that!!! My Goldie took weeks to learn how to "shake hands" and yet my female GSD offered her paw the day we brought her home at 8 weeks.

I don't put a coat on my Goldie but I do on my shepherd. He's only 6 but he's already struggling with arthritis and gets very sore and stiff when he's cold. It all depends on the individual dog I guess.

Training In Other Languages
gsdog2 replied to mersonmalinois's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I don't think it is an issue. I've stewarded in a ring and noticed a competitor in the next ring gave his commands in German (not good German but German all the same ). As far as I know there weren't any objections - from either the judge or the other competitors. My parents are Dutch and I still use the occasional commands at home in Dutch. But, it never occurred to me to use Dutch commands that could then be used in the trial ring . What are the benefits ???? -
Just on the halti - I'm not sure I like the idea that you "must" use a halti. It works on some dogs, but others hate them. I've had dogs it did work on, another dog that nearly tied himself inside out trying to get rid of it, and another where it made no difference whether he had it on or not (he tends to lag at the best of times). The best way to find a good obedience club is word of mouth and if you give a few more details you should get a few good suggestions here.

I know what you mean carlibud. I lost my 12 year old girl a month ago yesterday and i just have to stumble accross a hair of hers and it sets me off. I still cant move her bed. Thats the last place she was laying before i had to take her on her last trip. It's supposed to get easier. I hope it does cause my heart breaks over and over again everyday. Hugs to you. :D Me too. The day we said goodby to our girl, my son was playing this beautiful song on the CD player in the car on the way to school. It's a beautiful song by Gotye and I love it, but it makes me cry when I hear it now as it takes me back to that day and I miss her all over again. Hang in there Carlibud

REMEMBER (In memory of beloved pets who are gone, but not forgotten.) I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying. You found it hard to sleep. I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear, “It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well, I’m fine, I’m here.” I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me. I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more. I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to re-assure you, that I’m not lying there. I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said “It’s me.” You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there. It’s possible for me to be so near you everyday. To say to you with certainty, “I never went away.” You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew… in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you. The day is over… I smile and watch you yawning and say “Good-night, God bless, I’ll see you in the morning.” And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand, side by side. I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out… then come home to be with me. - Author unknown

Oh carlibud, I'm so sorry for your loss. You had her for too short a time, and that's just not fair. You're right - too many sheppies are leaving us. My thoughts are with you and I share your tears

My beautiful girl has now left us. It's the hardest thing to do. I held her in my arms and I can't forget that moment when she left me, I'm crying now as I remember. Thank you all for your kind thoughts. It helps to know your there.

My beautiful girl only yesterday I am typing this with tears streaming as I realise in a few hours you will be gone. I'm going to miss you so much my beautiful girl. I know we've had a full life with you but it doesn't make the parting any easier. I love you so much, your gentle nature ...... you've never caused us any drama in your life. You've comforted me when you knew I was sad, you've shared our joys at our times of happiness ..... I can't believe tomorrow you won't be here. You've shared so much with us, I know you loved our camping trips, especially when you could spend time in the creeks and lakes at Straddy. Without you I wouldn't have entered a trial ring again. I've met people I wouldn't have met if it weren't for you. You restored my love of German Shepherds and for that I'll always hold a very special place in my heart for you. These last two days have been so hard as we all say our goodbyes, and you accompanied us down the back yard as we chose your final resting place, I didn't want you to follow, but you came anyway. You look like you could stay with us forever and I can't believe we have to say goodbye, and I'm glad you aren't aware of what's about to happen. I know your sensing it as we can't hide our tears. Goodbye darling We love you so much

I heard a classic the other day:- Don't give your dog a chew-toy because you are teaching him to chew your shoes/thongs and anything else within reach.

How clever is she It reminds me of Carolyn Scott & Rookie the Golden Retriever dancing to the Grease theme. There's not many that get to that standard.

Hey Benny's amazing . I haven't been able to attempt to teach my GSD's to beg because of hip problems, and I've only seen one GSD do a beg as good as his and he only had 3 legs

I haven't had this problem with any of mine *whew*, but I know vet Rob Zammit swears by the pineapple cure too!!!
