  1. The whole situation is just so tragic and to apportion blame on fences seems a bit OTT to me, but as I have small dogs, I would never have them in the front yard without supervision. If I had a large dog, maybe I'd think differently, but the dog would have to be totally non-reactive to people or other dogs passing by as I would never allow a dog to,rush at fences and frighten walkers by. ETA: if I had a dog who was allowed into the front yard, the gate would have a lock on it during the times the dog was there ... for the dog's safety.
  2. No treats for Zuzee tonight for giving every one such a scare . :) :)
  3. What a terrifying experience, Alyosha. I hope you are feeling a little less shaken this morning, but these sorts of events can take a bit of getting over. I am with the others who say the attack should be reported, but feel the people need to be advised that this is going to happen - a highly uncomfortable situation for you to be in Agree, Diva. Poor dogs are not immune from the stresses that some families inflict on themselves.
  4. Horrible and frightening for everyone involved - even the witnesses. Hugs to you. I hope everyone is alright. So sad.
  5. I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I've said it before: I think there are too many subforums on DOL. So many informative and intelligent threads get missed.
  6. I hope you have had a second opinion. Luxating patellas are the most over operated on "condition". A vet can just snap the knee caps out and in on small and young dogs and the owner is told: OH luxating patellas, the dog will be crippled, he needs an operation !!! Please don't operate unless it is absolutely needed ETA: Then of course if the operate IS needed, go to a specialist. I would recommend SASH at North Ryde or ARH at Homebush.
  7. I have a set of stairs similar to those, but the width of the stairs compared with angle (steepness) stops the dogs from going down them and so they are still jumping down from the bed which is far from ideal at their advanced ages I wonder if you would be kind enough to measure the width of the stairs please, kiwigirl?
  8. I've never heard of them, but wish every road and traveller had them. Our road kill tally is horrendous
  9. Biker girl, google Amanda de Warren. She is based in Queensland but does quite a bit of interstate travel. I had a phone "consultation" a couple of years ago and found her very intuitive and empathetic. Whatever it is, I hope you find answers and solutions.
  10. I have read your second and third posts. Sorry DC, a post like this is just so out of line and so lacking in compassion that it makes me feel quite ill.
  11. Little dogs with big hearts , Jet will be sorely missed.
  12. Stunning Jules ....... both gals . She has lovely long legs.
  13. Oh that must have been so hard, Kanati. I hope the tears stop soon, though, and that you smile through them until then. Those babies will always hold a special place I your heart. Congratulations to you and your Whippy Mum for a "labour of love".
  14. Totally agree - I don't understand these "how to talk to breeders" threads at all. Communication between people is a two way street - and people differ on how good they are at it :) I think it is more to do with the fact that a prospective buyer is buying a living creature, not a piece of furniture and if it is the first time someone has bought a puppy, I think it is fairly reasonable that people should be asking how to do it. That said, if someone asked me to knock off $200 from the purchase price because they had house payments coming up, red flags by the dozen would be popping up. And even more so if they wanted a reduction because of the number of vax a puppy/dog had had.
  15. Oh Indigirl, Bowie is a knockout. Gorgeous little dog with such a look in his eyes . Can see why he is staying put.
  16. I have only once bought from a breeder and I just went out to view the pup when she was 4 weeks old, bought her on the spot and waited another 4 weeks to bring her home - so none of the questions that seem to worry people so much even occurred to me LOL. However, I think it arises here (and let's face it thousands more people are buying dogs than those who appear and ask questions on DOL  ) because people have a platform to talk about what they are experiencing and also because they may have had difficulty finding and buying the breed of their choice and what advice, wondering where they may have "gone wrong" and "what are breeders looking for". But you are absolutely right: breeders are just people and there will be good and bad, smart and silly, caring and non-caring in the group as in the usual community.
  17. I understand that there are people who want to know down to the last cent what they are spending and why. This can be a good thing, but it can also be taken to the extreme when the price comes before value and the desire to "get the better of the seller" overtakes natural commercial dealings. Not everyone is out to diddle you, Ziggy, and it might be an idea to examine why you feel it is necessary to take research to the, what does seem, extreme. :) I think by now, if he has read carefully every post, the OP would have the message. :)
  18. Stan! What big teefies you have, quite scared me. Hope your mum has lots of to celebrate. You look pretty damned gorgeous, Maddie
  19. Thank goodness. Turns my stomach to think of poor lost dogs, let alone what their people are going through.
  20. This is extract from the FB page, LG. Totally different from your scenario. "Hi, Mandy Clancy has asked that I pass on this summary of what the psychic said and to thank the member who arranged and paid for this reading but wishes to be anonomyous. Summarised as follow..... Cyan is still alone, has sheltered in natural shelters and travelled away from the road. There is a strong indication of a northerly aspect and she saw a train and has been circling about 100 -150 meters from the track. She has eaten some grubs and mushy dirt and is wandering in a smallish area but has chosen various different spots to stop at for a day or so. There is lots of bush and places to hide, puddles, bush, open space and feathers. Cyan is hoping people will send more thoughts her way. Especially look for her at dusk and dawn. "
  21. Oh no. A little lost pup . Hope he gets home soon.
  22. So sad. An anonymous supporter paid for the services of a psychic. Hope it helps to bring the poor little dog home, safe and well.
  23. More than that. He could (should?) be prosecuted for blatantly neglecting a dog's basic needs. Poor little dog must have been in agony. I'm thinking about doing that. I'll give the RSPCA a call but not sure they can do much on hearsay and vets have confidentiality so not sure they could do anything unless they had to or wanted to. I think it would be worth a call to the RSPCA. They probably can't do anything after the event, but they could send him a letter perhaps setting out basic needs and guidelines. You'd think he wouldn't need to know, but obviously he does. "No Dogs Allowed" should be stamped on his forehead. We all make mistakes, but 2 weeks. Makes me feel sick and wish I hadn't read.
  24. RRs are such gorgeous creatures. There are a couple in my neighbourhood. There is a sub forum here where you can discuss your chooks (and subscribe to Earth Garden magazine LOL), but as it is a sub-forum of Off Topic, you need to have 150 posts before you can see it. Going on the questions people want to ask you, you will be there in no time, but the downside is you won't have time to work
