Greyhound Racing To Be Shut Down
Loving my Oldies replied to Flashsmum's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh no! So let’s not do anything. Anyone with half a brain will know that hundreds (if not thousands) of people involved in this cruel abominable activity (I will NOT call it sport) will be racing out with their guns ablazing. It is such a sickening thought and it is to be hoped that some will be able to pull themselves up and try to do the decent thing by their dogs. However, it is no reason not to act. Immediate ramifications are what stops many necessary actions all across society. Time for people to have a few more guts and follow this example. -
Having battled for years with wanting to block off parts of the house at various times and for various reasons (cleaning, weather, sickness, etc) and being a multiple dog owner, my feelings would be to have two doggy doors: the laundry one for when she is a baby and the one to the deck for when she is older and you can supervise. Having the door in the laundry will be good for nighttime when you (perhaps) don't want her wandering around the house or wanting to keep her in a confined area forma short time for whatever reasons. Go over each of the outside areas with a fine tooth comb to ensure there are no danger points for potential injury/harm/escape. Exciting

My Little Cheetah (Aka Jeune)
Loving my Oldies replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in Palliative Care Forum
She is definitely better from her treatment yesterday, but she isn't a Cheerful Cheetah . She has been kicking her lips a bit, so I think she is experiencing little "almost being sick" incidences. I've had confirmation of the time for today's procedure (take her in between 12 and 1), so the cold and wet is a good excuse to just snuggle until then. Thank you for your concerns lovely DOLers. This is such a shock. Even the vet said yesterday, that they carried out a few checks just to ensure she was okay for a dental only to discover this Hopefully we will get some indication today as to how to treat her symptoms. ETA: OMG nearly made a big mistake Checked the calendar again and her time is between 11 and 12. The morning has disappeared. -

Thanks JayGee. It is all so sudden and shocking. -

Just back from the vet with Jeune. She has been throwing up all day, not interested in food, walked happily though, but obviously not happy or well and has been following me everywhere, which is totally out of character. We’ve taken bloods, given her pain relief, subcutaneous fluids and have brought forward her needle biopsy for tomorrow. Can’t believe how quickly symptoms are developing  Nothing to do tomorrow except cuddles on couch before and after trip to vet. -
Rescued Dogs Caged For Years
Loving my Oldies replied to Tootsie Roll's topic in General Dog Discussion
Without a doubt all of the above can apply, but that does not alter the fact that Jules and god knows how many other dogs are being left to languish for years with little or no concern for their happiness. Your first two dot points are a huge assumption and are no argument at all for denying what you call “the bit of truth”. There is more than a bit of truth to this whole sorry affair and the thread needs a bit more than 5 minutes of skimming before denouncing it as a standard social media rescue brawl. :( Truth and clarity? Hardly. Generalisation and pushing one’s own barrow. -
I actually did call the first one, which was Maltese Club of Victoria, Inc. I am 30 years old but I have a "Minnie Mouse" voice and I admit I can sound like an adolescent on the phone, even when I try not to or to speak as professionally as I can. The woman who answered was polite but responded as if she were talking to a 13-year-old. I can't blame her. But, I am a little intimidated after this experience to call others, for fear they will not take me seriously! Oh, poor you. I had a similar experience many years ago with a rescue dog. A young woman rang to say that, “Me and mum want to come up and adopt him.” I thought I was talking to a young girl around 13 too. I can’t remember how I got around it, but it turned out she was 25, highly experienced in rescuing all sorts of wild life, she and mum did come up the next day and gave that little dog the best home a doggy could want for. So KEEP TRYING.

that's the one I was going to use but she chewed the corners off it. Now I just leave it there for her to play on. She likes to sit on it and bark. That is funny. Obviously channeling a corner speaker. -

LOL I see you have another box to raise the feeding bowl  -
I will never ever understand the numbers of people who say this. My first dogs were two Maltese (purebred LOL) from different breeders. The boy was 9 weeks and the girl was 8 weeks when I brought them home. They were perfect together, I took them training together, we went everywhere we were allowed together. Yes, they were hugely attached ..... to me and then to each other. That is, of course, only my experience, but the vast majority of people I see walking dogs have more than one dog. In fact, I am almost always surprised when I see a solo dog. There is no way in the world that I would have a dog on his or her own when I worked. Maltese are lovely little dogs. No matter how cute and gorgeous the little dog, always remember that they are dogs and need interests, socialisation, walks, training, bones etc etc etc. They are not little people in white fur onesies

