This is so sad. It's always heartbreaking when a person decides the dog they're about to give their wings to will be their last.

I clip my GSD's nails and trim the hair between her toes. I even clip my cat's nails but my Goldie ............ I actually have to send him to the vet for an anaesthetic to have his nails clipped. He goes hysterical if I try to clip his nails - and yes, I did clip them when he was a puppy. He lets me trim the hair between his toes but doesn't like the "clip" sound of the nail clippers.

Denise Fenzi - Seminar Announcement
gsdog2 replied to Jigsaw's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Ok so I've taken your advice and we're enrolled in Confidence Building for Obedience & Rally Ring. It's looks to be similar, the only difference seems to be this one is more for the dog that shuts down IN the ring but ok at the venue. We're doing the Bronze level (cheaper) so we're observing :) -
When you need those heights ask your club or if you don't belong to a club you can ask at one of the trials - they should be able to help you. And yes, even though it's hard to remember, have fun :)

Vet Recommendations For South West Brisbane?
gsdog2 replied to WeimMe's topic in General Dog Discussion
I know someone who uses this vet too and has nothing but praise for them - and yes I've seen their ad offering CCQ discount. I didn't know they were available 24/7 ........ not saying they don't just wondering? No they don't do the after hours, but if you need it, they will talk to the after hours vets for you. But they hold really long hours 7am - 7pm I think. And there has been times where I have rung them just after 7pm and the vet would talk to me well after that. They looked after my fur kids fantastically!! I prefer a 24/7 vet because I have lost a dog to bloat - the vet needs to be available any time of the day or night. You can't spend time trying to find a vet and unfortunately bloat often happens in the middle of the night. The reason I was interested is because Springfield Lakes are even closer than Booval :) -

I agree with this ^^^^ My dogs have no issues with separation anxiety but if I'm inside they're inside, if I'm outside that's where they want to be. However, if I go out for the day they're fine with that too. Congrats on giving this girl a good home - she's going to have a great life with her new family. Looks like you've found the right person to give you practical advice on the toileting issue with dogmad :)

Awwwwwwww ................. another vote for No. 4

This ^^^ is what I would be trying - crate training and treating her like a puppy

Booval Vet Hospital - available 24/7. Google maps say 26 minutes from Forest Lake. -
We go to sports ovals (when not being used  ), parks and basically anywhere you're allowed to have a dog - even the park NEXT TO the offlead park. She has a very good recall so I have no problem training her offlead. I also take her to the local obedience club, although we have never joined their group training, and that's where she gets to know other dogs under control - we go there to practice ringwork for trials. I took her everywhere when she was younger BUT never an offlead park and she doesn't seem to have suffered for missing out on the experience. I sometimes wonder if the dogs owners need those parks (for socialising) more than their dogs ETA have you tried an Obedience Club?
-
As already said the other dog was not under control so don't feel bad - her problem not yours :) Having said that there are often 'issues' when it comes to offlead areas ....................... and that's why I avoid them like the plague

I forgot how young she is - she's working so well she gives the impression she's much older. Enjoy the training - you both look like you're having a ball :)

Wow huski you and Wisdom make a great team - thanks for sharing Are you looking at competing soon - you both look like you're more than ready :)

The problem my dog has with kibble is that she takes sooooooo long to eat one piece that by the time she's finished she has no idea why it was given in the first place. The fact that she's not food-driven ensures she will never have too much of any treat, BUT when she does receive a treat it has to be soft (easy/quick to eat) and stong tasting. I suppose that's the disadvantage of having a dog that's not food driven. She's a relatively lean dog so it's not that she eats so much at mealtime that she has no interest in treats

I've tried making my own liver and chicken treats and yes, I know they're cheaper and probably healthier, but how many of us have gone to the fridge or freezer to pull out the training treats and there's none left! This is quick, easy and I've tasted them and they're defininately not too spicy - I don't like spicy food My dog isn't food driven so I normally use a ball for training but when I'm doing ringwork training it's not always appreciated by others if I use a ball as a reward. That's when I need to pull out an extra special food treat - and this type of treat 'might' be what I'm looking for. ETA it's JUST a suggestion, you don't have to try it :)

Treats as in training treats or just one or two a day for being good, type treats If being used for training treats, I would say, too much salt & too expensive compared to just getting some chicken & cutting it up. Bar-b-q chooks make up heaps of treats & would be a lot cheaper, if you want to use chook, but also contains a fair bit of salt, I imagine. The pack says "salt reduced" & "100% preservative free", so much better than a lot of other training treats. And yes, training treats, as that's the only time my dogs get treats. Also, my dogs don't get a massive amount of treats when training so a 125gm bag will last a week and at $4.00 not really an expensive treat :)

Found these at Woollies today and thought they'd make great treats

Funny you should say that about the positive effect of dogs. When they did research on the pet therapy dogs in hospitals, there was an unexpected finding that they had a positive influence on the staff. Same about puppies being raised for service work by prisoners.... there was not only positive effects on the prisoners involved, but also on the staff. I have an issue with high blood pressure and I'm sure having Indi sleeping calmly beside me helps keep it under control and stable - especially when we have a 'difficult' customer :)
-
This is very similar to our story - we've had our own business for the past 24 years and for the last 20 years we've always had a dog at work. They're at work from 8 weeks of age and get to know our staff, customers, delivery drivers and sales reps. It has a positive effect on everyone - great socialising for our dog and customers etc find there are some very sweet-natured German Shepherds around. For me, I find having a dog asleep beside me very calming - not sure I would still be in the same business without my dog coming to work with me every day :)

Surely if it's a significant attack someone ( police or local council) would be notified - Emergency dept. the most likely.

Oh FFS. *eye roll* I hope our Mayor's comment yesterday has nothing to do with this. Such a ridiculous question, my son owns a Great Dane (VERY large breed) and she is a very gentle girl. This has everything to do with how dogs are trained (or not trained) and nothing to do with the breed!
