  1. Mine loves cabanossi too and you can buy it from Woollies precut into nice little doggie-treat sizes Precut! That's what I need. Mine work so well for sausage type meat but I am so sick of slicing it up into tiny peices! Woollies in the fridge section with packaged bacon, ham etc. It comes in a twin pack and I'm convinced it's deliberately cut into doggy-treat size

  3. Another vote for ForDogTrainers leads. I have 4 of their leather leads - 2ft, 4ft, 6ft and small tag-type lead
  4. I think it's quite common that pups will have a higher drive for food. I have a Military Working Dog foster pup at the moment (so high drive) who will do anything for a piece of his kibble, however the drive for both the ball and tug are now increasing (he's 5mths old) to a much higher drive than for food. I like to use food with my ball-driven German Shepherd when I'm teaching her something new and then use the ball when I want her to pick up speed
  5. It's hard as he blames himself for not doing it and I felt it was my fault as I didn't let him know and I'm the one that usually fed Silas
  6. Three times!!! - you have my sympathy . I find it difficult enough worrying about my other two (GSD & GR) and whether it might happen to them, without having had one dog going through it again and again. It must be a real worry for you OSoSwift
  7. Yes, they do want them to experience a "normal" life while living with you . But, they also supply you with two balls which are purely for training (not to be left in the yard) and they ask you to play the "two ball game". It took him a little time to figure it out until I brought my ball-driven GSD into the mix and he soon figured out what was required - now he's as crazy for the ball as she is They also gave me two handtowels to play tug with him - allowing him to win and run away with the rag and then bring out the second rag and play the tug game again. I have my own tugs (linen, so suitable for puppy) and they have allowed me to use them instead. They also ask you to walk them twice each day totalling:- 3mths = 3kms daily 4mths = 4kms daily 5mths = 5kms daily 6mths = 6kms daily When walking them they ask you to expose them to as many different experiences as possible such as shopping ctrs, parks, sports, train stations etc ...... anything you can think of such as the ferry ride to the beach at Stradbroke Island as Boronia mentioned above. It sounds like a lot, but really once you get yourself into a routine it's not and it's definately a great way to get fit ;)
  8. Lovely to have met a fellow DOLer and show-off my foster - as you can see he's a VERY friendly boy
  9. Ok, I didn't know that. It makes me feel a little better (if true) as the only thing I could think of that we did wrong that night was that my OH fed him (usually I do) and I forgot to tell him to elevate his bowl - something I ALWAYS did. We have both been feeling very guilty about this as it was a "one-off" and we lost him Great news Kirislin, I'm glad he's ok (assuming no news is good news)
  10. Im so so sorry gsdog2 How painful it is to lose them My i ask a general question abt bloat? Are they more likely to bloat if they eat a meal straight after excerise or if they are overheated? I have been told this but was wondering if other circumstances can also cause this or if it can sometimes just happen? Our first gsd bloated when i was a young child and dad told me he just got her there in time, vet said if he had been another 5 mins.... Yes!!!! You shouldn't feed your dog 2hrs before and after exercise. If possible elevate their food bowl and if feeding dry food do not allow them to drink large amounts of water immediately after eating. Thank you Yes his food bowl is elevated and i always wait till he is properly cooled off before his has his dinner. Even if he does crack a case of the poopies cause he has to wait lol

  12. Have posted on FB and yes, I agree - I don't think it's referring to cropping
  13. I lost my beautiful nine year old shepherd earlier this year to gastric torsion - can I just give people a heads-up on the symptoms I noticed. The first sign was that he was not comfortable lying down, he was pacing a lot, he had what they call unproductive gagging (trying to vomit without producing anything) pale gums and the most obvious was the bloated abdomen . If you have any clue that your dog may have this condition you need to get your dog to the vet ASAP!!! I knew my dog had it, and literally raced him to the vet and yet within 3 hours of noticing the first signs he was given his wings during surgery I will keep my fingers and toes crossed for this little guy as it is the most heart breaking thing I have ever gone through with my dogs.
  14. Well, I think that falls under the heading of "improper use". If I can get a dog that hates his head being restrained to come running for his eye drops every 3 hours, I think most dogs can be taught to like a head collar. That's not really a valid comparison. Having your muzzle held for a minute or less to apply eye drops is different to a dog having to wear a head collar for a prolonged period of time. I can go on but this is OT... I agree - I have a Goldie that literally shuts down whenever I put a headcollar on him. I took him to a trainer I have a lot of respect for and when she suggested the headcollar I decided to try it. After me trying everything she suggested we both agreed he was NEVER going to move while wearing a headcollar. I also have a German Shepherd that would run a mile before allowing me to put drops in her very painful ears. With a lot of effort on my part I am now able to put those drops in her ears and give them a quick massage - this took a lot of work but certainly no comparison to my poor Goldie and his dislike of the headcollar. Just putting the headcollar on my Goldie (who loves food and knows exactly what a click means) meant that he just droppped to the ground and wouldn't move - no matter what I tried
  15. Exercising the kiddies?????????? Not very reliable - - high possibility of loss of said kiddies If you can guarantee the loss of the kids, I'll take 2. I'll take a third if you have a model that puts weight on! Yes, I have the perfect model for you - slightly larger than previous model, but can guarantee weight gain NB Tattoo's not included
  16. Wasn't there a thread on this just recently? I've searched Training/Obedience and can't find it (doesn't mean it's not here ) or maybe it's in General.

  18. Can I recommend this version (Military Working Dog puppy)- guaranteed to remove ALL FLAB!!!. I have one as a foster ;) Recommended fitness regime is:- 3mth puppy = 3 km daily 4mth puppy = 4 km daily 5mth puppy = 5 km daily 6mth puppy = 6 km daily This particular model is free (YES FREEEEE ) - but must be returned upon reaching 7mths of age
  19. I agree - I thought if you adopt a dog from the RSPCA they do a check first to see if it will get on with the other dogs in the household it's going to
  20. well said Huski! Isn't creating the right reward experience what training is all about? No matter what the breed (or their nerves) there is a reward they will switch on for - it's a matter of FINDING the right reward and then building on it isn't it?
  21. I think it's more of a rescues from pounds thing, but they might be able to point her in the right direction. Having said that is I was the breeder I would want to know, I'd be offering them support or if not taking the puppy back. When we bought our Goldie we signed an agreement saying if at any stage we decided we didn't want to keep him he was to go back to the breeder.
  22. Your post reminded me of an email sent to me :- FREE TO A GOOD HOME: 2 young children Genuine reason, I've got a new puppy so no longer have the time for the child. worried that the child may bite puppy. Child is currently kept in a crate. Needs home by tomorrow or will be put to sleep.. YOU WOULDN'T DO THIS TO A CHILD SO WHY DO YOU SEE IT AS ACCEPTABLE TO DO IT TO A DOG OR CAT? If you can't dedicate a lifetime to a dog/cat, don't get one. This could be as much as 20yrs! My 20yr old son was worried when I posted this on facebook - he thought I was talking about him On a serious note I hope your friend contacts the breeder
  23. I love all the different ways people 'spell' these procedures
  24. Bec means she put Daisy to bed and then Bec consumes multiple bottles of wine and then everything is simple after that ;) It works like magic every time!! Wine is absolutely crucial after a bad training session
