  1. As the title says, I am looking for recommendations for an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sydney. Some of you will have followed my story about Sooty https://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/271361-a-new-girl-at-myrtle-street-sooty/ When she first came to me, she would hold up and tuck in her right front leg. I was able to straighten it at first and it would stay down for a little while and then she would just tuck it up again. After a while, she started to give little yips and cries when I did this, so obviously a vet visit was called for. Sooty belongs to a rescue group, so I just can’t up and take her to the vet easily in that I have to get permission, etc etc. Eventually, Sooty was diagnosed with a Sub-luxated elbow and only surgery can fix it. Her leg is never down now and, of course, I don’t try to straighten it at all because of the pain it causes. The rescue groups wants to get a couple more opinions so I thought I’d put it out here to see if someone has had a million gold stars experience with an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
  2. Brilliant reaction to what has happened. As I am not experienced with large breeds, I didn’t comment but did have thoughts LOL. And my first thoughts were that your pup was just being taught some manners. May you and your pup have many very happy years together.
  3. @PANDI-GIRLthe last photograph we had of Simba showed him racing along the beach with his new Bro
  4. Thanks @Sagittarian. Both the dogs on whom I was trying it are overweight. As I said in a previous post, the weight loss was going well until I started using RHV and had to feed them too much because they did not like the taste. I am now trying 4cyte and that is comprised of just tiny little balls which the dogs will eat. Sadly, I saw absolutely no improvement over the nearly four months I had the dogs on the RHV.
  5. Beautiful. And is anyone here old enough to remember Sister Wendy, the nun who used to do tours of art galleries for tv explaining with wild excitement the background, history, artistry of paintings? When I saw this beautiful dog, I immediately thought of her and how she might talk about this lovely creature and the history around him.
  6. Sad news and happy news. Bit of a roller coaster, but through it all the dogs are given nothing but love and attention to their physical and emotional needs. Well done. Rest easy Bella.
  7. I have given up on Rose Hip Vital. The dogs don’t like it and I had to hide it in so much food, Mezza gained nearly 300grams . I am now trying 4Cyte which the dogs will eat on its own and they are given only six little “bullets” of it a day. So if anyone wants to buy one unopened 500g powder and one opened, but hardly used, make me an offer . I paid $100 total for them both.
  8. The last food or anything I would feed or try would be something endorsed or promoted by a “celebrity”. I’ve seen enough snippets in the written media debunking just about everything Pete Evans talks about in terms of nutrition. I never knew who he was until I started watching some programs on 7 and was constantly bombarded with advertisements for the kitchen program ...... yet again people behaving in ways that if they did it in public they’d be locked up for being a public menace.
  9. All you need now are a couple of chooks and a kitty.
  10. What a stunner, @sheena. Love the perfectly symmetrical markings on his head.
  11. How did I miss this ? Absolutely beautiful. Beach + Dogs = pure happiness.
  12. Love and commitment in action. If it works . . . . . Reminds me of a story I saw about dementia patients being given dolls. It relaxes them and makes them content, cuddling and singing to the dolls. I follow a wonderful organisation in Victoria called Edgar’s Mission (farm rescue) and they have huge teddies and other stuffed toys/animals in the pens and you’ll see pix of all the little animals clustered around snuggling up to these.
  13. What a wonderful update, Rascal. You’ve done so well in acknowledging and respecting and acting upon Hugo’s needs for a happy life. There can be no greater love or commitment. I received an update regarding my latest rehoming (also a little orange poodle, but of course he wasn’t mine so a totally different emotional journey). It was a video of Simba racing on a beach with his big poodleX bro. Made my heart sing as yours must be doing knowing how well Hugo’s journey has turned out.
  14. What wonderful news. Congratulations on your total commitment to Agatha and to all those people with eyes out for her. Just brilliant.
  15. Mezza had his weigh in and check up yesterday. His weight is 5.6kg so I haven’t taken him back to square one. Vet says he simply must lose weight because none of the meds he has been on have seemed to helped, but then we don’t know if he’d have been worse without them. So in order to weigh food absolutely correctly, he is to have only Satiety and luckily, despite having zero teeth , he wolfs it down. I have been grinding it and mixing in with ordinary food, but that makes it hard to calculate calories. Since visit to vet there have been two meals and I have just given him the whole kibble. Vet wants to see him in a month and wants to see a weight loss in that time of at least 250grams. . I wish there was a kibble that I trusted to be a complete and healthy diet for dogs as it is so easy to just put some kibble in a bowl. I have also decided that Rose Hip Vital is a waste of money and now trying 4cyte which comes in little pellets, easily measured and the dose is tiny .. about six of the pellets. I tried both Bunter and Mezza on just the pellets last night and they hoovered them down and asked for more, which they didn’t get , because I am reading labels and sticking to them. The Rose Hip is unpalatable and needed more wet food to mix it through which, of course, added to the calorie intake . Hopefully 4cyte will be a help them both.
  16. @PANDI-GIRL, I haven’t had an update about Simba this week, but previous reports were totally positive. Rescuer is very busy planning her wedding in less than 4 weeks’ time and still trying to cope with the never ending stream of dogs needing help . Sooty does look healthy and not only is the hair growing back on her ears, but also her whole coat is thickening. When she first came here, it was so thin you could see her skin through it and I was terrified of tearing it - brushing was a very careful and tentative activity and now I can brush (still gently) without fear.
  17. Photo showing hair growth on Sooty’s ears. No pix of ears from her first days here, but they were bald (vet wondered if hair would grow back) and covered in scratches and scabs where the “carer” had allowed her dogs to pull Sooty around . Whenever I think of how she must have suffered (remember she is blind) I feel sick with sorrow and anger. She’ll soon be able to have proper Poodle ears - LOL . The groomer has managed to start giving her a little tufty head. IMG_1028 by Cynthia Waters, on Flickr
  18. Sooty continues to wow and impress. Today she weighed in at 3.78kgs so approx 400gm to go. She regularly just needs two meals a day as she is not interested in her midday meal. I had her groomed the other day and she looks gorgeous. I have photos but haven’t been able to get them onto Flickr to put up here . There must be an easier way ??
  19. I’ve read back over this whole topic to refresh myself as to the very helpful and appreciated suggestions and to see what I was doing in the first place. I have to get back into a regime of weight loss for Mezza. I’ll be taking him to the vet for a check up as we have completed a couple of courses of ABs so will weigh him and stock up on Satiety - which he and Bunter still get at every meal.