I spent most of it queuing to vote  Which is a bit of an exaggeration but buy the time I’d done that, had lunch, some necessary shopping, home for afternoon meds and walkies, sunshine is well and truly gone. Will have to start earlier tomorrow ---- 9.30am means two hours of sunshine already gone :o -

Danny Boy is somewhat off colour today, having brought up all his meds :( I changed the quilt he was lying on, put down a new one and went into the kitchen for something; came out and he’d thrown up again on the new one. Not a lot, but it is such a continuous worry. However, it is a beautiful day and (despite having to vote) we are going to make the most of it. -

I am not confident, actually, T, as she is starting to throw up fairly regularly. Not a lot, just bits and pieces here and there. But, of course, we always hope for a good outcome. -
Rescued Dogs Caged For Years
Loving my Oldies replied to Tootsie Roll's topic in General Dog Discussion
And good for you, Tootsie Roll . The “rescue business” as with any business needs new faces and new blood to keep on trying to advance the causes of dogs (and other animals) who are treated so badly. As I said before, there are always those inside and outside of rescue who think they know it all. Keep trying to help Jules and others in the same position. -

Rescued Dogs Caged For Years

I am aware of this. There was a time that having a Clause 16D was the be all and end all. It was simply a money saver and some rescue orgs thought nothing of allowing others to use theirs. I just recounted this story to show the attitudes that proliferate in rescue, to the detriment of the animals, even in those groups highly regarded  -

Well I have no doubt now about having another needle biopsy. I had made up my mind, but this has convinced me to not back away from having it done. -

But pounds are where 99% of the dogs come from ?? However, I do agree 100% with your first para. So I guess the answer is that pound staff have to be more discerning. I was told once by a poster in this thread that a now deceased and highly regarded rescuer who would let anyone and everyone use her Clause 16D, said that she would let Jack the Ripper have a dog so long as it got the dog out of the pound. This conversation has been going on for years and probably will continue to do so while people who want to save the lives of dogs in pounds have no idea and don’t really care what they are going to do after the dog is out of the pound. -

LOL - she is timid in the extreme, jumps if a twig snaps when we are walking and, as for food ------ are you sure it isn’t poisoned? ETA: I think I put this photo in the wrong thread -

Sadly, I don’t think that is the case. Vet said she is 100% certain :( However, there is always a possibility . . . . . . . -

I’ve not been out to this facility for many years, but it has always been this way. They also allowed other “rescuers” to kennel dogs and then the dogs are just left there with no attention from the original rescuer and little or no advertising for homes. I don’t know if this still happens. -

Yes, T. When I moved here in January 2005, I had five little dogs (and my beautiful Gussy Cat): Danny, Jeune, Tamar, Gong Zhu and Tirra. In those years up until now, many many dogs have come and gone (rescues, fosters, overnighters, boarders) and they have all moved on to new homes, or gone to god, but through it all Danny, Jeune and Tamar have been with me. Bunter has been a Moocher for 5 years (hard to believe - still seems like yesterday) and he is about 15 with heart problems . So it is all getting a bit overwhelming, really. Already, I am feeling sick to think of how Tamar will be when Danny and Jeune go. Anyway, mustn’t wallow, walkies call :D In younger, glossier days (and pre new curtains and painting): -

First needle biopsy didn’t show anything except that the mass was very very hard. After discussions with my vet and discussions she had with the specialist, I am going to let Jeune settle down a bit from the procedure and then have another one done with a larger needle in the hope that we can be more definitive about what sort of cancer. That way, we should be able to administer more targeted medications to hopefully help her feel better when the cancer starts to impact :( . It won’t be easy because Jeune has always been a strange little one. I’ve spoken many times over the years about Tamar’s and Jeune’s performances around food - they obviously come from royalty where, in the past, they employed food tasters to ensure their food hadn’t been poisoned !! Many years ago, my first little male Maltese died of cancer and from the time we discovered it (very advanced) and until the day he had to be helped over the Bridge was six weeks  I still remember that day. However, I am sure we have discovered Jeune’s lump much earlier and Nammu died over 14 years ago. Huge advances in that time. Main thing is to just keep her happy, be happy with her and day by day. One of my all time favourite pix (taken by tdierikx several years ago) - Jeune is at the back giving that great big yawn. -
